Meta-analysis for the Association of Apolipoprotein E ε2/ε3/ε4 Polymorphism with Coronary Heart Disease

Background：Coronary heart disease （CHD） is a multifactorial disease and is thought to have a polygenic basis.Apolipoprotein E （APOE） gene is one such candidate with its common ε2/ε3/ε4 polymorphism in CHD.In recent years,numerous case-control studies have investigated the relationship ofAPOE polymorphism with CHD risk.However,the results are confusing.Methods：To clarify this point,we undertook a meta-analysis based on 14 published studies including 5746 CHD cases and 19,120 controls.Crude odds ratios （ORs） with 95% confidence intervals （CIs） were assessed for association using a random-effects or fixed-effects model using STATA version 10 （StataCorp LP,College Station,TX,USA）.Results：Overall,the analysis showed that carriers of APOE ε2 allele decreased risk for CHD （ε2 allele vs.ε3 allele：OR =0.82,95% CI：0.75-0.90,P 〈 0.001;ε2 carriers vs.ε3 carriers：OR =0.81,95% CI：0.73-0.89,P 〈 0.001）,compared with those carrying ε3 allele,especially in Caucasian population.However,those with ε4 allele had a significant increased risk for CHD （ε4 allele vs.ε3 allele：OR =1.34,95% CI：1.15-1.57,P 〈 0.001）,especially in Mongoloid population.Potential publication bias was observed in the genetic model of ε4 versus ε3,but the results might not be affected deeply by the publication bias.When we accounted for publication bias using the trim and fill method,the results were not materially alerted,suggesting the stability of our results.Conclusions：Taken together,our meta-analysis supported a genetic association between APOE gene and CHD.ε4 increased the risk of CHD,whereas ε2 decreased the risk of CHD

Effects of perioperative rosuvastatin on postoperative delirium in elderly patients:A randomized,double-blind,and placebo-controlled trial

BACKGROUND Experimental evidence has indicated the benefits of statins for the treatment of postoperative delirium.Previously,clinical trials did not reach definite conclusions on the effects of statins on delirium.Some clinical trials have indicated that statins reduce postoperative delirium and improve outcomes,while some studies have reported negative results.AIM To evaluate whether perioperative rosuvastatin treatment reduces the incidence of delirium and improves clinical outcomes.METHODS This randomized,double-blind,and placebo-controlled trial was conducted in a single center in Jiangsu,China.This study enrolled patients aged greater than 60 years who received general anesthesia during elective operations and provided informed consent.A computer-generated randomization sequence(in a 1:1 ratio)was used to randomly assign patients to receive either rosuvastatin(40 mg/d)or placebo.Participants,care providers,and investigators were all masked to group assignments.The primary endpoint was the incidence of delirium,which was assessed twice daily with the Confusion Assessment Method during the first 7 postoperative days.Analyses were performed on intention-to-treat and safety populations.RESULTS Between January 1,2017 and January 1,2020,3512 patients were assessed.A total of 821 patients were randomly assigned to receive either placebo(n=411)or rosuvastatin(n=410).The incidence of postoperative delirium was significantly lower in the rosuvastatin group[23(5.6%)of 410 patients]than in the placebo group{42(13.5%)of 411 patients[odds ratios(OR)=0.522,95%confidence interval(CI):0.308-0.885;P<0.05]}.No significant difference in 30-d all-cause mortality(6.1%vs 8.7%,OR=0.67,95%CI:0.39-1.2,P=0.147)was observed between the two groups.Rosuvastatin decreased the hospitalization time(13.8±2.5 vs 14.2±2.8,P=0.03)and hospitalization expenses(9.3±2.5 vs 9.8±2.9,P=0.007).No significant differences in abnormal liver enzymes(9.0%vs 7.1%,OR=1.307,95%CI:0.787-2.169,P=0.30)or rhabdomyolysis(0.73%vs 0.24%,OR=3.020,95%CI:0.31-29.2,P=0.

