Assessment of the Energy Conversion on the Thermal Balance and Atmospheric Emissions in Ceramic Tile Product Industry in Tunisia: A Case Study

This work aims to assess the effect of energy conversion (Thermal oil, Natural gas and cogeneration system) on atmospheric emission and energy consumption in ceramic tile product sector in Tunisia. Two tile manufactures were selected. The first plant has two production lines: The first line (FF1) operates with thermal oil with a lower calorific value (LHV) of 9811 cal/g and the second line (FG1) operating with natural gas has a lower calorific value (HHV) of 10,520 cal/g, ensuring a daily output of 300 tons each one. The second manufacture (SC2) operates with natural gas with the same LHV value. The thermal oil energy balance showed a specific consumption of 0.0481 toe/ton tile product for the FF1 manufacture line, 0.0198 toe/ton of tile product for the FG1 manufacture line and 0.0143 toe/ton of tile product for the SC2 manufactory. The electrical energy consumption was 0.0121 toe/ton of tile product for the FF1 line, 0.0108 toe/ton of tile product for the FG1 line and a production of energy (exergy) of 0.014 toe/ton for the SC2 production line. The specific consumption was split into 40% for dryer and 60% for tunnel kilns. The conversion allow to record a dryer reduction rate of 80% for nitrogen oxides (NOx), 56% for sulfur oxides (SOx), 56% for fluorinated compounds, 52% for chlorinated compounds and 52% for volatile organic compound. Whereas, the kiln reduction rate was 36% for nitrogen oxides, 51% for sulfur oxides, 36% for chlorinated compounds and 55% for fluorinated and 50% for volatile organic compounds (VCOs). Compared to natural gas line, the use of cogeneration system in kiln process shows a decrease of 67% for NOx emissions, 80% for SOx emissions, 89% for fluorinated compounds, 58% for chlorinated emissions and 64% for volatiles organic compounds. Compared to thermal oil, the use of cogeneration system reduces the thermal energy consumption by 70% and allowed to save 30% of electric energy by generate 20% of needed electric energy. Background: The aim of this study was to establish normal reference values for several growth factors in semen and provide a basis for understanding their physiological significance in fertile and infertile subjects. Methods: 110 infertile men semen was evaluated according to WHO standards and by enzyme immunoassay (ELISA kit protocol) to determine the rate of growth factors (TGFβ1, IGFI, EGF). We have also listed neutrophils by staining with peroxidase to examine the association of inflammation with the levels of these factors. The determination of the epididymal (alpha-1,4-glucosidase) marker was directed according to the technical recommended by the WHO in 2010. Each patient received a hormonal balance including the determination of plasma FSH, LH and Testosterone. Results: Concentrations of TGFβ1 were significantly higher in (severe and extreme azoospermic, oligospermic) pathological groups compared to the control group (P 0.05) between control and pathological groups. The IGFI is partly testicular and/or epididymal as it is lowered in some patients with obstructive azoospermia. Positive correlations were observed between the seminal IGFI, mobility (r = 0.487) and sperm morphology (r = +0.187). Immunological sperm abnormalities and/or idiopathic do not alter the rate of EGF seminal. There is no significant correlation between seminal EGF or with sperm parameters or with plasma levels of FSH and LH. Conclusion: The growth factors are primarily peptides, handling and identification in a complex environment as the seminal plasma, but it requires a lot of precautions if we do not want to expose to the risk of bad farms/interpretations of data obtained.

In recent years, there has been a growing interest in researching and developing new antimicrobial agents from various sources to combat microbial resistance. Therefore, a greater attention has been paid to antimicrobial activity screening and evaluating methods. Several bioassays such as disk-diffusion, well diffusion and broth or agar dilution are well known and commonly used, but others such as flow cy- tofluorometric and bioluminescent methods are not widely used because they require specified equip- ment and further evaluation for reproducibility and standardization, even if they can provide rapid re- sults of the antimicrobial agent＇s effects and a better understanding of their impact on the viability and cell damage inflicted to the tested microorganism. In this review article, an exhaustive list of in vitro antimicrobial susceptibility testing methods and detailed information on their advantages and limita- tions are reported.

Wegener’s Granulomatosis Presenting with Bilateral Excavated Nodules

Wegener’s granulomatosis (WG) is a systemic inflammatory disease whose histopathologic features often include necrosis, granuloma formation, and vasculitis of small-to-medium-sized vessels. We report a new case of Wegener’s granulomatosis occurring in a 41-year-old man who was admitted for respiratory symptoms, fever, asthenia, night sweats and weight loss since one month. Chest X-ray and computed tomography showed multiple bilateral pulmonary excavated lesions. A trransparietal lung biopsy was performed. Histological examination showed an area of necrosis, surrounded by a palisade of histiocytes. Some of the histiocytes were multinucleated and formed true granulomas within the wall of the adjacent pulmonary artery. Serology was strongly positive for ANCA. A diagnosis of Wegener granulomatosis was conducted and the patient was started on cyclophosphamide and methylprednisolone as an initial treatment, with a favorable evolution.

