This research develops a solution method for project scheduling represented by a max-plus-linear (MPL) form. Max-plus-linear representation is an approach to model and analyze a class of discrete-event systems, in which the behavior of a target system is represented by linear equations in max-plus algebra. Several types of MPL equations can be reduced to a constraint satisfaction problem (CSP) for mixed integer programming. The resulting formulation is flexible and easy-to-use for project scheduling;for example, we can obtain the earliest output times, latest task-starting times, and latest input times using an MPL form. We also develop a key method for identifying critical tasks under the framework of CSP. The developed methods are validated through a numerical example.

The deregulation of electric power industries is introducing around the world and electric power markets are operated under the deregulation. Also in Japan, JEPX (Japan Electric Power Exchange) operates a day-ahead market since April 2005. We have already analyzed the electric power market prices in the several markets including JEPX by autoregressive models. We compose simple regression equations, of which a dependent variable is the market price and explanatory variables are the demand and the market price of 24 hours ago. In this paper, we analyze JEPX price data in summer seasons from 2007 to 2013. In this period, the JEPX price is affected by many social phenomena such as Lehman Shock and East Japan earthquake disasters. We compare the determination coefficient and the coefficients of regression and investigate the change of coefficients over the years.

A significant structural change in the pattern of economic development in Asian economies has been observed in recent years. We have seen many cases in which the Asian economies became the center of the world-wide production in an extremely short period of time after a new product entered the market. Also in the science, the number of papers written by Asian researchers has been increasing dramatically. In this situation, the existing studies cannot sufficiently explain the driving force and the mechanism of catch-up or economic growth. Therefore, it is now required to model this new type of economic development. In this paper we analyzed their scientific catch-up status using scientific papers on solar cells to clarify the structural change. After mid 1990s, knowledge creation has been accelerated in the field of solar cell. Now more than three thousand papers are published annually. We found as a result that the catch-up process in Asian economies had progressed rapidly, that some economies had a larger share of scientific papers in the frontier field of advanced science than in the matured fields, and that the strategy largely changed from area to area. A “parallel-running-type growth model” has thus been emerging in Asia. Responding to the significant changes in development model, we have to re-design the framework of economic cooperation. There is a need for further horizontal collaboration among major Asian economies and developed economies. We also showed that bibliometrics is an effective method for presuming a detailed national strategy that is not known to the outside.

Endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration biopsy (EUS-FNA) is a useful procedure that enables reliable pathological diagnoses of pancreatobiliary diseases, subepithelial lesions, and swollen lymph nodes. In recent years, a pathological diagnosis based on EUS-FNA has made it possible to provide accurate treatment methods not only in these fields, but also in respiratory organs and otorhinolaryngology. This review discusses the latest topics pertaining to EUS-FNA as well as procedural tips.

This paper presents seasonal regression models of demand to investigate electricity consumption characteristics. Electricity consumption in commercial areas in Japan is analyzed by using meteorological variables, namely temperature and relative humidity. A dummy variable for holidays is also considered. We have developed models for two levels of period to analyze demand characteristics, that is, half year models and seasonal models. Some options for each model are calculated and validated by statistical tests to obtain better models. As results, half year and seasonal models present explicit information about how the variables affect the demand differently for each period. These specific information help in analyzing characteristics of studied commercial demand.

We investigated the effect of silver-loaded zeolite (Ag-Z) on antibacterial activity of some antibiotics against Es-cherichia coli against antibiotics. We treated the bacterial suspension of E. coli by Ag-Z to be the level which the decrease of viable cell count was not observed. Susceptibility test of E. coli treated with Ag-Z was carried out against four antibiotics with different mode of action. Apparent increase in susceptibility was found in the case of rifampicin, not in others. The result suggests that application of Ag-Z to ward environment might give a good outcome at the treatment with rifampicin and at the treatment for pathogenic microbe spread through the air, such as tubercle bacilli.

The operation of distribution system with the components in deteriorating condition makes the system reliability worsen. It is important to find the solution for balancing failure cost and maintenance benefits such as down-time and reliability. In this paper, time to replace the components in optimum condition based on constant-interval replacement mode is investigated. The optimal replacement time is mainly depended on component’s reliability and the cost ration of preventive replacement and failure replacement. In this paper, equipment inspection method and Weibull Analysis is applied to obtain the accurate reliability estimation. Weibull Analysis is applied with constant-interval replacement model to investigate the optimum replacement time for each component considering the different cost ratios. According to the quantitative results, the determination of the optimal replacement time (OPT) can minimize the total downtime and failure cost. Consequently, the reliability of the system is maximized and estimation also becomes more accurate due to sufficient approach.

Objectives: Our aim was to clarify the study characteristics of countries that have registered clinical trials studies and to calculate the percentage of clinical trials that were registered in each country’s registry, and try to find and evaluate the factors determining that percentage. Design and Methods: The present study is a cross-sectional study using data from clinical trials registered from January 1, 2011, to December 31, 2015. Only countries with more than 2000 registered trials were included for further study. Ten countries met that criterion: United States, Japan, Iran, Australia, New Zealand, China, India, Germany, United Kingdom, and Netherland. The percentage of clinical trials that were registered in each country’s registry was calculated, and the factors determining that percentage were sought and analyzed through an exploratory approach. Results: The chi-squared test of independence indicated that the rate of clinical trial registration significantly differed between countries. From the adjusted standardized residuals, the percentage of clinical trials that were registered in the country of origin was higher in the United States, India, Japan, and Australia/New Zealand than in the European Union and China. Conclusion: The United States requires that informed consent documents for clinical trials contain clinical trial registration numbers from ***, which could be the reason for the extremely high percentage of registered clinical trials (94%). Since the European Union does not have this requirement, clinical trials conducted in the European Union do not have to be registered in the countries in which they are conducted.
