Hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) is a prevalent and highly malignant cancer throughout the world.Effective treatment of this disease is impeded by the high rate of metastasis, recurrence, and chemoresistance. Recent studies have revealed the close relationship between the malignant phenotype of HCC and cancer stem cells(CSCs). Therefore, CSC-targeted therapy is considered a promising strategy to eradicate HCC. Traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) can be effective in preventing recurrence and metastasis of some advanced HCC. A growing amount of literature has discovered that extracts or compounds derived from TCM exert an anti-CSC effect. This review introduces some formulas and chemical compounds derived from TCMs that have been reported to inhibit CSCs of HCC;these TCM-related drugs may help to provide an alternative approach to help manage cancers, especially for HCC which has a great potential of metastasis, recurrence, and chemoresistance.

OBJECTIVE： This study aims to evaluate the bioactivity of five components of the traditional Chinese medicine complex prescription Jiangzhi granules against hepatocellular steatosis. METHODS： The five major components, including protopanaxadiol, tanshinone IIA, emodin, chlorogenic acid, and nuciferine, were extracted from Jiangzhi granules. Their cytotoxicity was assessed to determine the safe dose of each component for HepG2 cells. HepG2 cellular steatosis was induced using 1 mmol/L of free fatty acids （FFAs） for 24 h, and then treated with each component at high, intermediate, and low doses （500, 50, and 5 μmol/L）, respectively for another 24 h. The effects on HepG2 steatosis were observed directly under optical phase microscopy, or through oil red O staining and Nile red assays. In addition, the levels of reactive oxygen species （ROS） in the steatotic HepG2 cells with and without high-dose protopanaxadiol treatment were measured using fluorescent dye 2＇,7＇-dichlorodihydrofluorescein diacetate staining. RESULTS： No obvious cytotoxicity was observed in the HepG2 cells incubated with each of the five components at up to 500μmol/L. At 24 h after incubation with FFAs, the HepG2 cells swelled and many lipid droplets accumulated. The lipid content was attenuated after 24 h of incubation with protopanaxadiol, tanshinone IIA, and emodin at 500 or 50 μmol/L （P 〈 0.05）, especially with 500 μmol/L protopanaxadiol （P 〈 0.01）. In addition, the ROS level was elevated in steatotic cells, but decreased after intervention with 500μmol/L protopanaxadiol （P 〈 0.05）. CONCLUSION： Protopanaxadiol, tanshinone IIA, and emodin alleviate hepatocellular steatosis in a dose-dependent manner, and oxidative stress regulation may partially contribute to the effects of protopanaxadiol. ：

Objective: To find a natural plant essential oil(EO) with excellent antimicrobial effect on food-borne bacteria and to explore the mechanism of its antimicrobial function against Escherichia coli(E. coli). Methods: The antimicrobial activity of seven EOs against Gramnegative E. coli ATCC 8739 and Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538 was investigated using agar disk diffusion method, and the minimum inhibitory concentration(MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration(MBC) of each EO was determined using the broth dilution method. The chemical composition of the Trachyspermum copticum(T. copticum) EO was analyzed using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry(GC/MS). In order to explore the mechanism of the antimicrobial action, 1 MIC and 2 MIC of T. copticum EO was added to a suspension of E. coli, the growth curve and the scanning electron microscopy(SEM) analysis of E. coli, and the release of cell constituents and protein and potassium ions from the bacterial cell were measured. Results: The T. copticum EO had the best antimicrobial activity against the test bacteria, and 10 compounds accounting for 94.57% of the total oil were identified, with the major components being thymol(46.22%), p-cymene(19.03%), and 毭-terpinene(22.41%). The addition of 1 MIC T. copticum EO significantly inhibited the growth of E. coliand increased the release of cell constituents and protein and potassium ions from the bacterial cells. Scanning electron micrographs showed that T. copticum EO caused most of the E. colicell membranes to collapse and rupture, leading to cell death. Conclusions: These results indicate that T. copticum EO is a good natural antimicrobial agent for food-borne pathogens.

AIM To explore the anti-tumor effects of esophageal cancerrelated gene 2(ECRG2) in combination with cisplatin(DDP) in DDP-resistant esophageal cancer cells(EC9706/DDP).METHODS A drug-resistant cell model was established, with EC9706/DDP cells being treated with ECRG2 and/or DDP. Cell viability was examined by MTT assay. The rate of cell apoptosis was determined by flow cytometry. The mR NA expression levels of proliferating cell nuclear antigen(PCNA), metallothionein(MT), and p53 were determined by RT-PCR and PCNA, while MT and p53 protein expression levels were determined by western blotting.RESULTS The anti-proliferative effect of ECRG2 in combination with DDP was superior when compared to ECRG2 or DDP alone. The inhibition rate for the combination reached its peak(51.33%) at 96 h. The early apoptotic rates of the control, ECRG2 alone, DDP alone, and ECRG2 plus DDP groups were 5.71% ± 0.27%, 12.68% ± 0.61%, 14.15% ± 0.87%, and 27.96% ±0.36%, respectively. Although all treatment groups were significantly different from the control group(P < 0.05), the combination treatment of ECRG2 plus DDP performed significantly better when compared to either ECRG2 or DDP alone(P < 0.05). The combination of ECRG2 and DDP significantly upregulated p53 m RNA and protein levels and downregulated PCNA m RNA and protein levels compared to ECRG2 or DDP alone(P < 0.05). However, no changes were seen in the expression of MT mR NA or protein.CONCLUSION ECRG2 in combination with DDP can inhibit viability and induce apoptosis in esophageal cancer DDP-resistant cells, possibly via upregulation of p53 expression and downregulation of PCNA expression. These findings suggest that the combination of ECRG2 and DDP may be a promising strategy for the clinical treatment of esophageal cancers that are resistant to DDP.

