Effect of Combinations of Sucrose and Cryoprotectants on the Survival of Catfish Embryos （Pangasidae hypophthamus）

Although cryopreservation of embryos has been used in most terrestrial animals, the application of this technique has not been succeeded for aquatic animals. In this study, the authors investigate the effect of different combinations of sucrose （SUC, C12H22OH） and cryoprotectants （CPAs） on the survival of the catfish embryos （Pangasidae hypophthalmus） at low temperatures （4, 0 and -20 ℃） for short-term storage. For this aim, embryos with somites and optic cups were exposed to different combinations of sucrose with methanol （SUC ＋ MeOH）, 1.2-propylene glycol （SUC ＋ PROH） and ethylene glycol （SUC ＋ EG） at four concentrations ratios：（1） 0.5 M SUC ＋ 0.5 M CPA; （2） 1 M SUC ＋ 0.5 M CPA; （3） 0.5 M SUC ＋ 1 M CPA; （4） 1 M SUC ＋ 1 M CPA for 40 min at 4, 0 and -20 ℃. Embryos kept in water at room temperature （RT）, 4, 0 and -20℃ were used as controls. The survival rate was expressed as a percentage of hatched embryos per total embryos treated. The results showed that the hatching rate declined significantly when embryos were stored in water at 0 ℃ and -20℃. For embryos at 0 ℃ storage, the highest survival rate （87.78%） was obtained with 1 M SUC ＋ 1 M MeOH combination while at -20 ℃, only embryos in the combined treatments of 0.5 M SUC ＋ 1 MEG and 0.5 M SUC ＋ 1 M PROH reached the hatching stage （40% and 83.33%, respectively）. In conclusion, the results showed that the catfish embryos are sensitive to sub-zero temperatures and the combined treatment of 0.5 M sucrose and 1 M propylene glycol can be used to protect catfish embryos from damages caused by low temperature （0 ℃ and -20 ℃）.

Polygonatum kingianum rhizome extract alleviates collagen antibody-induced arthritis by modulating proinflammatory cytokine production in mice

Objective: To evaluate the anti-arthritic effects of Polygonatum kingianum rhizome extract using both in vitro and in vivo ***: Lipopolysaccharide-induced RAW 264.7 macrophages were treated with an ethanol extract of Polygonatum kingianum rhizomes at different concentrations to determine nitric oxide and prostaglandin E2(PGE2) production. For in vivo study, Polygonatum kingianum ethanol extract was further investigated for its antiinflammatory effect in a mouse model with collagen antibodyinduced arthritis. Phytochemical study of Polygonatum kingianum ethanol extract was also ***: Saponins(142 mg/g total yield) was the main component in the Polygonatum kingianum ethanol extract. 5α,8α-ergosterol peroxide,(E,E)-9-oxooctadeca-10,12-dienoic acid and 3-(2?-hydroxy-4?-methoxy-benzyl)-5,7-dihydroxy-8-methyl-chroman-4-one were isolated from the extract. Polygonatum kingianum ethanol extract exhibited potential anti-inflammatory effects by inhibiting nitric oxide and PGE2 production in RAW 264.7 cells in a dosedependent manner. The level of arthritis in mice with collagen antibody-induced arthritis was significantly reduced(Phanol extract, particularly at a dose of 1 000 mg/kg body weight. Besides, the extract demonstrated the regulatory effects on serum tumor necrosis factoralpha, interleukin-6, and interleukin-10 in treated ***: Polygonatum kingianum ethanol extract has beneficial effects on inflammatory cytokine regulation and PGE2 inhibition in an experimental mouse model with collagen antibody-induced arthritis. The phytochemical screening reveals that the saponin, as the main component, and sterols(daucosterol and 5α,8α-ergosterol peroxide) from Polygonatum kingianum ethanol extract may contribute to its promising in vitro and in vivo anti-inflammatory activities.