Temporal changes of symbiont density and host fitness after rifampicin treatment in a whitefly of the Bemisia tabaci species complex

Microbial symbionts are essential or important partners to phloem-feeding insects. Antibiotics have been used to selectively eliminate symbionts from their host insects and establish host lines with or without certain symbionts for investigating functions of the symbionts. In this study, using the antibiotic rifampicin we attempted to selectively eliminate certain symbionts from a population of the Middle East-Asia Minor 1 whitefly of the Bemisia tabaci species complex, which harbors the primary symbiont ＂Candidatus Portiera aleyrodidarum＂ and two secondary symbionts ＂Candidatus Hamiltonella defensa＂ and Rickettsia. Neither the primary nor the secondary symbionts were completely depleted in the adults （F0） that fed for 48 h on a diet treated with rifampicin at concentrations of 1 100/zg/mL. However, both the primary and secondary symbionts were nearly completely depleted in the offspring （F 1） of the rifampicin-treated adults. Although the F1 adults produced some eggs （F2）, most of the eggs failed to hatch and none of them reached the second instar, and consequently the rifampicin-treated whitefly colony vanished at the F2 generation. Interestingly, quantitative polymerase chain reaction assays showed that in the rifampicin-treated whiteflies, the density of the primary symbiont was reduced at an obviously slower pace than the secondary symbionts. Mating experiments between rifampicin-treated and untreated adults demonstrated that the negative effects ofrifampicin on host fitness were expressed when the females were treated by the antibiotic, and whether males were treated or not by the antibiotic had little contribution to the negative effects. These observations indicate that with this whitefly population it is not feasible to selectively eliminate the secondary symbionts using rifampicin without affecting the primary symbiont and establish host lines for experimental studies. Background Reserpine is currently used by millions of Chinese hypertensive patients, in spite of the continued concern of its depressogenic effect, even when used in low dose. This study aimed to investigate the association between low-dose reserpine use and depression in older Chinese hypertensive patient. Methods In this cross-sectional, case-control study, we recruited patient aged 60 years or over who had regularly taken one or two tables of “compound reserpine and triamterene tablets (CRTTs)” for more than one year (reserpine user) from 26 community health centers located in 10 provinces in China. For each patient who took CRTTs, we selected an age (within five years) and sex matched hypertensive patient who had never taken any drugs containing reserpine (non-reserpine user) as control. Depressive symptoms were evaluated using a Chinese depression scale adapted from the Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale. Demographic, clinical data and laboratory examination results within six months were collected. Results From August 2018 to December 2018, 787 reserpine user and 787 non-reserpine user were recruited. The mean age of all study subjects was 70.3 years, with about equal numbers of males and females. The mean depression score was 40.4 in reserpine users and 40.6 in non-reserpine users (P = 0.7). The majority of study subject had a depression score < 53 (87.6% in reserpine users and 88.2% in non-reserpine users, respectively). There were no significant differences in the prevalence of mild, moderate or severe depression in reserpine users and non-reserpine users. Conclusions There is no association between low-dose reserpine use and depression in older hypertensive patient. The role of reserpine in the treatment and control of hypertension should be reconsidered;and further studies, especially randomized, controlled clinical trials to compare efficacy and safety of reserpine and other widely recommended anti-hypertensive agents are needed.

Social hierarchy is a general self-organizational scheme in animal societies in which each member achieves a certain status of domination or subordination when getting access to resources,with profound consequences for survival,health,reproductive success,and multiple behaviors[1,2].The prefrontal cortex(PFC)was recognized as a central regulator of neuronal circuits determining the formation of social hierarchy;brain areas upstream of the PFC convey information about social status,and downstream brain regions execute dominance behavior[3].Social deficits have been suggested to be due to an elevation of excitatory/inhibitory(E/l)balance within the mouse dorsomedial(dm)PFC[4].A compensatory increase of inhibitory cell excitability partially rescued social deficits caused by such a disturbance of E/l balance.

