Non-pharmaceutical interventions for COVID-19 reduced the incidence of infectious diseases:a controlled interrupted time-series study

Background Non-pharmaceutical interventions(NPIs)have been implemented worldwide to suppress the spread of coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19).However,few studies have evaluated the effect of NPIs on other infectious diseases and none has assessed the avoided disease burden associated with NPIs.We aimed to assess the effect of NPIs on the incidence of infectious diseases during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and evaluate the health economic benefits related to the reduction in the incidence of infectious diseases.Methods Data on 10 notifiable infectious diseases across China during 2010–2020 were extracted from the China Information System for Disease Control and Prevention.A two-stage controlled interrupted time-series design with a quasi-Poisson regression model was used to examine the impact of NPIs on the incidence of infectious diseases.The analysis was first performed at the provincial-level administrative divisions(PLADs)level in China,then the PLAD-specific estimates were pooled using a random-effect meta-analysis.Results A total of 61,393,737 cases of 10 infectious diseases were identified.The implementation of NPIs was associated with 5.13 million(95%confidence interval[CI]3.45‒7.42)avoided cases and USD 1.77 billion(95%CI 1.18‒2.57)avoided hospital expenditures in 2020.There were 4.52 million(95%CI 3.00‒6.63)avoided cases for children and adolescents,corresponding to 88.2%of total avoided cases.The top leading cause of avoided burden attributable to NPIs was influenza[avoided percentage(AP):89.3%;95%CI 84.5‒92.6].Socioeconomic status and population density were effect modifiers.Conclusions NPIs for COVID-19 could effectively control the prevalence of infectious diseases,with patterns of risk varying by socioeconomic status.These findings have important implications for informing targeted strategies to prevent infectious diseases.

The eutrophication of lakes is a global environmental problem.Regulating nitrogen(N)and phosphorus(P)on phytoplankton is considered to be the most important basis of lake eutrophication management.Therefore,the effects of dissolved inorganic carbon(DIC)on phytoplankton and its role in mitigating lake eutrophication have often been overlooked.In this study,the relationships between phytoplankton and DIC concentrations,carbon isotopic composition,nutrients(N and P),and hydrochemistry in the Erhai Lake(a karst lake)were investigated.The results showed that when the dissolved carbon dioxide(CO_(2)(aq))concentrations in the water were higher than 15μmol/L,the productivity of phytoplankton was controlled by the concentrations of TP and TN,especially by that of TP.When the N and P were sufficient and the CO_(2)(aq)concentrations were lower than 15μmol/L,the phytoplankton productivity was controlled by the concentrations of TP and DIC,especially by that of DIC.Additionally,DIC significantly affected the composition of the phytoplankton community in the lake(p<0.05).When the CO_(2)(aq)concentrations were higher than 15μmol/L,the relative abundance of Bacillariophyta and Chlorophyta was much higher than those of harmful Cyanophyta.Thus,high concentrations of CO_(2)(aq)can inhibit harmful Cyanophyta blooms.

An efficient and highly available framework of data recency enhancement for eventually consistent data stores

Data items are usually replicated in modem dis- tributed data stores to obtain high performance and avail- ability. However, the availability-consistency and latency- consistency trade-offs exist in data replication, thus system designers intend to choose weak consistency models, such as eventual consistency, which may result in stale reads. Since stale data items may lead to serious application semantic problems, we consider how to increase the probability of data recency which provides a uniform view on recent versions of data items for all clients. In this work, we propose HARP, a framework that can enhance data recency of eventually con- sistent distributed data stores in an efficient and highly avail- able way. Through detecting possible stale reads under fail- ures or not, HARP can perform reread operations to elim- inate stale results only when needed based on our analysis on write/read processes. We also present solutions on how to deal with some practical anomalies in HARP, including de- layed, reordered and dropped messages and clock drift, and show how to extend HARP to multiple datacenters. Finally we implement HARP based on Cassandra, and the experi- ments show that HARP can effectively eliminate stale reads, with a low overhead （less than 6.9%） compared with original eventually consistent Cassandra.

Nutrient retranslocation from the fine roots of Fraxinus mandshurica and Larix olgensis in northeastern China

Nutrient retranslocation in trees is important in nutrient budgets and energy flows in forest ecosystems. We investigated nutrient retranslocation in the fine roots of a Manchurian Ash （Fraxinus mandshurica） and a Larch （Larix olgensis） plantation in northeastern China. Nutrient retranslocation in the fine roots was investigated using three methods, specifically, nutrient concentration, the ratio of Ca to other elements （Ca/other elements ratio） and nutrient content. The method based on nutrient content proved most suitable when investigating nutrient retranslocation from fine roots of the two species. The nutrient-content-based method showed that there were retranslocations of N, P, K and Mg from the fine roots of Manchurian Ash, with retranslocation efficiencies of 13, 25, 65, and 38 %, respectively, whereas there were no Ca retranslocations. There were retranslocations of N, P, K, Ca and Mg from the fine roots of Larch, with retranslocation efficiencies of 31, 40, 52, 23 and 25 %, respectively.

