Simulation and Projection of the Western Pacific Subtropical High in CMIP5 Models

This work examined the performance of 26 coupled climate models participating in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 （CMIP5） in the simulation of the present-day temporal variability and spatial pattern of the western Pacifi c subtropical high （WPSH）. The results show that most models are able to capture the spatial distribution and variability of the 500-hPa geopotential height and zonal wind fi elds in the western subtropical Pacifi c, but with underestimated mean intensity of the WPSH. The underestimation may be associated with the cold bias of sea surface temperature in the tropical Indian and western Pacifi c oceans in the models. To eliminate the impact of the climatology biases, the climatology of these models is replaced by that of the NCEP/NCAR reanalysis in the verifi cation, and the models reproduce the WPSH’s enhancement and westward extension after the late 1970s. According to assessment of the simulated WPSH indices, it is found that some models （CNRM-CM5, FGOALS-g2, FIO-ESM, MIROC-ESM, and MPI-ESM-P） are better than others in simulating WPSH. Then, the ensemble mean of these better models is used to pro ject the future changes of WPSH under three representative concentration pathway scenarios （RCP8.5, RCP4.5, and RCP2.6）. The WPSH enlarges, strengthens, and extends westward under all the scenarios, with the largest linear growth trend projected in RCP8.5, smallest in RCP2.6, and in between in RCP4.5;while the ridge line of WPSH shows no obvious long-term trend. These results may have implications for the attribution and prediction of climate variations and changes in East Asia.

Brain-derived neurotrophic factor is a key factor in stress adaptation and avoidance of a social stress behavioral *** studies have shown that brain-derived neurotrophic factor expression in stressed mice is brain region–specific,particularly involving the corticolimbic system,including the ventral tegmental area,nucleus accumbens,prefrontal cortex,amygdala,and *** how brain-derived neurotrophic factor participates in stress processing in different brain regions will deepen our understanding of social stress *** this review,we discuss the expression and regulation of brain-derived neurotrophic factor in stress-sensitive brain regions closely related to the pathophysiology of *** focused on associated molecular pathways and neural circuits,with special attention to the brain-derived neurotrophic factor–tropomyosin receptor kinase B signaling pathway and the ventral tegmental area–nucleus accumbens dopamine *** determined that stress-induced alterations in brain-derived neurotrophic factor levels are likely related to the nature,severity,and duration of stress,especially in the above-mentioned brain regions of the corticolimbic ***,BDNF might be a biological indicator regulating stress-related processes in various brain regions.

Alzheimer's disease,the primary cause of dementia,is characterized by neuropathologies,such as amyloid plaques,synaptic and neuronal degeneration,and neurofibrillary *** amyloid plaques are the primary characteristic of Alzheimer's disease in the central nervous system and peripheral organs,targeting amyloid-beta clearance in the central nervous system has shown limited clinical efficacy in Alzheimer's disease *** abnormalities are commonly observed in patients with Alzheimer's *** liver is the primary peripheral organ involved in amyloid-beta metabolism,playing a crucial role in the pathophysiology of Alzheimer's ***,impaired cholesterol metabolism in the liver may exacerbate the development of Alzheimer's *** this review,we explore the underlying causes of Alzheimer's disease and elucidate the role of the liver in amyloid-beta clearance and cholesterol ***,we propose that restoring normal cholesterol metabolism in the liver could represent a promising therapeutic strategy for addressing Alzheimer's disease.