Inorganic ionic polymerization:From biomineralization to materials manufacturing

Biomineralization process regulates the growth of inorganic minerals by complex molecules,proteins,and cells,endowing bio-materials with marvels structures and excellent properties.The intricate structures and compositions found in biominerals have inspired scientists to design and synthesize numerous artificial biomimetic materials.The methodology for controlling the formation of inorganics plays a pivotal role in achieving biomimetic structures and compositions.However,the current approach predominantly relies on the classical nucleation theory,which hinders the precise preparation of inorganic materials by replicating the biomineralization strategy.Recently,the development of“inorganic ionic polymerization”strategy has enabled us to regulate the arrangement of inorganic ions from solution to solid phase,which establishes an artificial way to produce inorganic materials analogous to the biomineralization process.Based on inorganic ionic polymerization,a series of achievements have been realized for the biomimetic preparation,including moldable construction of inorganic materials,hard tissue regeneration,and high-performance biomimetic materials.Moreover,the utilization of inorganic ionic polymerization has also facilitated the production of numerous advanced materials,including novel structures that exceed the current knowledge of materials science.The inorganic ionic polymerization system provides new artificial strategies and methodologies for the controllable synthesis of inorganics,which mimics the biomineralization process,paving the way for the future development of more high-performance materials.

Two-dimensional porous carbon derived from pollen with enlarged interlayer distance enhanced electrocatalytic oxidation of n-valeraldehyde to octane

Electrocatalytic n-valeraldehyde oxidation reaction was an inexpensive and eco-friendly method to control n-valeraldehyde contamination and produce high value-added octane.However,low-cost and readily available electrocatalysts with high current efficiency were urgently needed.Herein,two-dimensional porous carbon derived from pollen with enlarged interlayer distance was built by alkali activation method,applying in electrocatalytic n-valeraldehyde oxidation reaction.The enlarged interlayer distance was verified by X-ray diffraction(XRD)and high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscope(HAADF-STEM).Electrocatalytic experiments consequences showed activated biomass derived carbon possessed a higher electrocatalytic activity and octane selectivity than unactivated catalyst.Systematic tests and in situ infrared experiments demonstrated that enlarged interlayer distance was positively correlated with specific surface area of catalysts,large specific surface area provided abundant absorption sites,facilitated the adsorption for n-valeraldehyde,and further promoted the transformation of n-valeraldehyde to octane.This work also provides a new avenue for creating high-performance electrocatalysts in terms of lattice engineering.

Traveling Fronts for a Time-periodic Population Model with Dispersal

In this paper, we study a class of time-periodic population model with dispersal. It is well known that the existence of the periodic traveling fronts has been established. However, the uniqueness and stability of such fronts remain unsolved. In this paper, we first prove the uniqueness of non-critical periodic traveling fronts. Then, we show that all non-critical periodic traveling fronts are exponentially asymptotically stable.

Multiscale modeling of gas-induced fracturing in anisotropic clayey rocks

In the context of repositories for nuclear waste,understanding the behavior of gas migration through clayey rocks with inherent anisotropy is crucial for assessing the safety of geological disposal facilities.The primary mechanism for gas breakthrough is the opening of micro-fractures due to high gas pressure.This occurs at gas pressures lower than the combined strength of the rock and its minimum principal stress under external loading conditions.To investigate the mechanism of microscale mode-I ruptures,it is essential to incorporate a multiscale approach that includes subcritical microcracks in the modeling framework.In this contribution,we derive the model from microstructures that contain periodically distributed microcracks within a porous material.The damage evolution law is coupled with the macroscopic poroelastic system by employing the asymptotic homogenization method and considering the inherent hydro-mechanical(HM)anisotropy at the microscale.The resulting permeability change induced by fracture opening is implicitly integrated into the gas flow equation.Verification examples are presented to validate the developed model step by step.An analysis of local macroscopic response is undertaken to underscore the influence of factors such as strain rate,initial damage,and applied stress,on the gas migration process.Numerical examples of direct tension tests are used to demonstrate the model’s efficacy in describing localized failure characteristics.Finally,the simulation results for preferential gas flow reveal the robustness of the two-scale model in explicitly depicting gas-induced fracturing in anisotropic clayey rocks.The model successfully captures the common behaviors observed in laboratory experiments,such as a sudden drop in gas injection pressure,rapid build-up of downstream gas pressure,and steady-state gas flow following gas breakthrough.
