Diabetes affects approximately 10.5%of adults worldwide,and its chronic complications lead to severely disabling sequelae and premature death,thus placing a heavy healthcare burden on both patients affected and society[1].China has experienced a dramatic increase in diabetes prevalence from 0.67%in 1980[2]to 12.8%in 2018[3]and has approximately one-quarter of people with diabetes worldwide[1].It is therefore essential to understand the epidemiologic characteristics of the chronic complications and co-morbidities of diabetes,and the current status of diabetes management to guide planning for appropriate diabetes care and intervention for these complications and co-morbidities at the national level[4-7].

Background:Pre-operative assessment with high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging(MRI)is useful for assessing the risk of local recurrence(LR)and survival in rectal cancer.However,few studies have explored the clinical importance of the morphology of the anterior mesorectum,especially in patients with anterior cancer.Hence,the study aimed to investigate the impact of the morphology of the anterior mesorectum on LR in patients with primary rectal cancer.Methods:A retrospective study was performed on 176 patients who underwent neoadjuvant treatment and curative-intent surgery.Patients were divided into two groups according to the morphology of the anterior mesorectum on sagittal MRI:(1)linear type:the anterior mesorectum was thin and linear;and(2)triangular type:the anterior mesorectum was thick and had a unique triangular shape.Clinicopathological and LR data were compared between patients with linear type anterior mesorectal morphology and patients with triangular type anterior mesorectal morphology.Results:Morphometric analysis showed that 90(51.1%)patients had linear type anterior mesorectal morphology,while 86(48.9%)had triangular type anterior mesorectal morphology.Compared to triangular type anterior mesorectal morphology,linear type anterior mesorectal morphology was more common in females and was associated with a higher risk of circumferential resection margin involvement measured by MRI(35.6%[32/90]vs.16.3%[14/86],P=0.004)and a higher 5-year LR rate(12.2%vs.3.5%,P=0.030).In addition,the combination of linear type anterior mesorectal morphology and anterior tumors was confirmed as an independent risk factor for LR(odds ratio=4.283,P=0.014).Conclusions:The classification established in this study was a simple way to describe morphological characteristics of the anterior mesorectum.The combination of linear type anterior mesorectal morphology and anterior tumors was an independent risk factor for LR and may act as a tool to assist with LR risk stratification and treatment selection.

Metamaterials refer to a class of artificial composite structures with supernormal physical properties that natural materials do not have.The emergence of metamaterials has opened up new research directions for classical electromagnetic theory and made it possible to manipulate electromagnetic waves effectively.One of most important applications of metamaterials is metamaterial absorbers(MMAs).The properties of MMAs depend on the material composition,cell size and structure,which could often achieve"perfect"absorption through reasonable design.This review starts with the development of MMAs and describes the status of this absorber,then mainly focuses on bionic design and new artificial design.Specifically,it is to draw inspiration from natural plants and animals,design novel structures to get better absorbing properties.Furthermore,the artificial design can achieve the optimize absorption capacity as well as absorption bandwidth.What’s more,this review summarizes the 3D printing technology to prepare MMAs that are different from traditional printed circuit board technology.The MMAs produced by 3D printing technology can prepare more complex shapes,and has light weight and better absorbing properties.

Dynamical analysis of submesoscale fronts associated with wind-forced offshore jet in the western South China Sea

This study investigates the submesoscale fronts and their dynamic effects on the mean flow due to frontal instabilities in the wind-driven summer offshore jet of the western South China Sea(WSCS),using satellite observations,a 500 m-resolution numerical simulation,and diagnostic analysis.Both satellite measurements and simulation results show that the submesoscale fronts occupying a typical lateral scale of O(~10)km are characterized with one order of Rossby(Ro)and Richardson(Ri)numbers in the WSCS.This result implies that both geostrophic and ageostrophic motions feature in these submesoscale fronts.The diagnostic results indicate that a net cross-frontal Ekman transport driven by down-front wind forcing effectively advects cold water over warm water.By this way,the weakened local stratification and strong lateral buoyancy gradients are conducive to a negative Ertel potential vorticity(PV)and triggering frontal symmetric instability(SI)at the submesoscale density front.The cross-front ageostrophic secondary circulation caused by frontal instabilities is found to drive an enhanced vertical velocity reaching O(100)m/d.Additionally,the estimate of the down-front wind forcing the Ekman buoyancy flux(EBF)is found to be scaled with the geostrophic shear production(GSP)and buoyancy flux(BFLUX),which are the two primary energy sources for submesoscale turbulence.The large values of GSP and BFLUX at the fronts suggest an efficient downscale energy transfer from larger-scale geostrophic flows to the submesoscale turbulence owing to down-front wind forcing and frontal instabilities.In this content,submesoscale fronts and their instabilities substantially enhance the local vertical exchanges and geostrophic energy cascade towards smaller-scale.These active submesoscale processes associated density fronts and filaments likely provide new physical interpretations for the filamentary high chlorophyll concentration and frontal downscale energy transfer in the WSCS.

