Establishment and validation of health vulnerability and adaptation indices under extreme weather events on the basis of the 2016 flood in Anhui province,China

Climate change could intensify extreme weather events,such as flooding,which amplifies the public health threat of waterborne diseases.Thus,assessing health vulnerability and adaptation(V&A)could facilitate nationally effective responses to extreme climate events.However,related studies are still negligible,and the assessment urgently needs to be validated with actual health data after extreme weather events.We established health V&A indices through literature review and factor analyses.Then,we separately mapped the spatial distribution of flood exposure,social and public health sensitivity,and adaptive capacity before the 2016 flood in Anhui province and compared it with post-flood diarrhea risks by using the geographic information system method to assess health vulnerability.Finally,we validated the indices by exploring the relationship between health V&A indices and post-flood diarrhea risks by using the quantile regression model.Results revealed that health V&A can be framed and categorized as key components of exposure,sensitivity,and adaptive capacity.The remarkable differences in the spatial distribution of health vulnerability were generally consistent with the demographic sensitivity,geographic flooding exposure,and post-flood diarrhea risks in Anhui.In addition,health V&A indices exerted significant positive impacts on infectious diarrhea post-flooding at all quantiles and were significant across different percentiles.Moreover,the impacts of flood exposure on total infectious diarrhea were high and continuous,whereas the impacts of sensitivity were not obvious in the flood's early stage(Coeff=0.643;p<0.001)but high in the flood's middle(Coeff=0.997;p<0.001)and late stages(Coeff=0.975;p<0.001).However,the impacts of adaptive capacity were heterogeneous and high in the flood's early stage(Coeff=0.665;p<0.001 at the 25th percentile)and late stage(Coeff=1.296;p<0.001 at the 75th percentile)but were insignificant at the 50th percentile.This study contributed validated three-layered health V&A indices with 30

Impact of Temperature on Mortality in Three Major Chinese Cities

Objective To study the relation between temperature and mortality by estimating the temperature-related mortality in Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou. Methods Data of daily mortality, weather and air pollution in the three cities were collected. A distributed lag nonlinear model was established and used in analyzing the effects of temperature on mortality. Current and future net temperature-related mortality was estimated. Results The association between temperature and mortality was J-shaped, with an increased death risk of both hot and cold temperature in these cities. The effects of cold temperature on health lasted longer than those of hot temperature. The projected temperature-related mortality increased with the decreased cold-related mortality. The mortality was higher in Guangzhou than in Beijing and Shanghai. Conclusion The impact of temperature on health varies in the 3 cities of China, which may have implications for climate policy making in China.

The Paris Agreement has prompted much interest in the societal and health impacts of limiting global warming to 1.5 ℃ and 2 ℃. Previous assessments of differential impacts of two targets indicate that 1.5 ℃ warming target would substantially reduce the impact on human health compared to 2 ℃, but they mainly focused on the magnitude of temperature changes under future climate change scenarios without any consideration of greater frequency of cumulative heat exposures within a day. Here we quantified the health risks of compound daytime and nighttime hot extremes using morbidity data in a megacity of China, and also identified the time-period of heat exposure with higher risks. Then we projected future morbidity burden attributable to compound hot extremes due to the half-degree warming. We estimated that the 2 ℃ warming scenario by 2100 as opposed to 1.5 ℃ would increase annual heat-related ambulance dispatches by 31% in Shenzhen city. Substantial additional impacts were associated with occurrence of consecutive hot days and nights, with ambulance dispatches increased by 82%. Our results suggested that compound hot extremes should be considered in assessment of heat-related health impacts, particularly in the context of climate change. Minimizing the warming of climate in a more ambitious target can significantly reduce the health damage.

Objective:This study aims to provide a theoretical foundation for the development and practical application of human immunodeficiency virus(HIV)/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome(AIDS)prevention and control policy systems in China by scrutinizing,analyzing,and synthesizing the evolution of Chinese policies in this domain.Methods:Utilizing grounded theory,we employed NVivo12 software to perform text content analysis,mining,and coding classification,along with visualization techniques,on policy texts sourced from Chinese government platforms,including the official website of China’s State Council.We considered four analytical dimensions—time,subject,type,and object.Results:The National Health Commission and the State Council emerged as the primary entities engaged in policymaking for HIV/AIDS in China.We identified four distinct stages in the evolution of these policies,culminating in a novel‘sun-shaped’HIV/AIDS prevention and control policy network model with an emphasis on‘knowledge,attitude,and practice’at its nucleus,which aligns with national conditions and societal progress.Furthermore,the focal groups of these policies have been dynamically refined and updated over time.Conclusions:Our findings introduce a‘sunshaped’HIV/AIDS prevention and control policy network model specific to China.We observed a conceptual policy shift towards prioritizing overall human health rather than confining the focus to disease treatment.Additionally,in light of China’s growing elderly population,the imperative to address HIV/AIDS prevention and control among older adults is an issue that warrants increased attention.

Rising emissions of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere have warmed the planet substantially and are also accompanied by poor air quality.The increased prevalence of allergic airway disease worldwide can be partially attributed to those global environmental changes.Climate change and air pollution pose adverse impacts on respiratory allergies,and that the mechanisms are complex and interactive.Adverse weather conditions,such as extreme temperatures,can act directly on the respiratory tract to induce allergic respiratory illnesses.Thunderstorms and floods can alter the production and distribution of aeroallergens while wildfires and dust storms increase air pollution,and therefore indirectly enhance health risks.Concentrations of particulate matter and ozone in the air have been projected to increase with climate warming and air stagnation,and the rising temperatures and CO2 increase pollen,molds,and spores,which escalate the risk of allergic respiratory diseases.The synergistic effects of extreme heat and aeroallergens intensify the toxic effect of air pollutants,which in turn augment the allergenicity of aeroallergens.With the Earth’s climate change,migration of humans and plants shift the living environments and allergens of susceptible people.Urban residents are exposed to multiple factors while children are sensitive to environmental exposure.Since climate change may pose many unexpected and persistent effects on allergic respiratory diseases,health professionals should advocate for effective mitigation and adaptation strategies to minimize its respiratory health effects.