Acute Respiratory Disease at a Chinese Military Recruitment Training Center: Three-Year Consecutive Investigation

Background Military recruits are at a higher risk of acute respiratory disease(ARD) and the causative agents might change over time, which needs to be investigated. Methods The nasopharyngeal swabs and blood samples were consecutively collected from conscripts for three years in a military training center. The real-time fluorescent quantitative PCR assays were conducted for 15 species of common respiratory pathogens; the serum anti-Legionella pneumophila antibodies were detected by indirect immunofluorescence(IIF) assay, and serum anti-Microplasma pneumoniae antibodies, serum anti-influenza B virus and anti-influenza A virus-Ig M and Ig G were detected by ELISA. Results The prevalences of ARD were 59.3%(108/182) in 2008, 23.3%(50/215) in 2009,and 19.6%(40/204) in 2010. Among the patients with ARD from 2008 to 2010, the influenza B virus infection accounted for 45.4%, 30.0% and 55.0%, and seasonal influenza A virus infection for 8.3%, 8.0% and 5.0%, respectively; the positive rates of serum anti-Legionella pneumophila and anti-Microplasma pneumoniae antibodies in recruits was lower than 10% each year respectively in the three years without diagnostic significance. Conclusion The early appropriate diagnosis and treatment of ARD in military personnel will ensure the power strength of armed forces.

Background:Polydatin,a glucoside of resveratrol,has shown protective effects against various diseases.However,little is known about its effect on hepatic ischemia-reperfusion(I/R)injury.This study aimed to elucidate whether polydatin protects liver against I/R-induced injury and to explore the underlying mechanism.Methods:After gavage feeding polydatin once daily for a week,mice underwent a partial hepatic I/R procedure.Serum alanine aminotransferase(ALT)/aspartate aminotransferase(AST),hematoxylin-eosin(H&E)and TdT-mediated dUTP nick-end labeling(TUNEL)staining were used to evaluate liver injury.The severity related to the inflammatory response and reactive oxygen species(ROS)production was also investigated.Furthermore,immunofluorescence and Western blotting were used to detect macrophage polarization and the NF-κB signaling pathway in macrophages.Results:Compared with the I/R group,polydatin pretreatment significantly attenuated I/R-induced liver damage and apoptosis.The oxidative stress marker(dihydroethidium fluorescence,malondialdehyde,superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase)and I/R related inflammatory cytokines(interleukin1β,interleukin-10 and tumor necrosis factor-α)were significantly suppressed after polydatin treatment.In addition,the result of immunofluorescence indicated that polydatin reduced the polarization of macrophages toward M1 macrophages both in vivo and in vitro.Western blotting showed that polydatin inhibited the pro-inflammatory function of RAW264.7 via down-regulating the NF-κB signaling pathway.Conclusions:Polydatin protects the liver from I/R injury by remodeling macrophage polarization via NFκB signaling.

Due to the array steering vector errors and small-sample errors and so on,the performance of the Standard Capon Beamformer(SCB) may become worse than that of the Conventional Beamformer(CBF) in practical engineering applications. Nowadays, almost all existing algorithms to improve the robustness of SCB utilize the steepest descent method, conjugate gradient method, least mean squares(LMS) method and so on. However, most of them have the slow convergence and inefficient computation. Aiming at the above problems, this paper presents a unified process to solve them by the second-order cone programming(SOCP) theory,which can not only enhance the convergence speed but also improve the calculation accuracy so as to overcome the shortcomings of the previous optimization solutions effectively. It turns out that most adaptive beamforming algorithms involve a nonconvex problem which is minimization of a quadratic function subject to infinitely many non-convex quadratic constraints. In this paper, it is shown that the proposed algorithm can be reformulated in a convex form as the so-called SCOP and solved efficiently(in polynomial time) using the well-established interior point method.Finally, computer simulations show the algorithm’s excellent performance as compared with existing adaptive beamforming algorithms via the computer simulation examples.

Natural mechanical materials,such as bamboo and bone,often exhibit superior specific mechanical properties due to their hierarchical porous architectures.Using the principle of hierarchy as inspiration can facilitate the development of hierarchical mechanical metamaterials(HMMs)across multiple length scales via 3D printing.In this work,we propose self-similar HMMs that combine octet-truss(OCT)architecture as the first and second orders,with cubic architecture as the third or more orders.These HMMs were fabricated using stereolithography 3D printing,with the length sizes ranging from approximately 200µm to the centimeter scale.The compressive stress–strain behaviors of HMMs exhibit a zigzag characteristic,and the toughness and energy absorption can be significantly enhanced by the hierarchical architecture.The compressive moduli are comparable to that of natural materials,and the strengths are superior to that of most polymer/metal foams,alumina hollow/carbon lattices,and other natural materials.Furthermore,the flexural stress–strain curves exhibit a nonlinear behavior,which can be attributed to the hierarchical architecture and local damage propagation.The relatively high mechanical properties can be attributed to the synergistic effect of the stretch-dominated OCT architecture and the bending-dominated cube architecture.Lastly,an ultralight HMM-integrated unmanned aerial vehicle(HMM-UAV)was successfully designed and printed.The HMM-UAV is~85%lighter than its bulk counterpart,remarkably extending the flight duration time(~53%).This work not only provides an effective design strategy for HMMs but also further expands the application benchmark of HMMs.
