Characteristics of dissolved sugars in the Southern Yap Trench from sea surface to hadal zone

2,4,6-Tripyridine-s-triazine(TPTZ)spectrophotometric method was applied to determine the concentrations of dissolved monosaccharides(MCHO),polysaccharides(PCHO),and total carbohydrate(TCHO)in seawater samples collected from sea surface to hadal zone and sediment-seawater interface of the Southern Yap Trench in the Western Pacific *** show that the concentrations of MCHO,PCHO,and TCHO ranged from 6.3 to 22.3μmol C/L,1.1 to 25.4μmol C/L,and 12.1 to 44.9μmol C/L,respectively,from the euphotic layer to the hadal zone of the *** different sampling stations,the concentrations of MCHO,PCHO,and TCHO in the seawater showed complex vertical variation characteristics,but the overall variation trends were decreasing with water *** the Southern Yap Trench,the maximum concentration of MCHO in the seawater appeared in the euphotic layer,and the minimum in the hadal *** maximum concentration of PCHO appeared in the euphotic layer,and the minimum in the bathypelagic *** water layer where the maxima and minima of the average concentration of TCHO appeared was consistent with that of *** was the major component of TCHO in the seawater of the Southern Yap *** the seawater from the sediment-seawater interface,the concentrations of MCHO,PCHO,and TCHO ranged from 8.4 to 10.6μmol C/L,3.8 to 5.8μmol C/L,and 12.2 to 15.2μmol C/L,respectively,and MCHO was the major component of *** key factors affecting the concentration and existing forms of dissolved sugars in the seawater of the Southern Yap Trench included photosynthesis,respiration,polysaccharide hydrolysis,adsorption and desorption of particulate matter,trench“funnel effect”,deep ocean currents,sediment resuspension,and *** study provided fundamental data about labile organic matter in abyss and hadal zone of marine environment,which is significant for further understanding of deep-sea organic carbon cycle.

Removal of arsenic by pilot-scale vertical flow constructed wetland

Four pilot-scale Vertical Flow Constructed Wetlands(VFCWs)filled with gravel and planted with Phragmites australis were operated for seven months in the field to study the efficiency of arsenic removal in contaminated *** average arsenic removal efficiency by the VFCWs was 52.0%±20.2%,52.9%±21.3%,and 40.3%±19.4%at the theoretical concentrations of 50µg/L(CW50),100µg/L(CW100),and 500µg/L(CW500)arsenic in the wastewater,*** results also showed no significant differences in the removal efficiency for conventional contaminants(nitrogen,phosphorus,or chemical oxygen demand)between wastewater treatments that did or did not contain arsenic(P>0.05),except for phosphorus in *** highest average monthly removal rate of arsenic occurred in August(55.9%–74.5%)and the lowest in November(7.8%–15.5%).The arsenic removal efficiency of each VFCW was positively correlated with temperature(P<0.05).Arsenic accumulated in both substrates and plants,with greater accumulation associated with increased arsenic concentrations in the *** maximum accumulated arsenic concentrations in the substrates and plants at the end of the experiment were 4.47 mg/kg and 281.9 mg/kg,respectively,both present in *** translocation factor(TF)of arsenic in the reeds was less than 1,with most of the arsenic accumulating in the *** arsenic mass balance indicated that substrate accumulation contributed most to arsenic removal(19.9%–30.4%),with lower levels in plants(3.8%–9.5%).In summary,VFCWs are effective for the treatment of arsenic-containing wastewater.

Last Deglacial Soft-Sediment Deformation at Shawan on the Eastern Tibetan Plateau and Implications for Deformation Processes and Seismic Magnitudes

The eastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau is characterized by frequent earthquakes; however, research of paleo-earthquakes in the area has been limited^ owing to the alpine topography and strong erosion. Detailed investigations of soft-sediment deformation(SSD) structures are valuable for understanding the trigger mechanisms, deformation processes, and the magnitudes of earthquakes that generate such structures, and help us to understand tectonic activity in the region. To assess tectonic activity during the late Quaternary, we studied a well-exposed sequence of Shawan lacustrine sediments, 7.0 m thick, near Lake Diexi in the upper reaches of the Minjiang River. Deformation is recorded by both ductile structures(load casts, flame structures,pseudonodules, ball-and-pillow structures, and liquefied convolute structures) and brittle structures(liquefied breccia, and microfaults). Taking into account the geodynamic setting of the area and its known tectonic activity, these SSD structures can be interpreted in terms of seismic shocks. The types and forms of the structures,the maximum liquefaction distances, and the thicknesses of the horizons with SSD structures in the Shawan section indicate that they record six strong earthquakes of magnitude 6-7 and one with magnitude >7. A recent study showed that the Songpinggou fault is the seismogenic structure of the 1933 Ms7.5 Diexi earthquake. The Shawan section is located close to the junction of the Songpinggou and Minjiang faults, and records seven earthquakes with magnitudes of ?7. We infer,therefore, that the SSD structures in the Shawan section document deglacial activity along the Songpinggou fault.