Surface embedded binary Co-Cu hydroxy phosphate over surface of oxy/hydroxides for efficient nitrate reduction to ammonia

Electrochemical nitrate reduction reaction(NO3RR)to ammonia is a promising approach to address excess Ncontamination in aqueous environment but suffers from a limited ammonia yield and selectivity due to the low concentration and sluggish *** work reports a three-dimensional porous electrode with binary Co_(2)Cu_(1)hydroxy phosphate embedded into the surface of Ni_(3)Co_(1)oxy/hydroxides(CoCu-PH@NiCo/Ni,“PH”means phosphate-hydroxide),which delivers a yield of 4.13 mg·h^(-1)·cm^(-2)with a high Faraday efficiency of 92.6%under a low nitrate concentration of 40 mM and provide an impressive *** embedded structure of the as-prepared catalyst exhibits unique metal coordination ligands and valence states different from the unitary *** electrochemical in situ infrared spectra and theoretical calculations revealed that the Co sites with the ability to dissociate water molecular to form adsorbed OH*can effectively provide the required protons for the deoxygenation and hydrogenation steps during NO3-conversion,thereby,effectively reducing the energy barrier of the key transition states in the NO3RR process to improve the intrinsic *** demonstrate that the rational design of binary components with the appropriate ability to activate water molecules as well as the threedimensional porous skeletal structure are expected to promote effectively the low-concentration nitrates conversion to ammonia.

From blocker to booster:Harnessing garnet surface chemistry for advanced solid-state electrolytes

Garnet electrolytes with high ionic conductivity and electrochemical stability are widely used as fillers to fabricate composite solid electrolytes(CPEs)within polymer ***,the performance of CPEs is significantly influenced by the surface characteristics of the garnet ***,the impact of garnet surface characteristics on CPEs was systematically investigated and a conversion from a typically unstable and Lewis basic surface to a more stable Lewis acidic surface was realized,which is shown to be more conductive to the improved performance of *** simultaneously removing the Li_(2)CO_(3)layer and applying a Li-Al-O coating,the influence of surface characteristics on CPEs was *** Lewis acid Li-Al-O surface coating not only promotes lithium salt dissociation,improving the ionic conductivity and ionic transfer number,but also prevents the reformation of the passive Lewis basic Li_(2)CO_(3)*** to garnet with a Lewis basic Li_(2)CO_(3)surface,the garnet modified with a Lewis acid Li-Al-O coating enhances CPEs,which exhibit an improved critical current density of 1.0 mA·cm^(-2)and highly stable lithium symmetric cell cycling for 400 h at 0.2 mA·cm^(-2).This research highlights the importance of surface chemistry in the design of high-performance solid-state batteries and presents a strategic modification approach for garnetbased CPEs.

Encapsulating metal nanoparticles in carbon shells(Metal@C)to enhance catalytic activity and stability has been certified ***,most existing methods for preparing Metal@C are complex,time-consuming,and lack of *** this study,a novel method that couples the high-temperature shock(HTS)with ultrasonic spray pyrolysis is reported,which can realize facile and scalable production of various Metal@C through the pyrolysis of glucose and metal chloride *** proposed HTS ultrasonic spray pyrolysis offers several advantages,including compact size,short reaction time(~120 ms),and uniform *** the Ni@C-40 nanocomposite as an example,the ultrasmall Ni nanoparticles(~10 nm)with thin carbon protective shells(~2 nm)are uniformly dispersed in the carbon matrix and applied for oxygen evolution reaction(OER)in alkaline *** Ni@C-40 optimized by tuning the thickness of carbon shell exhibits significantly enhanced OER activity with low overpotential of 242 mV at 10 mA·cm^(-2) and stability,which is attributed to the optimized interactions between Ni nanoparticles and carbon *** method also shows promise for continuous pyrolysis synthesis of various extreme materials at ultra-high temperatures using alternative electric heating materials.

Electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding inhigh-frequency range, especially the rapidly growing terahertz(THz) frequency range, attracts increasing attention due tothe potential application of terahertz in 6G wirelesscommunication, and security inspection. However, traditionalconductive EMI films typically achieve high shieldingeffectiveness through strong reflection, which may causesecondary pollution to other devices. Here, a gradientstructure strategy was proposed to constructTi_(3)C_(2)Tx/hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose (HPMC) film, in whichthe content of Ti_(3)C_(2)Tx gradually increases along the thicknessdirection, resulting in different conductivity of the two surfaces(surface-M and surface-H) for the film. The obtained gradientfilmexhibits an EMI shielding efficiency of over 48.5 dB in theTHz range (0.2-1.6 THz) at a thickness of 40 μm. Especially,as the THz waves incident from the surface-H to the film, the absorption effectiveness reaches 48.2 dB (average absorbedpower loss up to 91.4%), and the reflection effectiveness is only 0.3 dB. In additions, the gradient-film also demonstrates ahigh absorption rate of 95.5% in the infrared band (2.5-16.7 μm). Moreover, the gradient-film exhibits an excellent tensilestress and Young’s modulus value of 173.1 MPa and 2.8 GPa, respectively. Therefore, the gradient-film proposed in thiswork, with excellent electromagnetic absorption in both THz and infrared band, provides a promising candidate for the nextgenerationEMI shielding applications.

＜正＞ Transient fault detection mechanism is added to simultaneous multithreading architecture. By exploiting both 1LP （Instruction Level Parallelism） and TLP （Thread Level Parallelism）. Simultaneous Multithreading（SMT） Fault Tolerance Processor can be expected to achieve better tradeoff between performance and hardware cost than traditional Fault Tolerance Processors. Detailed simulations of 3 of SPEC95 benchmarks show that executing two redundant programs on the fault-tolerant microarchitecture takes only 40%-61% longer than running a single version of the program. The new instruction fetch algorithm enhances the performance by 0. 4% -1 % to most of the benchmarks we choose randomly.

A novel phenomenological model using a sine function for finite-element simulation of large-strain hot deformation

In hot deformation, the flow stress curves of steels always present as two typical types: at relatively high temperature and low strain rate, the flow stress may first increase and then attain a steady value without reaching an obvious peak stress; in other situations, the flow stress decreases after reaching peak stress and then attains a steady value. A new phenomenological model,described by a sine-function equation, is proposed to define the relationship between flow stress and deformation parameters. A series of isothermal compressions for a carbon steel were carried out, as a case study, to obtain basic experimental *** of the new model were sequentially determined. The predicted results of the proposed model were compared with actual measured data. Good accuracy was found in the standard statistical parameters of correlation coefficient, root mean square error, and average absolute relative error with the values of 0.935, 7.137 MPa and 4.352%, respectively. Discussion of applications of different models in finite-element simulation demonstrated the benefit of the new model. When comparing the simulation results of three different deformation patterns with large strain, the new model showed 10%–20% lower predicted forming load than the original Arrhenius equation, and better applicability and reliability than modified Arrhenius equations.

The Record-breaking Mei-yu in 2020 and Associated Atmospheric Circulation and Tropical SST Anomalies

The record-breaking mei-yu in the Yangtze-huaihe River valley(YHRV)in 2020 was characterized by an early onset,a delayed retreat,a long duration,a wide meridional rainbelt,abundant precipitation,and frequent heavy rainstorm *** is noted that the East Asian monsoon circulation system presented a significant quasi-biweekly oscillation(QBWO)during the mei-yu season of 2020 that was associated with the onset and retreat of mei-yu,a northward shift and stagnation of the rainbelt,and the occurrence and persistence of heavy rainstorm ***,during the mei-yu season,the monsoon circulation subsystems,including the western Pacific subtropical high(WPSH),the upper-level East Asian westerly jet,and the low-level southwesterly jet,experienced periodic oscillations linked with the *** notably,the repeated establishment of a large southerly center,with relatively stable latitude,led to moisture convergence and ascent which was observed to develop *** was accompanied by a long-term duration of the mei-yu rainfall in the YHRV and frequent occurrences of rainstorm ***,two blocking highs were present in the middle to high latitudes over Eurasia,and a trough along the East Asian coast was also active,which allowed cold air intrusions to move southward through the northwestern and/or northeastern *** cold air frequently merged with the warm and moist air from the low latitudes resulting in low-level convergence over the *** persistent warming in the tropical Indian Ocean is found to be an important external contributor to an EAP/PJ-like teleconnection pattern over East Asia along with an intensified and southerly displaced WPSH,which was observed to be favorable for excessive rainfall over YHRV.
