The Red-footed Falcon(Falco vespertinus)is a species of high international conservation *** analyzed its hunting behavior at the two largest colonies in Italy during the nestling *** accurate data-loggers,we tracked three adult Red-footed Falcons in June and July,2019 and collected 4703 GPS *** detected clear patterns of hovering and perching activity(HPA)in both time and *** occupied one-third of the Red-footed Falcons’day,and showed two peaks just after sunrise(between 35 and 40%of the monitoring time)and just before sunset(50‒60%)in both June and July,and minimum(20‒30%)at night and during the hottest time interval(10:00 a.m.‒4:00 p.m.).Almost 40%of HPA occurred within 50 m from *** findings,although preliminary,have important implications for the conservation of these two colonies that are located within two natura 2000 *** detected spatio-temporal patterns of Red-footed Falcons’hunting behavior suggests the creation of two nested protection belts:the inner one is a narrow belt(up to 50 m from the two rows of trees that host the two colonies)with integral conservation,and hopefully increase the alfalfa crops and fallow land,and the outer belt(50 m‒2 km)with optimized agricultural activities.

Background:There is increasing interest in evaluating home-range overlap(or,otherwise,segregation)between bird species,and between or within bird populations,to inform spatial *** far,studies of home-range overlap typically make use of comparisons between pairs of individuals,populations or species,and return a matrix of pairwise overlaps(e.g.,percent overlaps).However,when the number of individuals,populations or species to be compared is elevated,an overlarge overlap matrix is difficult to interpret from an ecological ***:We propose here a new,conceptually simple and computationally efficient index(general overlap index;GOI)for the ready computation within GIS of home range overlap of an arbitrarily large number(i.e.,n≥2)of individuals,populations or *** the number of home ranges to be compared,GOI always returns a single score between 0 and *** a case study,we applied our index to 24,074 GPS points of 10 Lesser Kestrels(Falco naumanni)in order to estimate within-colony and between-colony overlaps in two neighboring colonies in Southern ***:Within-colony overlap was elevated for both colonies(96.41%at Cassano delle Murge,n=5 individuals;81.38%at Santeramo in Colle,n=5 individuals),while between-colony overlap was low(19.12%;n=2 colonies)and,after a randomization procedure,more spatially-segregated than expected by ***:Modern biotelemetry offers huge amounts of data describing the space use of animal *** use of intuitive and straightforward indices,like GOI,can be useful to promptly extract ecological information from such an amount of data(*** change in space use over successive years,evaluating the reliability of various home-range estimators).

Background： So far, studies of avian space use are mostly realized in 2D, with the vertical dimension ignored. We propose here a new, relatively simple and computationally reasonable method for the estimation of volumetric （i.e. 3D） avian home ***： Through accurate GPS data-loggers, we collected 25,405 GPS points on Lesser Kestrels＇（Fdlco noumonni） space use during the nestling period in one main colony in *** applied our 3D home range estimator to the whole GPS dataset, and also separately to diurnal and nocturnal GPS ***： The 3D colony home range resulted equal to 28.12 km3. By considering daytime and night-time separately, the volumetric home ranges resulted considerably ***： Our 3D home range estimator, because of its intuitive and straightforward properties, can easily capi-talize on the datasets offered by modern biotelemetry （data-loggers, light detection and LIDAR sensors） and enhance conservation strategies for mitigating anthropogenic impacts on bird species. Its applications embrace, but are not limited to, more accurate estimates of collision risk with power lines, aircrafts and wind farms, and increased knowledge of birds＇space requirements in order to persist in their distribution areas.

