An Introduction to the Integrated Climate Model of the Center for Monsoon System Research and Its Simulated Influence of El Ni?no on East Asian–Western North Pacific Climate

This study introduces a new global climate model--the Integrated Climate Model （ICM）--developed for the seasonal prediction of East Asian-western North Pacific （EA-WNP） climate by the Center for Monsoon System Research at the Institute of Atmospheric Physics （CMSR, IAP）, Chinese Academy of Sciences. ICM integrates ECHAM5 and NEMO2.3 as its atmospheric and oceanic components, respectively, using OASIS3 as the coupler. The simulation skill of ICM is evaluated here, including the simulated climatology, interannual variation, and the influence of E1 Nifio as one of the most important factors on EA-WNP climate. ICM successfully reproduces the distribution of sea surface temperature （SST） and precipitation without climate shift, the seasonal cycle of equatorial Pacific SST, and the precipitation and circulation of East Asian summer monsoon. The most prominent biases of ICM are the excessive cold tongue and unrealistic westward phase propagation of equatorial Pacific SST. The main interannual variation of the tropical Pacific SST and EA-WNP climate E1 Nifio and the East Asia-Pacific Pattern--are also well simulated in ICM, with realistic spatial pattern and period. The simulated E1 Nifio has significant impact on EA-WNP climate, as in other models. The assessment shows ICM should be a reliable model for the seasonal prediction of EA-WNP climate.

General Growth of Carbon Nanotubes for Cerium Redox Reactions in High-Efficiency Redox Flow Batteries

Carbon nanotubes(CNTs)possess remarkable mechanical,electrical,thermal,and optical properties that predestine them for numerous potential *** conventional chemical vapor deposition(CVD)route for the production of CNTs,however,suffers from costly and complex ***,we demonstrate a general and high-yield strategy to grow nitrogendoped CNTs(NCNTs)on three-dimensional(3D)graphite felt(GF)substrates,through a direct thermal pyrolysis process simply using a common tube furnace,instead of the costly and complex CVD ***,the NCNTs-decorated GF(NCNT-GF)electrode possesses enhanced electrocatalytic performance towards cerium redox reactions,mainly due to the catalytic effect of N atoms doped into NCNTs,and ingenious and hierarchical 3D architecture of the *** a result,the cell with the NCNT-GF serving as a positive electrode shows the improved energy efficiency with increases of about 53.4%and 43.8%over the pristine GF and the acidly treated GF at a high charge/discharge rate of 30 mA cm^(-2),***,the as-prepared NCNT catalyst-enhanced electrode is found to be highly robust and should enable a long-term cycle without detectable efficiency loss after 500 *** viable synthetic strategy reported in this study will contribute to the further development of more active heteroatom-doped CNTs for redox flow batteries.

DelayD roid: an instrumented approach to reducing tail-time energy of Android apps

Mobile devices with 3G/4G networking often waste energy in the so-called "tail time" during which the radio is kept on even though no communication is occurring. Prior work has proposed policies to reduce this energy waste by batching network requests. However, this work is challenging to apply in practice due to a lack of mechanisms. In response, we have developed DelayD roid, a framework that allows a developer to add the needed policy to existing, unmodified Android applications(apps) with no human effort as well as no SDK/OS changes. This allows such prior work(as well as our own policies) to be readily deployed and evaluated. The DelayD roid compile-time uses static analysis and bytecode refactoring to identify method calls that send network requests and modify such calls to detour them to the DelayD roid run-time. The run-time then applies a policy to batch them, avoiding the tail time energy waste. DelayD roid also includes a cross-app communication mechanism that supports policies that optimize across multiple apps running together, and we propose a policy that does so. We evaluated the correctness and universality of the DelayD roid mechanisms on14 popular Android apps chosen from the Google App Store. To evaluate our proposed policy, we studied three DelayD roid-enabled apps(weather forecasting, email client, and news client) running together, finding that the DelayD roid mechanisms combined with our policy can reduce 3G/4G tail time energy waste by 36%.

Water-use efficiency in response to simulated increasing precipitation in a temperate desert ecosystem of Xinjiang, China

Water-use efficiency（WUE） is a key plant functional trait that plays a central role in the global cycles of water and carbon. Although increasing precipitation may cause vegetation changes, few studies have explored the linkage between alteration in vegetation and WUE. Here, we analyzed the responses of leaf WUE, ecosystem carbon and water exchanges, ecosystem WUE, and plant community composition changes under normal conditions and also under extra 15% or 30% increases in annual precipitation in a temperate desert ecosystem of Xinjiang, China. We found that leaf WUE and ecosystem WUE showed inconsistent responses to increasing precipitation. Leaf WUE consistently decreased as precipitation increased. By contrast, the responses of the ecosystem WUE to increasing precipitation are different in different precipitation regimes： increasing by 33.9% in the wet year（i.e., the normal precipitation years）and decreasing by 4.1% in the dry year when the precipitation was about 30% less than that in the wet *** systematically assessed the herbaceous community dynamics, community composition, and vegetation coverage to explain the responses of ecosystem WUE, and found that the between-year discrepancy in ecosystem WUE was consistent with the extent to which plant biomass was stimulated by the increase in precipitation. Although there was no change in the relative significance of ephemerals in the plant community, its greater overall plant biomass drove an increased ecosystem WUE under the conditions of increasing precipitation in 2011. However, the slight increase in plant biomass exerted no significant effect on ecosystem WUE in 2012. Our findings suggest that an alteration in the dominant species in this plant community can induce a shift in the carbon-and water-based economics of desert ecosystems.