The“dual-carbon”strategy promotes the development of the wastewater treatment sector and is an important tool for leading science and technology innovations.Based on the global climate change and the new policies introduced by China,this paper described the new needs for the development of wastewater treatment science and technology.It offered a retrospective analysis of the historical trajectory of scientific and technological advancements in this field.Utilizing bibliometrics,it delineated the research hotspots within wastewater treatment,notably highlighting materials genomics,artificial intelligence,and synthetic biology.Furthermore,it posited that,in the future,the field of wastewater treatment should follow the paths of technological innovations with multi-dimensional needs,such as carbon reduction,pollution reduction,health,standardisation,and intellectualisation.The purpose of this paper was to provide references and suggestions for scientific and technological innovations in the field of wastewater treatment,and to contribute to the common endeavor of moving toward a Pollution-Free Planet.

On the Surface Helium Abundance of B-type Hot Subdwarf Stars from the WD+MS Channel of Type Ia Supernovae

The origin of intermediate helium (He)-rich hot subdwarfs is still unclear.Previous studies have suggested that some surviving Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) companions from the white dwarf+main-sequence (WD+MS)channel may contribute to the intermediate He-rich hot subdwarfs.However,previous studies ignored the impact of atomic diffusion on the post-explosion evolution of surviving companion stars of SNe Ia,leading to the aspect that they could not explain the observed surface He abundance of intermediate He-rich hot subdwarfs.In this work,by taking the atomic diffusion and stellar wind into account,we trace the surviving companions of SNe Ia from the WD+MS channel using the one-dimensional stellar evolution code MESA until they evolve into hot subdwarfs.We find that the surface He-abundances of our surviving companion models during their core He-burning phases are in a range of-1■log(N_(He) N_(H))■0,which are consistent with those observed in intermediate He-rich hot subdwarfs.This seems to further support the notion that it is possible for surviving companions of SNe Ia in the WD+MS channel to form some intermediate He-rich hot subdwarfs.

A Server Placement Algorithm for Reducing Risk and Improving Power Utilization in Data Centers

As the power demand in data centers is increasing,the power capacity of the power supply system has become an essential resource to be optimized.Although many data centers use power oversubscription to make full use of the power capacity,there are unavoidable power supply risks associated with it.Therefore,how to improve the data center power capacity utilization while ensuring power supply security has become an important issue.To solve this problem,we first define it and propose a risk evaluation metric called Weighted Power Supply Risk(WPSRisk).Then,a method,named Hybrid Genetic Algorithm with Ant Colony System(HGAACS),is proposed to improve power capacity utilization and reduce power supply risks by optimizing the server placement in the power supply system.HGAACS uses historical power data of each server to find a better placement solution by population iteration.HGAACS possesses not only the remarkable local search ability of Ant Colony System(ACS),but also enhances the global search capability by incorporating genetic operators from Genetic Algorithm(GA).To verify the performance of HGAACS,we experimentally compare it with five other placement algorithms.The experimental results show that HGAACS can perform better than other algorithms in both improving power utilization and reducing the riskof powersupply system.

Facile synthesis of high-brightness green-emitting carbon dots with narrow bandwidth towards backlight display

High-performance carbon dots(CDs)allowing the application in high-end display devices are highly desirable and usually limited by the absence of simple and easy synthesis methods.In this work,we exploited an easy-to-implement strategy for the one-step synthesis of green-emitting CDs(G-CDs)with superb optical properties.The G-CDs were synthesized using m-phenylenediamine(m-PD)as a single precursor,and the reaction reacted at 180℃for 12 h The resultant G-CDs exhibit high-purity and excitationindependent green fluorescence with the photoluminescence(PL)peak located at 516 nm,full width at half maximum(FWHM)of 46 nm,and PL quantum yield(QY)of∼80%under the 470nm excitation light.The G-CDs and corresponding composite film prepared with polyvinyl butyral(G-CDs@PVB)exhibit good PL stability after undergoing long-time storage for one year and 360 h exposure under 460nm blue light.The G-CDs@PVB film was used as color-conversion materials in green-emitting light-emitting diode(LED)application,exhibiting a Commission internationale de l’Eclairage(CIE)chromaticity coordinate of(0.21,0.44).The film was also used in CD-based liquid crystal display(CD-LCD)application,achieving a color gamut value of 85%.This work will offer a working basis for the synthesis of high-performance CDs as well as their application in displays.

The presence of bacteria directly affects wound healing.Chitosan-based hydrogel biomaterials are a solution as they offer advantages for wound-healing applications due to their strong antimicrobial properties.Here,a double-cross-linking chitosanbased hydrogel with antibacterial,self-healing,and injectable properties is reported.Thiolated chitosan was successfully prepared,and the thiolated chitosan molecules were cross-linked by Ag-S coordination to form a supramolecular hydrogel.Subsequently,the amine groups in the thiolated chitosan covalently cross-linked with genipin to further promote hydrogel formation.In vitro experimental results indicate that hydrogel can release Ag^(+)over an extended time,achieving an antibacterial rate of over 99% against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus.Due to the reversible and dynamic feature of Ag-S coordination,an antibacterial hydrogel exhibited injectable and self-healing capabilities.Additionally,the hydrogel showed excellent biocompatibility and biodegradability.