Objective:To assess the influences of the knowledge of parents about hepatitis B virus(HBV)infection and the benefit of HBV vaccination on the practice of HBV vaccination among ***:A prospective cross-sectional study recruited parents whose children,aged 12-24 months,received HBV vaccination at Commune Health Centers(CHCs)in Ho Chi Minh City from Feb.2016 to *** were interviewed using a questionnaire that included 11-item binary knowledge questions and checked their children’s vaccination ***:A total of 768 parents had a mean age of(30.8±5.1)*** mean knowledge score of the 11-item questions was(7.0±2.4).The knowledge score was positively associated with full and timely HBV *** addition,children who received complete and timely HBV vaccination were significantly more likely to live in rural areas(Adjusted OR 4.02,95%CI 2.79-5.79,Phad knowledge about HBV risk,had a higher rate of full and timely HBV vaccination(Adjusted OR 1.60,95%CI 1.13-2.29,and Adjusted OR 1.47,95%CI 1.01-2.13,P all<0.05).Conclusions:Parents possessed a great deal of incorrect knowledge about *** health education from health care providers should target parents living in specific locations and focus on the benefits of HBV vaccine.

Infectious keratitis in Vietnam:etiology,organisms,and management at Vietnam National Eye Hospital

AIM:To report the etiologies,risk factors,treatments,and outcomes of infectious keratitis(IK)at a major Vietnamese eye ***:this is a retrospective review of all cases of IK at Vietnam National Eye Hospital(VNEH)in hanoi,*** histories,demographics,clinical features,microbiological results,and treatment outcomes were ***:IK was diagnosed in 1974 eyes of 1952 patients,with ocular trauma being the greatest risk factor for IK(34.2%),frequently resulting from an agriculturerelated injur y(53.3%).The mean duration between symptom onset and presentation to VNEH was 19.3±14.4 d,and 98.7%of patients had been treated with topical antibiotic and/or antifungal agents prior to evaluation at *** on smear results of 1706 samples,the most common organisms identified were bacteria(n=1107,64.9%)and fungi(n=1092,64.0%),with identification of both bacteria and fungi in 614(36.0%)***-five of 374 bacterial cultures(14.7%)and 426 of 838 fungal cultures(50.8%)were positive,with the most commonly cultured pathogens being Pseudomonas aeruginosa,Streptococcus pneumonia,Fusarium spp.,and Aspergillus *** perforation and descemetocele developed in 391(19.8%)and 93(4.7%)eyes,*** treatment was successful in resolving IK in 50.4%eyes,while 337(17.1%)eyes underwent penetrating or anterior lamellar *** was performed in 7.1%of eyes,most commonly in the setting of fungal ***:Ocular trauma is a major risk factor for IK in Vietnam,which is diagnosed in almost 400 patients each year at *** this,and as approximately one quarter of the eyes that develop IK require corneal transplantation or evisceration,greater emphasis should be placed on the development of prevention and treatment programs for IK in Vietnam.

The effects of low energy X-ray irradiation on microbial inactivation,sprouting inhibition and genetic variation were *** was an inverse correlation between the exposure dose in range of 0 Gy–5000 Gy and the survival rate of *** dose of 1000 Gy seemed to be suitable for inactivation of microorganisms because the respective survival rate is relatively low (0.59%).Dose rate of 13.87 Gy/min was the most appropriate to inactivate the microorganisms,with the survival rate of 0.37%.Applying the irradiation dose of 1000 Gy and dose rate of 13.87 Gy/min,there was a significant sprouting inhibition of irradiated potatoes compared to the control for six months *** effect of irradiation dose (100–1200 Gy) and dose rate (8.63–19.62 Gy/min) on genetic variation of the irradiated samples was assessed by DNA fingerprints induced from using three molecular techniques including Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD),Start Codon Targeted Polymorphism (SCoT) and CAAT box – derived polymorphism (CBDP).At the irradiation dose of 1000 Gy and dose rate of 13.87 Gy/min,the level of genetic variation was relatively low (4.85%).Thus,this treatment is a suitable condition of irradiation for potato treatment with the purpose of preservation.

