As of May 3,2023,the Coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)pandemic has resulted in more than 760 million confirmed cases and over 6.9 million deaths.Several patients have developed pneumonia,which can deteriorate into acute respiratory distress syndrome.The primary etiology may be attributed to cytokine storm,which is triggered by the excessive release of proinflammatory cytokines and subsequently leads to immune dysregulation.Considering that high levels of interleukin-6(IL-6)have been detected in several highly pathogenic coronavirus-infected diseases,such as severe acute respiratory syndrome in 2002,the Middle East respiratory syndrome in 2012,and COVID-19,the IL-6 pathway has emerged as a key in the pathogenesis of this hyperinflammatory state.Thus,we review the history of cytokine storm and the process of targeting IL-6 signaling to elucidate the pivotal role played by tocilizumab in combating COVID-19.

During early pregnancy,an orchestrated evolutionary maternal adaption toward tolerance of the semiallogeneic fetus is required to ensure decidualization and early embryo development.Remodeling of the immune system involves natural killer cells(NKs),macrophages,T cells and dendritic cells(DCs) altering the microenvironment in the deciduas.In particular,a unique population of NK cells with a CD56^(bright)CD16^- phenotype in the decidua has been proposed to play a key role in the maternal adaptation to pregnancy.However,there is a tendency for pregnancy immunology to reflect transplantation immunology regarding the assumption that the maternal immune system should be suppressed.This tendency is misleading.We discuss how the immune system is formed in early deciduas and the interactions between maternal NK cells and fetal growth.We propose that the maternal immune response must not be fully suppressed and is even necessary for the local response of uterine NK cells.

The deployment of millimeter-wave(mmWave)cellular systems in dense urban environments with an acceptable coverage and cost-efficient transmission scheme is essential for the rollout of fifth-generation and beyond technology.In this paper,cluster-based analysis of mmWave channel characteristics in two typical dense urban environments is performed.First,radio propagation measurement campaigns are conducted in two identified mmWave bands of 28 and 39 GHz in a central business district and a dense residential area.The customdesigned channel sounder supports high-efficiency directional scanning sounding,which helps collect sufficient data for statistical channel modeling.Next,using an improved auto-clustering algorithm,multipath clusters and their scattering sources are identified.An appropriate measure for inter-and intra-cluster characteristics is provided,which includes the cluster number,the Ricean K-factor,root-mean-squared(RMS)delay spread,RMS angular spread,and their correlations.Comparisons of these parameters across two mmWave bands for both line-of-sight(LoS)and non-light-of-sight(NLoS)links are given.To shed light on the blockage effects,detailed analysis of the propagation mechanisms corresponding to each NLoS cluster is provided,including reflection from exterior walls and diffraction over building corners and rooftops.Finally,the results show that the cluster-based analysis takes full advantage of mmWave beamspace channel characteristics and has further implications for the design and deployment of mmWave wireless networks.

Hepatitis B virus(HBV)-associated hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)is mediated by an inappropriate attack by HBV-specific T cells in patients.However,this immunopathogenic process has not been clarified because of the lack of a suitable animal model.Here,we used immunocompetent Fah^(-/-)mice as the recipients in the adoptive transfer of HBsAg^(+)hepatocytes from HBs-Tg mice to replace the recipient hepatocytes(HBs-HepR).HBs-HepR mice exhitited persistent HBsAg expression with chronic hepatitis and eventually developed HCC with a prevalence of 100%.HBsAg-specific CD8^(+)T cells were generated and specifically and continuously induced hepatocyte apoptosis with progressive chronic inflammation,and the depletion of CD8^(+)T cells or their deficiency prevented HCC,which could then be reproduced by the transfer of HBsAg-specific CD8^(+)T cells.In summary,our results demonstrated that CD8^(+)T cells plays a critical role in HBsAg-driven inflammtion and HCC tumorigenesis.

Natural killer(NK)cells are essential in controlling cancer and infection.However,little is known about the dynamics of the transcriptional regulatory machinery during NK cell differentiation.In this study,we applied the assay of transposase accessible chromatin with sequencing(ATAC-seq)technique in a home-developed in vitro NK cell differentiation system.Analysis of ATAC-seq data illustrated two distinct transcription factor(TF)clusters that dynamically regulate NK cell differentiation.Moreover,two TFs from the second cluster,FOS-like 2(FOSL2)and early growth response 2(EGR2),were identified as novel essential TFs that control NK cell maturation and function.Knocking down either of these two TFs significantly impacted NK cell differentiation.Finally,we constructed a genome-wide transcriptional regulatory network that provides a better understanding of the regulatory dynamics during NK cell differentiation.

In the present work,cyclic voltammetry(CV),square wave voltammetry(SWV)and chronopotentiometry(CP)were used to investigate the electrochemical coreduction behaviors of La(Ⅲ)and Mg(Ⅱ)as well as La(Ⅲ),Mg(Ⅱ)and Mn(Ⅱ)on Mo electrode in LiCl+KCl molten salts.CV and SWV results exhibit that the coreduction mechanism of La(Ⅲ)and Mg(Ⅱ)on Mo electrode is that La(Ⅲ)is reduced and Mg-La intermetallic compound is formed,leading to the deposition potential of La(Ⅲ)shifting to more positive one.The electrochemical signals pertaining to the formation of metallic La,Mg and Mn as well as Mg-La intermetallic compound are also observed by coreduction of La(Ⅲ),Mg(Ⅱ),and Mn(Ⅱ)in LiCl+KCl molten salt on the inert Mo electrode.However,the electrochemical signals associated with the formation of La-Mn and Mg-Mn alloys are not observed,which means that the depolarization effect of La(Ⅲ)and Mg(Ⅱ)does not occur on pre-deposited Mn electrode.The Mg-La-Mn alloys were formed by co-deposition of La(Ⅲ),Mg(Ⅱ),and Mn(Ⅱ)on Mo electrode at various concentration ratios of La(Ⅲ)and Mg(Ⅱ).The results of scanning electron microscopy equipped with energy dispersive spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction displays that the Mg-La-Mn alloys are comprised of La-Mg compound Mg_(17)La_(2),Mg and Mn phases.The concentration ratio of La(Ⅲ)and Mn(Ⅱ)has few effects on the alloy composition.

Machine-Learning-Assisted Optimization and Its Application to Antenna Designs: Opportunities and Challenges

With the rapid development of modern wireless communications and radar, antennas and arrays are becoming more complex, therein having, e.g., more degrees of design freedom, integration and fabrication constraints and design objectives. While fullwave electromagnetic simulation can be very accurate and therefore essential to the design process, it is also very time consuming, which leads to many challenges for antenna design, optimization and sensitivity analysis(SA). Recently, machine-learning-assisted optimization(MLAO) has been widely introduced to accelerate the design process of antennas and arrays. Machine learning(ML) methods, including Gaussian process regression, support vector machine(SVM) and artificial neural networks(ANNs), have been applied to build surrogate models of antennas to achieve fast response prediction. With the help of these ML methods, various MLAO algorithms have been proposed for different applications. A comprehensive survey of recent advances in ML methods for antenna modeling is first presented. Then, algorithms for ML-assisted antenna design, including optimization and SA, are reviewed. Finally, some challenges facing future MLAO for antenna design are discussed.