Objective: To examine the antioxidant potential of Tunisian Eryngium maritimum (E. maritimum) leaf, root and stems extracts, as well as their phenolic compositions. Methods: The antioxidant activity of different extracts was assessed using DPPH free radical and hydrogen peroxide scavenging assays. Phenolic profiles were determined by means of liquid chromatography (HPLC-DAD). Results: All plant parts were a rich source of phenolics. Polyphenols and flavonoids were present in leaf extracts. E. maritimum leaf extracts displayed the strongest H2O2 scavenging activity (IC50 = 76.83 μg/mL) and the highest DPPH scavenging activity value (IC50 = 47.87 μg/mL) compared to other extracts. Good relationships were observed between antioxidant activities and the total phenolic and flavonoid contents. Nine bioactive compounds were detected in E. maritimum extracts. Conclusions: Our results provided evidence that E. maritimum could be an interesting source of natural antioxidant that can be used to treat divers diseases.

The Schottky diode (Al/p-CuInSe2/FTO) was fabricated by simple deposition of pure Aluminum on the front side of the CuInSe2 thin film. We have investigated its electrical characteristics by measuring the current-voltage (I-V), the capacitance-voltage (C-V) and the electrical impedance in the range of temperature (300 K - 425 K). At room temperature, this heterostructure has shown non-ideal Schottky behavior with 3.98 as ideality factor and 38 μA/cm2 as a reverse saturated current density. The C-V measured at 100 kHz has shown non-linear behavior and an increase with temperature. Similarly, we have estimated, at room temperature, the carrier doping density, the built-in potential and the depletion layer width which are of about 8.66 × 1015 cm﹣3, 1.12 V and 0.37 μm respectively. By the impedance spectroscopy technique, we have found a decrease with temperature of all the serial resistance Rs, the parallel resistance Rp and the capacitance Cp. The frequency dependence of the imaginary part of this impedance was carried out to characterize the carrier transport properties in the heterostructure. From the Arrhenius diagram, we have estimated the activation energy at 460 meV. An equivalent electrical circuit was used for modeling these results.

Algae are reported to be corrosive,while little is known about the role of the algae associated bacteria in the corrosion *** the present study,Halomonas titanicae was isolated from a culture of an alga strain,Spirulina platensis,and identified through 16 S rRNA gene *** behavior of 304L stainless steel(SS)coupons in the presence and absence of *** was characterized by using electrochemical measurements and surface *** results showed that *** significantly accelerated the corrosion rate and decreased the pitting potential of 304L SS in the biotic *** removal of the corrosion products and biofilms,severe pitting corrosion caused by *** was *** largest pit depth after 14 d reached 6.6μm,which was 5.5 times higher than that of the sterile control(1.2μm).This is the first report revealing that an alga associated bacterium can induce microbiologically influenced corrosion(MIC),and a further concern is raised that whether algae play a role in the MIC process.

Introduction: The association of the professional exposure to the decline of the male reproductive function had been the subject of several studies but without arriving to one envisagement undeniable of its existence. The ICSI, technique of reference in severe male infertilities, is visavis unexplained failures whose environmental and professional exposure could be about its cause partly. In this work, we tried to highlight an association between certain factors of professional exposure and the deterioration of the spermatic parameters, then to evaluate the effect of such factors on the result of the ICSI. Materials and Methods: It is about a study of the exposed type—no exposed, realized through collaboration between the Unit of Medicine of the Reproduction and the Service of Medicine of Work of the CHU Farhat Hached of Sousse. This study was based on a questionnaire of which part of the items was collected medical files of the patients raising the general characteristics, the profile of exposure as well as the spermatic parameters and the biological assessment of ICSI. Results: Significant associations between the deterioration of sperm and the professional risk factors such as the exposure to the formaldehydes (p = 0.01) and heat (p = 0.001) were noted. The exposure to formaldehydes was associated at the higher risk of oli gozoospermy, of asthenozoospermy with a significant reduction in mobility (p = 0.05), whereas the talks with cement had a risk higher of teratozoospermy. In addition an exposure to heat was associated at the high risk of oligoteratozoospermy. The total rate of pregnancies after ICSI among 220 patients of our series was of 14.47%. The ICSI balance showed a reduction in total fertility rate (76.6% exposed vs 75.3% no exposed). Conclusion: In spite of the limited number of the patients, this study had shown a correlation between certain professional exposures of origin and the deterioration of sperm. Predictive Factors of Multiple Hospitalizations for Acute Exacerbations of COPD

Background: Multiple hospitalizations for acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD) are associated with considerable morbidity and mortality. Objectives: To identify predictive factors of multiples hospitalizations for AECOPD. Methods: This is a retrospective single center study of consecutive patients with COPD hospitalized at the Department of Respiratory Medicine between January 1990 and December 2015. We calculated for each patient the mean number of hospitalizations for AECOPD/year (H/y). We distinguished 2 groups (G) of patients. G1: <2 H/y and G2: ≥2 H/y. Predictors of multiple admissions identified by univariate analysis were included in the multivariate analysis. Results: The study included 1167 COPD patients (mean age 67 ± 10 years, 97% males). Three hundred six (26%) COPD patients had a mean number of hospitalizations per year ≥ 2. Multivariate logistic regression analysis demonstrated that an mMRC ≥ 2 (Odd ratio [OR] 1.8, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.08 - 2.99, p = 0.022), a low PaO2 (PaO2 OR 0.97, 95% CI 0.95 - 0.99, p = 0.007) and frequent exacerbations (OR 2.95, 95% CI 2.56 - 3.39, p < 0.001) are independent factors associated with multiple admissions for AECOPD. Conclusions: An mMRC ≥ 2, a low PaO2 and frequent exacerbations are independently associated with multiple hospitalizations for AECOPD. The identification of these high risk COPD patients will be helpful in the decision of intervention strategies.