Recommender systems based on ranking performance optimization

The rapid development of online services and information overload has inspired the fast development of recommender systems, among which collaborative filtering algorithms and model-based recommendation approaches are wildly exploited. For instance, matrix factorization （MF） demonstrated successful achievements and advantages in assisting internet users in finding interested information. These existing models focus on the prediction of the users＇ ratings on unknown items. The performance is usually evaluated by the metric root mean square error （RMSE）. However, achieving good performance in terms of RMSE does not always guarantee a good ranking performance. Therefore, in this paper, we advocate to treat the recommendation as a ranking problem. Normalized discounted cumulative gain （NDCG） is chosen as the optimization target when evaluating the ranking accuracy. Specifically, we present three ranking-oriented recommender algorithms, NSME AdaMF and AdaNSME NSMF builds a NDCG approximated loss function for Matrix Factorization. AdaMF is based on an algorithm by adaptively combining component MF recommenders with boosting method. To combine the advantages of both algorithms, we propose AdaNSME which is a hybird of NSMF and AdaME and show the superiority in both ranking accuracy and model generalization. In addition, we compare our proposed approaches with the state-of-the-art recommendation algorithms. The comparison studies confirm the advantage of our proposed approaches.

Electroorganic synthesis is an emerging area of high impact research in organic chemistry, which is considered as one of the green and efficient methods and attracts growing research attention. In this review, we summarized comprehensively the recent literature reports on the electrochemical oxidative difunctionalization of unsaturated C—C bonds. The reaction types described in this review included electrochemical intermolecular cyclization, electrochemical intramolecular cyclization, and electrochemical difunctionalization of alkenes/alkynes. This review focuses on the discussion of its synthetic generality for the preparation of functionalized compounds and the related electrochemical oxidative reaction mechanism.

Influence of the biological carbon pump effect on the sources and deposition of organic matter in Fuxian Lake, a deep oligotrophic lake in southwest China

Biological carbon pumping(BCP)is a key process in which dissolved inorganic carbon in terrestrial aquatic ecosystems is utilized by aquatic autotrophs for photosynthesis and transformed into autochthonous organic matter(AOC).However,the mechanisms underlying BCP and the amount of generated AOC deposited effectively,are still poorly understood.Therefore,we conducted a systematic study combining modern hydrochemical monitoring and a sediment trap experiment in Fuxian Lake(Yunnan,SW China),the second-deepest plateau,oligotrophic freshwater lake in China.Temperature,pH,EC(electrical conductivity),DO(dissolved O2),[HCO3^-],[Ca^2+],SIc,partial CO2(pCO2)pressure,and carbon isotopic compositions of HCO3^-(δ^13CDIc)in water from Fuxian Lake all displayed distinct seasonal and vertical variations.This was especially apparent in an inverse correlation between pCO2 and DO,indicating that variations of hydrochemistry in the lake water were mainly controlled by the metabolism of the aquatic phototrophs.Furthermore,the lowest C/N ratios and highestδ^13Corg were recorded in the trap sediments.Analyses of the C/N ratio demonstrated that the proportions of AOC ranged from 30%to 100%of all OC,indicating that AOC was an important contributor to sedimentary organic matter(OC).It was calculated that the AOC flux in Fuxian Lake was 20.43 t C km^-2 in 2017.Therefore,AOC produced by carbonate weathering and aquatic photosynthesis could potentially be a significant carbon sink and may have an important contribution to solving the lack of carbon sinks in the global carbon cycle.

气候因子对云冷杉针叶混交林主要针叶树种径向生长的贡献率分析

【目的】为分析气候变化对针叶树种径向生长的影响,揭示针叶混交林对气候变化的响应规律,在全球气候变暖的背景下,对森林生态系统的适应性经营提供理论支撑。【方法】以金沟岭林场云冷杉针叶混交林中的3个针叶树种为研究对象,建立3个针叶树种的树轮宽度标准化年表,分析3个树种的树轮宽度与气候因子之间的相关关系,明确该地区显著限制其径向生长的气候因子,并用层次分割法量化气候因子对各树种树轮宽度变化的贡献率。【结果】在95%的置信区间下,与气候因子相关分析显示:红松和臭冷杉的径向生长同时受气温和降水的影响,与生长季初期气温正相关;鱼鳞云杉的树轮宽度主要受气温影响,与秋冬季节气温负相关,与降水量的整体相关性较低。3个树种均受到上一年气候因子的影响,有一定的“滞后效应”。滑动相关分析表明,本研究3个主要针叶树种与气候因子的响应关系存在差异,主要表现为负相关性呈增强趋势。3月平均气温对红松的贡献率最高,为34.56%,4月最低气温对臭冷杉的贡献率最高,为22.29%,对鱼鳞云杉的贡献率为60.89%。【结论】层次分割分析法能够有效量化气候因子对各树种树轮生长的贡献率,分析结果可为制定该地区应对未来气候变化的经营管理措施提供理论参考。

Software systems are present all around us and playing their vital roles in our daily life.The correct functioning of these systems is of prime concern.In addition to classical testing techniques,formal techniques like model checking are used to reinforce the quality and reliability of software systems.However,obtaining of behavior model,which is essential for model-based techniques,of unknown software systems is a challenging task.To mitigate this problem,an emerging black-box analysis technique,called Model Learning,can be applied.It complements existing model-based testing and verification approaches by providing behavior models of blackbox systems fully automatically.This paper surveys the model learning technique,which recently has attracted much attention from researchers,especially from the domains of testing and verification.First,we review the background and foundations of model learning,which form the basis of subsequent sections.Second,we present some well-known model learning tools and provide their merits and shortcomings in the form of a comparison table.Third,we describe the successful applications of model learning in multidisciplinary fields,current challenges along with possible future works,and concluding remarks.