Distribution characteristics of lipids in hadal sediment in the Yap Trench

In this study,cored sediment samples collected by the Jiaolong Submersible at 6779 m depth from the hadal zone of the Yap Trench in May 2016 were sliced in 1-cm interval from top to bottom,and lipids in each sediment layer were quantitatively and qualitatively *** vertical distribution profiles of the lipids in the sediment sample,their main existing forms,and their possible sources were *** results show that the concentration of lipid in the surface sediment was the highest with the carbon number from 12 to 27,dominated by medium and short-chain *** total concentration of fatty acids in surface sediment was much higher than those in the offshore and deep-sea areas,being up to 325.77μg/g due to the funnel effect caused by the“V”terrain of the *** acid 18:0 was the most abundant lipids in the sediment *** high concentrations of fatty acid 18:1ω7 and alkanes indicated the existence of hydrothermal fluids in the study *** addition,saturated fatty acids and monounsaturated fatty acids existed mainly in free form,and polyunsaturated fatty acids existed mainly in bound *** of the alkanes were in bound form,and their major source was autochthounous *** carbon number of alcohols in the sediment sample ranged from 12 to 20,mainly existed in bound *** source of fatty acids was mainly autochthonous input,and the neutral lipids had both marine and terrestrial *** is the first study of lipids in hadal sediment of the Yap *** results will promote deeper understanding of organic carbon cycle in marine environment.

Satellite Thermal Infrared Earthquake Precursor to the Wenchuan M_s 8.0 Earthquake in Sichuan,China,and its Analysis on Geo-dynamics

Based on an interpretation and study of the satellite remote-sensing images of FY-2C thermal infrared 1st wave band （10.3-11.3 μm） designed in China, the authors found that there existed obvious and isolated satellite thermal infrared anomalies before the 5.12 Wenchuan Ms 8.0 Earthquake. These anomalies had the following characteristics：（1） The precursor appeared rather early： on March 18, 2008, i.e., 55 days before the earthquake, thermal infrared anomalies began to occur; （2） The anomalies experienced quite many and complex evolutionary stages： the satellite thermal infrared anomalies might be divided into five stages, whose manifestations were somewhat different from each other. The existence of so many anomaly stages was probably observed for the first time in numerous cases of satellite thermal infrared research on earthquakes; （3） Each stage lasted quite a long time, with the longest one spanning 13 days; （4） An evident geothermal anomaly gradient was distributed along the Longmen seismic fracture zone, and such a phenomenon might also be discovered for the first time in satellite thermal infrared earthquake research. This discovery is therefore of great guiding and instructive significance in the study of the earthquake occurrence itself and the trend of the postearthquake phenomena.

Effect of Bauxite Aggregate on Properties of Al_2O_3-SiC-C Iron Trough Castables

A1203-SiC-C iron trough castables were prepared using high alumina bauxite clinker GL-90 （〉 1 mm ） or homogenized bauxite GL-88 to replace the traditional brown corundum aggregates （〉 1 mm ） to reduce the cost of iron trough castables. Effects of the two bauxite aggregates on properties of iron trough eastables were investigated. The results show that the two kinds of bauxite affect flowability, bulk density, strength and slag corrosion resistance of trough castables differently. Compared with homogenized bauxite, high alumina bauxite clinker is more suitable to substitute brown corundum. The castables prepared from the bauxite clinker have similar performances with those prepared from brown corundum, especially used in medium or small blast furnaces with weak thermal impact and lower temperature hot metal. However, in large blast furnaces with severe thermal impact and high temperature hot metal, the performances of the two castables are significantly different. So it is suggested to use the brown corundum based castables in the front gyral zone of the slag skimmer.

The corona-generated space charge may vary in different air pressures,and the quantitative law between the corona-generated space charge density and air pressure has never been *** work utilised computational approaches to explore the role of air pressure in the variation of negative corona-generated space charge.A negative fluid model in which the air pressure could be varied was built up to calculate the charged-particle density and electric field under different applied *** continuity equations were solved by flux corrected transport algorithm and the Poisson equation was computed by the successive over relaxation *** variations of important parameters due to air pressure were *** particles densities of electrons,positive ions and negative ions at standard and low atmosphere pressures were computed,which increased markedly due to the decrease of atmosphere *** fixed applied voltages,the exponential decay law between the maximal values of electron/positive ion densities at the head of the streamer and air pressure could be *** quantitative law between the maximal values of electron/positive ion densities at the head of the streamer and the applied voltage,relative air density was also achieved.

Humidity effects on the ground-level resultant electric field of positive DC conductors

The effects of humidity on the ground-level resultant electric field around positive DC conductors were studied both experimentally and numerically. Experiments were carried out in an artificial climate chamber, the results of which showed that the photon count and the groundlevel resultant electric field strength both increased with increasing relative humidity. Numerical calculations for different values of relative humidity were carried out, including solutions of the positive corona inception voltage and the ion-flow field, for which a photoionization model and the upstream finite element method were employed, respectively. In order to analyze the effects of humidity, three main factors were considered: the ionization coefficient, the attachment coefficient in the photoionization model and the modified ion mobility of the charged water particles. The results indicated that, with increasing relative humidity, increasing values of the effective ionization coefficient were responsible for a reduction in the inception voltage, and the reduction reinforced the ground-level resultant electric field. Moreover, due to the charged water particles and the lower ion mobility with increasing relative humidity, the space charge density distribution was enhanced, which also strengthened the ground-level resultant electric field.
