The present research paper presents the synthesis, characterization, biological and computational studies of 4-(benzylideneamino) benzoic acid derivatives(3a~3g). Derivatives 3a~3c displayed best antidiabetic potential with a glucose-lowering effect compared to the reference drug Glibenclamide. Biochemical parameters including plasma glucose, serum triglycerides, cholesterol, alanine amino transferase and aspartate amino transferase levels showed significant alterations in concentrations relative to the control. Similarly, the derivatives 3a, 3d and 3e displayed potent in vitro antibacterial potential. Molecular docking simulations delineated that the ligands and complexes were stabilized at the active site by electrostatic and hydrophobic forces, consistent with the corresponding experimental results. In silico study of the binding pattern predicted that the synthesized ligands, 3d and 3a could serve as a potential surrogate for hit-to-lead generation and the design of novel antibacterial drugs.

Chalcone derivatives are of immense importance owing to their superior pharmacological profile. Minor changes in their structures create high degree of diversity that results in a broader spectrum of biological activities. The present research paper presents the synthesis of 3-（4-chloro-3-nitrophenyl）-1-phenylprop-2-en-1-one chalcone（I）, single crystal XRD analysis and the evaluation of its possible biological activities like cytotoxic（LD（50） = 5.40 ug/m L）and antileishmanial（LD（50） = 0.81 ug/m L） activities. The results indicate the tested chalcone（I）shows superior inhibition values against leishmanial promastigotes. Further, the possible interaction sites of chalcone（I） with Try R enzyme involved in the redox metabolism of the leishmanial parasite were determined using docking simulation technique. Docking computations demonstrate that the compound establishes prominent binding interactions with the key residues of Try R and possesses the potential to effectively inhibit the catalytic activities of enzyme. Thus the results suggest that the chalcone（I） can serve as a potential scaffold for the treatment of leishmaniasis and deserve further development.

Hematological Alterations in an Eastern Sudanese Chronic Kidney Disease Patient Population

Background: Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), associated with a slow and progressive loss of kidney function over a period of several years, is an important clinical disaster with an increasing rate of morbidity and mortality especially in the least developed countries. Many hematological parameters are thought to alter dramatically during the course of the disease. These include white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets. Methods: We tried, retrospectively, to evaluate the peripheral blood hematological alterations in a group of patients undergoing hemodialysis in an eastern Sudan dialysis center to add local medical information. Results: Anemia (Low hemoglobin and hematocrit) was detected in 94% of the patients’ group. Mean Erythrocyte count (3.32vs.4.76 (×109/L)), Hemoglobin concentration (9.4vs.13 (g/dl)), Hematocrit (28.7vs.38.7 (L/L)) and platelet count (296 vs. 238 (×109/L)) were significantly lower in the patients’ group than in the control group (P-values Conclusion: Five out of eight studied parameters (Red cell count, hemoglobin, hematocrit, mean cell hemoglobin concentration, and platelets count) have shown a significant alteration in CKD patients. As the complete blood count (CBC) test is the most utilized test in clinical laboratory practice, these alterations may be considered as early indicators for CKD. Furthermore, all patients with CKD must be routinely checked for these alterations.

Infection is a major potential complication in the clinical treatment of bone injuries. Magnesium (Mg)-based composites are biodegradable and antibacterial biomaterials that have been employed to reduce infection following surgical implants. The aim of present study was to synthesize and in-vitro characterize Mg-based scaffolds containing silver for bone tissue engineering. Porous Mg-based scaffolds with four silver concentrations (i.e., 0, 0.5 wt.%, 1 wt.%, and 2 wt.%), denoted by Mg?Ca?Mn-Zn-xAg (MCMZ?xAg)(where x is the silver concentration), were fabricated by the space holder technique. The effects of silver concentration on pore architecture, mechanical properties, bioactivity, and zone of bacterial inhibition were investigated in-vitro. X-ray diffractometry (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and fluorescence microscopy were utilized to characterize the obtained scaffolds. In-vitro corrosion test results indicated that the MCMZ scaffolds with lower silver content were more resistant to corrosion than those enriched with higher amounts of silver. Examination of the antibacterial activity showed that the MCMZ?Ag scaffolds exhibited superb potential with respect to suppressing the growth of Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), in the inhibition zone around the MCMZ?Ag scaffolds, with increasing in the amount of incorporated silver;however, higher amounts of silver increased the cytotoxicity. Taken together, the results of this study demonstrate that the porous 0.5 wt.% Ag-containing scaffolds with interconnected pores, adequate mechanical properties, antibacterial activity, and cell adhesion are promising with respect to the repair and substitution of damaged and diseased bones.

