Exploring the mechanisms of calcium carbonate deposition on various substrates with implications for effective anti-scaling material selection

The unexpected scaling phenomena have resulted in significant damages to the oil and gas industries,leading to issues such as heat exchanger failures and pipeline clogging. It is of practical and fundamental importance to understand the scaling mechanisms and develop efficient anti-scaling strategies. However,the underlying surface interaction mechanisms of scalants(e.g., calcite) with various substrates are still not fully understood. In this work, the colloidal probe atomic force microscopy(AFM) technique has been applied to directly quantify the surface forces between calcite particles and different metallic substrates,including carbon steel(CR1018), low alloy steel(4140), stainless steel(SS304) and tungsten carbide,under different water chemistries(i.e., salinity and p H). Measured force profiles revealed that the attractive van der Waals(VDW) interaction contributed to the attachment of the calcium carbonate particles on substrate surfaces, while the repulsive electric double layer(EDL) interactions could inhibit the attachment behaviors. High salinity and acidic p H conditions of aqueous solutions could weaken the EDL repulsion and promote the attachment behavior. The adhesion of calcite particles with CR1018 and4140 substrates was much stronger than that with SS304 and tungsten carbide substrates. The bulk scaling tests in aqueous solutions from an industrial oil production process showed that much more severe scaling behaviors of calcite was detected on CR1018 and 4140 than those on SS304 and tungsten carbide, which agreed with surface force measurement results. Besides, high salinity and acidic p H can significantly enhance the scaling phenomena. This work provides fundamental insights into the scaling mechanisms of calcite at the nanoscale with practical implications for the selection of suitable antiscaling materials in petroleum industries.

Modifying Lyapunov exponent of chaotic map by self-cascading

The self-cascade(SC) method is an effective technique for chaos enhancement and complexity increasing in chaos ***, the controllable self-cascade(CSC) method allows for more accurate control of Lyapunov exponents of the discrete map. In this work, the SC and CSC systems of the original map are derived, which enhance the chaotic performance while preserving the fundamental dynamical characteristics of the original map. Higher Lyapunov exponent of chaotic sequences corresponding to higher frequency are obtained in SC and CSC systems. Meanwhile, the Lyapunov exponent could be linearly controlled with greater flexibility in the CSC system. The verification of the numerical simulation and theoretical analysis is carried out based on the platform of CH32.

A fuse-based DC circuit breaker with vacuum interrupter enhanced by an external transverse magnetic field

Due to the increasing power system capacity, the interruption of large fault currents has gradually become a major challenge in power systems. At the moment, such currents are interrupted mainly via circuit breakers based on the method of active current commutation. However, these types of circuit breakers tend to be costly and oversized. One possible alternative-a fuse-based circuit breaker with current commutation process enhanced by an external transverse magnetic field (ETMF)-is proposed by the authors. Its main advantage lies in the fast current commutation achieved by an ETMF-enhanced three-stage increase of the vacuum arc voltage. The study of the current commutation process is mainly represented by the authors, and the influencing factors of the current commutation-contact opening speed and ETMF current-are discussed. At last, the proposed circuit breaker is verified by an experiment, whose results show that a short-circuit current of 42 kA can be interrupted within just 2 ms.

Effect of rare earth on primary carbides in H13 die steel and their addition method:a review

The choice of a type of combustion technology to be used for heat or power generation depends on economic,technical,operational and fuel availability *** benefits associated with the evolving market driven by the fluidised bed combustion(FBC)technology cannot be overlooked especially when gauged at 65 gWth of worldwide installed capacity alongside added benefits of handling fuel variation,low pollutant emissions and high combustion *** or biomass waste will continue to have a vital role to play in the future FBC technology-based power *** often contains high levels of inorganic species that can form sticky agglomerates posing a significant risk to boiler operation resulting in unscheduled *** added complexity of the behaviour of the fuel and bed material mix highlights the requirement for simulation models to identify agglomeration to help improve the overall performance and reliability of FBC *** resolve this problem,this research devised a simulation strategy for the detection of agglomeration using the Eulerian–Eulerian *** developed modelling strategy is validated with the experimental data available in literature for two-dimensional simplified geometry of a pilot-scale fluidised bed *** model results were found promising and robust to predict bed defluidisation times and other parameters consistent with the experimental data.

Could the EU carbon border adjustment mechanism promote climate mitigation?An economy-wide analysis

Due to concerns about carbon leakage and sectoral competitiveness,the European Union(EU)proposed implementing the carbon border adjustment mechanism(CBAM).The effectiveness and potential negative consequences of CBAM have aroused extensive *** the perspective of the economy-wide analysis,this study uses a global computable general equilibrium model to explore the rationality of CBAM from the aspects of socioeconomic impact and the effects of promoting climate ***,the potential alternative mechanism of CBAM is *** results show that CBAM can reduce the EU's gross domestic product(gDP)loss;however,the gDP loss in all other regions ***,CBAM raises household welfare losses in most regions,including the ***,although CBAM can reduce the marginal abatement cost in eight regions,it comes at the cost of greater economic ***,the economic and household welfare cost of raising emissions reduction targets in regions like the USA and Japan is substantially higher than the impact of passively accepting the CBAM;therefore,CBAM's ability to drive ambitious emission reduction initiatives may be ***,for the potential alternative mechanism,from the perspective of reducing economic cost and household welfare losses,the EU could implement domestic tax cuts in the short-term and promote global unified carbon pricing in the long-term.
