Understanding the physiological adaptations of non-treeline trees to environmental stress is important to understand future {2.fts in species composition and distribution of current treeline *** aim of the present study was to elucidate the mechanisms of the formation of the upper elevation limit of non-treeline tree species,Picea jezoensis,and the carbon allocation strategies of the species on Changbai *** employed the^(13)C in situ pulse labeling technique to trace the distribution of photosynthetically assimilated carbon in Picea jezoensis at different elevational positions(tree species at its upper elevation limit(TSAUE,1,700 m a.s.l.)under treeline ecotone;tree species at a lower elevation position(TSALE,1,400 m a.s.l.).We analyzed^(13)C and the non-structural carbohydrate(NSC)concentrations in various tissues following *** findings revealed a significant {2.ft in carbon allocation in TSAUE compared to *** was a pronounced increase inδ^(13)C allocation to belowground components(roots,soil,soil respiration)in TSAUE compared to ***,the C flow rate within the plant-soil-atmosphere system was faster,and the C residence time in the plant was shorter in *** trends indicate enhanced C sink activity in belowground tissues in TSAUE,with newly assimilated C being preferentially directed there,suggesting a more conservative C allocation strategy by *** at higher elevations under harsher *** a strategy,prioritizing C storage in roots,likely aids in withstanding winter cold stress at the expense of aboveground growth during the growing season,leading to reduced growth of TSAUE compared to *** results of the present study shed light on the adaptive mechanisms governing the upper elevation limits of non-treeline trees,and enhances our understanding of how non-treeline species might respond to ongoing climate change.

light grazing alleviates aeolian erosion–deposition effects on microbial communities in a semi-arid grassland

Background Soil erosion affects the stability of terrestrial ecosystems and ecosystem services by directly or indirectly impacting the cycling of soil materials and energy and reducing the fertility of grassland soils. However, research on microbial adaptation to grazing and soil erosion is limited, particularly in relation to grassland ecosystem restora-tion. here, we assess microbial communities subjected to simulated soil erosion and grazing in a semi-arid grassland of Inner Mongolia, *** No significant change was observed in soil variables. However, the structure of the soil microbial commu-nity underwent significant changes as a result of soil erosion and soil erosion plus grazing, leading to a significant increase in the relative abundance of Cyanobacteria(116.80% vs 116.38%). Wind erosion and deposition contributed to an increase in the network complexity of soil bacterial and fungal communities. However, much of this effect was alleviated by grazing. Simultaneously, aeolian processes and grazing regulate soil microbial community assembly, leading to inconsistent patterns of change in bacterial and fungal communities. Under wind erosion and deposi-tion, the relative contribution of deterministic processes(4.44% vs 31.11%) in bacterial communities increased, while the relative contribution of stochastic processes(2.2.% vs 2.%) in fungal communities reduced. Grazing resulted in a decrease in the relative contribution of deterministic processes(8.89%) in the bacterial community and an increase in the relative contribution of stochastic processes(8.89%) in the fungal *** This study presents a comprehensive investigation of the response of soil microbial communities to aeolian erosion–deposition and grazing in a semi-arid grassland. Restoring urbanization process in china in the 1990s by using non-radiance-ca{2.brated DMSP/OLS nighttime {2.ght imagery and statistical data

Since current administrative unit-based urban land area statistical data in china lack enough spatial information, the urbanization process re- search at large scale cannot be effectively supported. Based on the current administrative unit-based urban land area statistical data in china, a new approach to quickly and cheaply derive urban land information from the non-radiance-calibrated Defense Meteoro- logical Satellite Program/ Operational linescan Sys- tem (DMSP/OLS) nighttime light imagery is pre- sented in this paper. With the new approach, the ur- ban pattern information in china in 1992. 1996 and 1998 was derived with the urbanization processes in china in the 1990s restored by using the non-ra- diance-calibrated DMSP/OLS nighttime imagery. The accuracy assessment based on the statistical data showed that the relative error between the derived total urban land area and the statistical data at na- tional scale was less than 2. in 1992. and less than 1% in 1996 and 1998, and the maximum relative er- ror at province scale do not exceed 10% with most of the provinces less than 3%. In addition, the urban patterns derived from the high-resolution Landsat TM imagery were compared with those from the DMSP/ OLS data. The results showed that the urban pattern characteristics derived from DMSP/OLS were basi-cally coincident with those from TM imagery with the total accuracy of about 80%. Thus it can be seen that our restored urbanization process in china in the 1990s by using the non-radiance DMSP/OLS night- time imagery can be accepted and can represent the actual urban development in china at that time on the whole.

T{2. model is to simulate t{2. land use/cover scenario demands by using a SD model at first, and t{2.n allocating t{2. land use scenario patterns at t{2. local scale with t{2. considerations of land use/cover suitability, in{2.ritance ability and neighborhood effect by using BPNN-CA model to satisfy t{2. balance between land use/cover scenario demands and supplies. It integrates t{2. advantages of SD, BPNN and CA. Macro-driving factors and t{2. micro-spatial pattern are also fully taken into account. T{2. BPNN simplifies t{2. identification of t{2. factors’ weights used in CA model and improves t{2. reliability of t{2. simulation results. T{2. simulation accuracy of t{2. model developed in this paper was found to be about 74%. It suggests that t{2. model has t{2. ability to reflect t{2. complexity of land use/cover system at different scales to some extent and it is a useful tool for assessing t{2. potential impacts of land use system on ecosystem. The urbanization process of Bohai Rim in the 1990s by using DMSP/OLS data

This paper firstly derived urban information from Defense Meteorological Satellite Program/Operational linescan System （DMSP/OLS） data in 1992. 1996 and 1998 with t{2. support of statistical data, and t{2.n developed three basic urban models of polygon-urbanization, line-urbanization and point-urbanization in urban agglomerations from viewpoint of spatial analysis. T{2. conclusions are as follows：（1） Urban patch numbers in t{2. Bohai Rim increased from 1659 to 2.53 with an annual average increase number of about 66. Meanwhile, t{2. small urban patc{2.s accounted for a larger proportion in t{2. region and t{2. patch density increased fast. In addition, t{2. urban barycenter of t{2. region showed a moving trend toward northwest from 1992.to 1998. Urbanization in t{2. Bohai Rim in t{2. 1990s is fast and obvious. （2. Urbanization in t{2. Bohai Rim can be reflected by three basic processes, i.e., t{2. polygon-urbanization around t{2. big cities, t{2. line-urbanization around t{2. transportation lines and t{2. point-urbanization emerging in large areas. Of t{2.m, t{2. polygon-urbanization has been in dominance. It is obviously within an effective range of 3-4 km surrounding t{2. urban patc{2.s. T{2. line-urbanization and point-urbanization in t{2. region was relatively small, both of which showed an obvious increasing trend.