Cell instance segmentation is a fundamental task for many biological applications,especially for packed cells in three-dimensional(3D)microscope images that can fully display cellular morphology.Image processing algorithms based on neural networks and feature engineering have enabled great progress in two-dimensional(2D)instance segmentation.However,current methods cannot achieve high segmentation accuracy for irregular cells in 3D images.In this study,we introduce a universal,morphology-based 3D instance segmentation algorithm called Crop Once Merge Twice(C1M2),which can segment cells from a wide range of image types and does not require nucleus images.C1M2 can be extended to quantify the fluorescence intensity of fluorescent proteins and antibodies and automatically annotate their expression levels in individual cells.Our results suggest that C1M2 can serve as a tissue cytometry for 3D histopathological assays by quantifying fluorescence intensity with spatial localization and morphological information.

An optimization method is introduced to design the aerodynamic parameters of a dual-spin twodimensional guided projectile with the canards for trajectory correction. The nose guidance component contains two pairs of canards which can provide lift and despin with the projectile for stability. The optimal design algorithm is developed to decide the profiles both of the steering and spinning canards,and their deflection angles are also simulated to meet the needs of trajectory correction capabilities.Finally, the aerodynamic efficiency of the specific canards is discussed according to the CFD simulations.Results that obtained here can be further applied to the exterior ballistics design.

To reduce electromagnetic(EM)wave interference pollution,in this work,carbon fibers@Co-ZIFs derivations(CFZD)as an advanced EM wave absorbing material was successfully prepared.The yolk-shell structure of the magnetic metal particles generated a large amount of contact area,facilitating the interface polarization and relaxation.As a result,the optimized sample delivers a maximum reflection loss(RL)value of-19.2 d B with a bandwidth of 2.6 GHz at a small thickness of 1.3 mm.Additionally,ANSYS Electronics Desktop 2018(HFSS)was used to simulate the radar cross section(RCS)reduction in practical application based on these composites.The RCS values of composite coatings are less than-10 d B m^(2) at the range of-90°

Cancer is one of the most devastating diseases worldwide and definitive therapeutics for treating cancer are not yet available despite extensive research efforts. The key challenges include limiting factors connected with traditional chemotherapeutics, primarily drug resistance, low response rates, and adverse side-effects. Therefore, there is a high demand for novel anti-cancer drugs that are both potent and safe for cancer prevention and treatment. Gallic acid(GA), a natural botanic phenolic compound, can mediate various therapeutic properties that are involved in anti-inflammation, anti-obesity, and anti-cancer activities. More recently, GA has been shown to exert anti-cancer activities via several biological pathways that include migration, metastasis, apoptosis, cell cycle arrest, angiogenesis, and oncogene expression. This review discusses two aspects, one is the anti-cancer potential of GA against different types of cancer and the underlying molecular mechanisms, the other is the bibliometric analysis of GA in cancer and tumor research. The results indicated that lung cancer, prostate cancer, stomach cancer, and colon adenocarcinoma may become a hot topic in further research. Overall, this review provides evidence that GA represents a promising novel, potent, and safe anti-cancer drug candidate for treating cancer.

Hole-growth phenomenon during pyrolysis of a cation-exchange resin particle

A novel central hole-expansion phenomenon is identified, in which the cation-exchange resin is pyrolyzed in a mixed atmosphere of nitrogen and oxygen at 400–500 ℃. In this reaction, the reaction path is predictable and always starts from the center of the resin particle to form a central hole, then continues and expands around the hole, finally forming a uniformly distributed hole group;the particle surface remains intact. Analysis shows that this formation mode is due to the different reaction paths of sulfonic groups between the surface and interior of the particle, caused by the temperature difference. On the surface, transformation reactions happen at high temperatures(410–500 ℃) to form stable organic sulfur structures, while decomposition occurs inside the particle at a relatively low temperature(<410 ℃) and promotes complete pyrolysis of the copolymer matrix to form holes.