A universal strategy of multi-objective active learning to accelerate the discovery of organic electrode molecules

Organic electrode molecules hold significant potential as the next generation of cathode materials for Li-ion batteries. In this study, we have introduced a multi-objective active learning framework that leverages Bayesian optimization and non-dominated sorting genetic algorithms-Ⅱ. This framework enables the selection of organic molecules characterized by high theoretical energy density and low gap(LUMO-HOMO)(LUMO, lowest unoccupied molecular orbital;HOMO, highest occupied molecular orbital). Remarkably, after only two cycles of active learning, the determination of coefficient can reach 0.962 for theoretical energy density and 0.920 for the gap with a modest dataset of 300 molecules, showcasing superior predictive capabilities. The 2,3,5,6-tetrafluorocyclohexa-2,5-diene-1,4-dione, selected by non-dominated sorting genetic algorithms-Ⅱ, has been successfully applied to Li-ion batteries as cathode materials, demonstrating a high capacity of 288 m Ah g^(-1)and a long cycle life of 1,000 cycles. This outcome underscores the high reliability of our framework. Furthermore, we have also validated the universality and transferability of our framework by applying it to two additional databases, the QM9 and OMEAD. When the training dataset of the model includes at least 500 molecules, the determination of coefficient essentially reaches approximately0.900 for four targets: gap, reduction potential, LUMO, and HOMO. Therefore, the universal framework in our work provides innovative insights applicable to other domains to expedite the screening process for target materials.

The welding temperature field of magnesium alloy AZ31 welded by TIG was measured with the uncooled infrared (IR) thermal imaging technology. The variables in the mathematic mode of welding temperature fields were revised by IR temperature data. Based on the results of simulation, the loss of temperature fields caused by arc interfered was compensated, and a whole temperature field was achieved, which provided a precise and powerful foundation for the investigation of microstructure of the joints.

Convex Hull Based Economic Operating Region for Power Grids Considering Uncertainties of Renewable Energy Sources

The increasing integration of renewable energy sources(RESs)presents significant challenges for the safe and economical operation of power *** the critical need to assess the effect of RES uncertainties on optimal scheduling schemes(OSSs),this paper introduces a convex hull based economic operating region(CH-EOR)for power *** CHEOR is mathematically defined to delineate the impact of RES uncertainties on power grid *** propose a novel approach for generating the CH-EOR,enhanced by a big-M preprocessing method to improve the computational *** on four test systems,the proposed big-M preprocessing method demonstrates notable advancements:a reduction in average operating costs by over 10%compared with the box-constrained operating region(BC-OR)derived from robust ***,the CH-EOR occupies less than 11.79%of the generators'adjustable region(GAR).Most significantly,after applying the proposed big-M preprocessing method,the computational efficiency is improved over 17 times compared with the traditional big-M method.

An adaptive offloading framework for Android applications in mobile edge computing

Mobile edge computing(MEC) provides a fresh opportunity to significantly reduce the latency and battery energy consumption of mobile applications. It does so by enabling the offloading of parts of the applications on mobile edges, which are located in close proximity to the mobile devices. Owing to the geographical distribution of mobile edges and the mobility of mobile devices, the runtime environment of MEC is highly complex and dynamic. As a result, it is challenging for application developers to support computation offloading in MEC compared with the traditional approach in mobile cloud computing, where applications use only the cloud for offloading. On the one hand, developers have to make the offloading adaptive to the changing environment, where the offloading should dynamically occur among available computation *** the other hand, developers have to effectively determine the offloading scheme each time the environment changes. To address these challenges, this paper proposes an adaptive framework that supports mobile applications with offloading capabilities in MEC. First, based on our previous study(DPartner), a new design pattern is proposed to enable an application to be dynamically offloaded among mobile devices, mobile edges,and the cloud. Second, an estimation model is designed to automatically determine the offloading *** this model, different parts of the application may be executed on different computation nodes. Finally, an adaptive offloading framework is implemented to support the design pattern and the estimation model. We evaluate our framework on two real-world applications. The results demonstrate that our approach can aid in reducing the response time by 8%–50% and energy consumption by 9%–51% for computation-intensive applications.

In situ observation of austenite grain growth behavior in the simulated coarse-grained heat-affected zone of Ti-microalloyed steels

The austenite grain growth behavior in a simulated coarse-grained heat-affected zone during thermal cycling was investigated via in situ observation. Austenite grains nucleated at ferrite grain boundaries and then grew in different directions through movement of grain boundaries into the ferrite phase. Subsequently, the adjacent austenite grains impinged against each other during the α→γtransformation. After the α→γ transformation, austenite grains coarsened via the coalescence of small grains and via boundary migration between grains. The growth process of austenite grains was a continuous process during heating, isothermal holding, and cooling in simulated thermal cycling. Abundant finely dispersed nanoscale TiN particles in a steel specimen containing 0.012wt% Ti effectively retarded the grain boundary migration, which resulted in refined austenite grains. When the Ti concentration in the steel was increased, the number of TiN particles de- creased and their size coarsened. The big particles were not effective in pinning the austenite grain boundary movement and resulted in coarse austenite grains.
