Drought events influence nutrient canopy exchanges and green leaf partitioning during senescence in a deciduous forest

The inc.ease in the frequency and intensity of drought events expec.ed in the coming decades in Western europe may disturb forest biogeoc.emical cyc.es and c.eate nutrient defic.enc.es in *** possible origin of nutrient defic.ency is the disturbance of the partitioning of the green leaf pool during the leaf senescence period between resorption,foliar leaching and senesced ***,the effects of drought events on this partitioning and the consequences for the maintenance of tree nutrition are poorly *** experiment in a beech forest in Meuse(France)was conduc.ed to assess the effect of drought events on nutrient canopy exchanges and on the partitioning of the green leaf pool during the leaf senescence *** aim was to identify potential nutritional consequences of droughts for *** nutrient dynamics,including resorption,c.emistry of green and senesced leaves,foliar absorption and leaching in mature beech stands from 2012 to 2019 allowed us to compare the nutrient exchanges for three nondry and three dry years(i.e.,with an intense drought event during the growing season).During dry years,we observed a dec.ease by almost a third of the potassium(K)partitioning to resorption(*** effic.ency),thus reducing the K reserve in trees for the next growing *** result suggests that with the inc.eased drought frequency and intensity expec.ed for the coming decades,there will be a risk of potassium defic.ency in trees,as already observed in a rainfall exclusion experiment on the same study *** foliar leaching and higher parititioning to the senesced leaves for K and phosphorus(P)were also *** addition,a slight inc.ease in nitrogen(N)resorption effic.ency occurred during dry years which is more likely to improve tree *** calcium(ca)negative resorption dec.eased,with no apparent consequence in our study *** results show that nutrient exchanges in the canopy and the partitioning of the green leaf

Data gaps and biases are two important issues that affect the quality of biodiversity information and downstream *** how best to fill existing gaps and account for biases is necessary to improve our current information most *** current main approac.es for obtaining and improving data include(1)curation of biological collections,and(2)***,the comparative effectiveness of these approac.es in improving biodiversity data remains little *** used the Flora de Bogota project to study the magnitude of change in spec.es richness,spatial coverage,and sample coverage of plant records based on curation versus *** process of curation resulted in a dec.ease in spec.es richness(synonym and error removal),but it significantly inc.eased the number of records per *** contributed to a slight inc.ease in spec.es richness,via accumulation of new ***,curation led to inc.eases in spatial coverage,spec.es observed by locality,the number of plant records by spec.es,and localities by spec.es compared to ***,curationwas more effic.ent in producing new information compared to fieldwork,mainly because of the large number of records available in *** recommend intensive curatorial work as the first step in inc.easing biodiversity data quality and quantity,to identify bias and gaps at the regional scale that can then be targeted with *** stepwise strategy would enable fieldwork to be planned more costeffectively given the limited resources for biodiversity exploration and charac.erization.

The thermoluminescence(TL)emission of synthetic and natural ce-monazites was charac.erized here to determine the potential application in the identification of microscopic defects from a qualitative point of view trying to link each TL peak to a c.emical-physical *** kinetic parameters that lead the luminescence processes were calculated by means of variable heating rate and computing glow curve deconvolution methods and allow identifying three groups of components at~90,130 and 290℃(for the mineral sample)and~90,170,220,270 and 320℃(for the synthetic cePO_(4):Nd_(0.20),La_(0.25)).The main differences appreciated in these complex TL curves are mainly due to(i)the content of impurities(natural sample contains lanthanides as well as U 0.60%and Th 5.22%)and(ii)the degree of crystallinity of the samples which is directly related to the type of impurities(synthetic monazite relies only on Nd and La).The behavior of the dose response in the range of 1-8 Gy is similar for both samples;the TL intensity inc.eases linearly as the dose inc.eases without changes in the position of the maxima,denoting first-order kinetic luminescence *** peak could be mostly associated with structural defects(i.e.,phase transitions),c.emical reactions(i.e.,ce3+?ce4+redox reaction,dehydration or dehydroxylation processes)or intrinsic defects(i.e.,Frenkel defects,ODcs or NBOHcs).

Dynamic convergent shock compression initiated by return current in high-intensity laser-solid interactions

We investigate the dynamics of convergent shock compression in solid cylindrical targets irradiated by an ultrafast relativistic laser *** partic.e-in-cell simulations and coupled hydrodynamic simulations reveal that the compression process is initiated by both magnetic pressure and surface ablation associated with a strong transient surface return current with density of the order of 10^(17) A/m^(2) and lifetime of 100 *** results show that the dominant compression mechanism is governed by the plasma β,i.e.,the ratio of thermal pressure to magnetic *** targets with small radius and low atomic number Z,the magnetic pressure is the dominant shock compression *** to a scaling law,as the target radius and Z inc.ease,the surface ablation pressure becomes the main mechanism generating convergent ***,an indirect experimental indication of shoc.ed hydrogen compression is provided by optical shadowgraphy measurements of the evolution of the plasma expansion *** results presented here provide a novel basis for the generation of extremely high pressures exc.eding Gbar(100 TPa)to enable the investigation of high-pressure physics using femtosecond J-level laser pulses,offering an alternative to nanosecond kJ-laser pulse-driven and pulsed power Z-pinch compression methods.

catalytic transfer hydrogenation(cTH)is a green and effic.ent pathway for selective hydrogenation of unsaturated aldehydes and ***,managing the abilities of solid catalysts to adsorb substrates and to convert them into desired products is a challenging ***,we report the synthesis of carbon coated LaFe_(0.92)Pd_(0.08)O_(3) composites(LFPO-8@c)for cTH of benzaldehyde(BzH)into benzyl alcohol(BzOH),using isopropanol(IPA)as hydrogen *** coating with carbon improves the ability to adsorb/transfer reactants from solution to active sites,and the doping of Pd2+at Fe3+site strengthens the ability of LaFeO_(3) to convert BzH into BzOH.A balanced point between them(i.e.,abilities to adsorb BzH and to convert BzH into BzOH)is obtained at LFPO-8@c,which exhibits a BzOH formation rate of 3.88 mmol·gcat^(-1)·h^(-1) at 180℃ for 3 h,which is 1.50 and 2.72 times faster than those of LFPO-8 and LaFeO_(3)@c.A reaction mechanism is proposed,in which the acidic sites(e.g.,Fe^(4+),oxygen vacancy)are used for the activation of c=O bond of BzH and O-H bond of IPA,and the basic sites(e.g.,lattice oxygen)for the activation ofα-H(O-H)bond of IPA.