Propulsion Modeling and Analysis of a Biomimetic Swimmer

We have studied a biomimetic swimmer based on the motion of bacteria such as Escherichia coli (E. coli) theoretically andexperimentally. The swimmer has an ellipsoidal cell body propelled by a helical filament. The performance of this swimmer wasestimated by modeling the dynamics of a swimmer in viscous fluid. We applied the Resistive Force Theory (RFT) on this modelto calculate the linear swimming speed and the efficiency of the model. A parametric study on linear velocity and efficiency tooptimize the design of this swimmer was demonstrated. In order to validate the theoretical results, a biomimetic swimmer wasfabricated and an experiment setup was prepared to measure the swimming speed and thrust force in silicone oil. The experimentalresults agree well with the theoretical values predicted by RFT. In addition, we studied the flow patterns surrounding thefilament with a finite element simulation with different Reynolds number (Re) to understand the mechanism of propulsion. Thesimulation results provide information on the nature of flow patterns generated by swimming filament. Furthermore, the thrustforces from the simulation were compared with the thrust forces from theory. The simulation results are in good agreement withthe theoretical results.

Contributions of Rotation,Expansion and Line Broadening to the Morphology and Kinematics of the Inner CSE of Oxygen-rich AGB Star R Hya

We use archival ALMA observations of the CO(2-1)and SiO(5-4)molecular line emissions of AGB star R Hya to illustrate the relative contributions of rotation,expansion and line broadening to the morphology and kinematics of the circumstellar envelope(CSE)within some~70 au(~0."5)from the centre of the *** give evidence for rotation and important line broadening to dominate the inner region,within~14 au(~100 mas)from the centre of the *** former is about an axis that projects a few degrees west of north and has a projected rotation velocity of a few km s^(-1).The latter occurs within some 7-14 au(50-100 mas)from the centre of the star,with the line width reaching two to three times its value outside this *** suggest that it is caused by shocks induced by stellar pulsations and convective cell *** show the importance of properly accounting for the observed line broadening when discussing rotation and evaluating the radial dependence of the rotation velocity.

this study assessed the quality and biological activity of Vietnamese single-bulb black garlic(SBG)by investigating the effect of different temperatures(60,65,70,and 75℃)on physicochemical properties during the heat treatment *** optimal treating conditions accounted for the highest concentration of antioxidants were 70℃for 42 *** SBG.70 had a higher content of reducing sugar,protein,flavonoid,and polyphenol in comparison with the white garlic and the *** activity of single-bulb white garlic and SBG were measured via DPPH,phosphomolybdenum,and H2O2 radicals,as well as a reduction *** antimicrobial activity was assessed by the multi-concentration dilution method;the sample treated at 70℃displayed the strongest activity against four microbial strains with MIC values for ***,***,***,and *** of 64,128,128,and 64μg/mL,***,only two SBG samples aged at 70℃and 75℃were bacteriostatic to *** with MIC values of 32 and 64μg/mL,respectively.

Investigation of Punch Resistance of the Allomyrira dichtoloma Beetle Forewing

In this study, the punch resistance of the beetle forewing was investigated to address the ability of the forewing against the external force. The punch resistance of the forewing was measured for different sizes and sexes of beetles using a conventional testing method in conjunction with the Digital Image Correlation （DIC） technique. The results showed that the maximum fracture load was measured around 23 N for the female beetle and around 20.2 N for the male beetle in the front-side punch test. Moreover, the fracture load in the front-side punch test was higher than that in the back-side punch test for both male and female beetles. this means that the beetle forewing plays a protection role against external loads. Furthermore, the puncture energy in the front-side punch test for the female beetle （6.91 m J） was a little higher than that for the male beetle （5.27 mJ）. In addition, the DIC results revealed that the first crack occurred along the trachea line and the second crack then appeared in the direction that was perpendicular to the direction of the first crack. this study provides a com- prehensive understanding of the mechanical protection properties of the beetle forewing and offers a good lesson for studying lightweight bio-inspired composite material.