Background: Inland wetlands are crucial for biodiversity conservation, especially in highly-urbanized landscapes. In the European Union, many wetlands are included in the EU ‘natura 2000’ network, the main tool for biodiversity conservation over the continent, which requires the development of site-specific management plans. Clear and feasible recommendations are necessary to provide site managers with effective tools for the maintenance of biodiversity in these unstable environments. Birds are excellent umbrella species, therefore a management targeted at increasing habitat suitability for focal bird species would likely benefit broader wetland biological communities. Methods: During spring–summer 2017, we collected presence/absence data for 10 bird species of conservation interest at a site scale for 21 natura 2000 sites. We also carried out a point count survey to detect presence/absence of four reedbed-dwelling species at 75 points. At the site level, we estimated landscape characteristics from regional GISlayers, whereas fine-scaled habitat composition was recorded on the field within a 100 m-buffer around the 75 points. We analysed the effect of the extent of different habitats on species’ occurrence probability by means of multi-species binomial multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS) at both scales. We also run species-specific MARS models to compare their performance with those of multi-species models. Results: At the site scale, the extent of the reedbeds/mires was positively associated with the occurrence of all species of conservation concern. At the point-count scale, reedbed extent positively predicted species’ occurrence, but only in presence of patches of clear shallow water. Species-specific MARS models showed qualitatively similar results for some species, but generally were outperformed by multi-species ones. In the Universidad nacional de Colombia, Sede Medellin, the Lasers and Spectroscopy Group （GLEO） has been designed and manufactured a tropospheric lidar station based on a pulsed Nd：YAG laser operating at 532-nm wavelength. The main scientific objective has been to evaluate the vertical structure of the Planetary Boundary Layer （PBL） in urban sites of Medellin-Colombia, South America, （Longitude 75°34′05″ West, Latitude 6°13′55″ North）, using suspended aerosols as tracers of the atmospheric motion. This paper reports the design, manufactures and performance of an elastic lidar system, which was operated under varying air pollution and meteorological conditions and the observations presented here were performed in early 2010, over the metropolitan area of Medellin, city included in the Andean region of Colombia.

Seed size and composition are important traits in food crops and can be affected by nutrient availability in the soil. Phosphorus （P） is a non-renewable, essential macronutrient, and P deficiency limits soybean （G1ycine max） yield and quality. To investigate the associations of seed traits in low- and high-P environ- ments, soybean recombinant inbred lines （RILs） from a cross of cultivars Fiskeby III and Mandarin （Ottawa） were grown under contrasting P availability environments. Traits including individual seed weight, seed number, and intact mature pod weight were significantly affected by soil P levels and showed transgressive segregation among the RILs. Surprisingly, P treatments did not affect seed composition or weight, suggesting that soybeanmaintains sufficient P in seeds even in Iow-P soil. Quantitative trait loci （QTLs） were detected for seed weight, intact pods, seed volume, and seed protein, with five significant QTLs identified in Iow-P environments and one significant QTL found in the optimaI-P environment. Broad-sense heritability estimates were 0.78 （individual seed weight）, *** （seed protein）, 0.34 （seed oil）, and 0.98 （seed number）. The QTLs identified under low P point to genetic regions that may be useful to improve soybean performance under limiting P conditions.

Improving Scientific Research Methodology in Undergraduate Medical Students: a case of team based training blended in a research project

An educational intervention targeting medical students and aiming to develop skills useful to the writing of a health science research protocol over a short period of time has been developed in the Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine. The methodology blending the principles of PBL and TBL is detailed and key issues of this implementation are discussed. Twenty-one students were enrolled in a research master degree and participated to three mandatory 180-minutes sessions. Beyond classical skills useful to solve a problem, this new intervention focused on the transformation of knowledge to create an authentic content, which is a feature of the project-based learning(PBL). The training process was designed according to team-based learning(TBL) procedure except that work sharing between groups and pooling resources and outcomes of each group allowed the construction of one final class original research project in the field of respiratory pharmacology. The combination of both learning methods allowed promoting individual and group accountability necessary to improve self-learning and the quality of the final joint project. The peer reviewing was an essential factor in creating the students' motivation and improving of team discussion. The grades individually assigned for skills and quality of the project by an external teacher suggested that key objectives of the intervention were reached. In conclusion, the educational intervention described in this paper appears as an appropriate method to develop specific skills necessary to write and discuss a research project within a research *** works are necessary to measure the degree of satisfaction of students and improvement of performance.

本研究利用4种父本育性较强的二倍体香蕉(Musa spp.)种质,比较不同染色法和离体萌发法检测香蕉花粉活力的效果,以期筛选适合香蕉花粉活力快速检测的方法。结果显示:醋酸洋红和I-KI染色法处理后的香蕉花粉形态较模糊,而TTC法与MTT法的染色效果较好,花粉形态较清晰,容易区分染色与未染色的花粉;适合香蕉花粉离体萌发的培养基中,蔗糖浓度为15%,pH值为5.8;MTT染色法结果与离体萌发法结果相关性最好,说明MTT染色法的结果较其他染色法准确、可靠。利用MTT染色法,本研究比较了17份二倍体香蕉种质的花粉活力,结果显示:‘Calcutta 4’(*** ***(AA))、BGY3(***(BB))、Malaccensis(*** ***(AA))、Balbisiana(***(BB))等4份野生类型种质,以及双单倍体种质‘CIRAD 930’(*** *** *** Pahang(AA))的染色率超过50%,而3份改良二倍体种质和4份栽培类型种质的染色率低于30%。