Influence of Organo-Metal Interactions on Regeneration of Exhausted Clay Mineral Sorbents in Soil Columns Loaded with Heavy Metals

Natural clay minerals can play an important role in crude remediation of wastewater polluted with the heavy metals （HMs） Cu, Zn and Ni. The presence and timing of ddition of natural dissolved organic matter （DOM） have a significant effect on the HM removal by clay mineral sorbents. However, the influence of the presence of DOM on the remediation of the used clay mineral sorbents once saturated with HMs is largely unknown. To resolve this, clay mineral-rich soil column of varying composition, loaded （i） with Cu, Zn and Ni only, （ii） first with DOM followed by Cu, Zn and Ni, or （iii） with DOM, Cu, Zn and Ni simultaneously, was used in a set of desorption experiments. The soil columns were leached with 0.001 mol L-1 CaCI2 dissolved in water as control eluent and 0.001 tool L-1 CaC12 dissolved in DOM as treatment eluent. During the preceding loading phase of the sorbent, the timing of DOM addition （sequential or concurrent with HMs） was found to have a significant influence on the subsequent removal of the HMs. In particular when the column was loaded with DOM and HMs simultaneously, largely irreversible co-precipitation took place. Our results indicate that the regeneration potential of clay mineral sorbents in wastewater treatment will be significantly reduced when the treated water is rich in DOM. In contrast, in manured agricultural fields （where HMs enter together with DOM）, HM mobility will be lower than expected from interaction dynamics of HMs and clay minerals.

Nephroprotective effects of Zingiber zerumbet Smith ethyl acetate extract against paracetamol-induced nephrotoxicity and oxidative stress in rats

Paracetamol (PCM) overdose can cause nephrotoxicity with oxidative stress as one of the possible mechanisms mediating the event. In this study, the effects of ethyl acetate extract of Zingiber zerumbet rhizome [200 mg per kg of body weight (mg/kg) and 400 mg/kg] on PCM-induced nephrotoxicity were examined. Rats were divided into five groups containing 10 rats each. The control group received distilled water while other groups were treated with extract alone (400 mg/kg), PCM alone (750 mg/kg), 750 mg/kg PCM+200 mg/kg extract (PCM+ 200-extract), and 750 mg/kg PCM+400 mg/kg extract (PCM+400-extract), respectively, for seven consecutive days. The Z. zerumbet extract was given intraperitoneally concurrent with oral administration of PCM. Treatment with Z. zerumbet extract at doses of 200 and 400 mg/kg prevented the PCM-induced nephrotoxicity and oxidative impairments of the kidney, as evidenced by a significantly reduced (P<0.05) level of plasma creatinine, plasma and renal malondialdehyde (MDA), plasma protein carbonyl, and renal advanced oxidation protein product (AOPP). Furthermore, both doses were also able to induce a significant increment (P<0.05) of plasma and renal levels of glutathione (GSH) and plasma superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity. The nephroprotective effects of Z. zerumbet extract were confirmed by a reduced intensity of renal cellular damage, as evidenced by histological findings. Moreover, Z. zerumbet extract administered at 400 mg/kg was found to show greater protective effects than that at 200 mg/kg. In conclusion, ethyl acetate extract of Z. zerumbet rhizome has a protective role against PCM-induced nephrotoxicity and the process is probably mediated through its antioxidant properties.

Assessment of the Radiological Impact on the Environment near a Storage Site of Coal Ashes in a Thermal Power Plant

The radiological impact of coal ashes, with enhanced natural radioactivity in the storage site, is due to the presence of naturally occurring radionuclides. Some of these radionuclides have a radioactive period of several million years and will, therefore, have time to migrate to the soil, atmospheric air, surface water, and groundwater. This impact depends mainly on the activity of these coal ashes, the duration of exposure to such waste, transfers to the air, and the leaching phenomenon by rainwater. In this study, and so as to assess the radiological impact of coal ashes of the storage site of the JLEC-Morocco thermal power plant on environment, some analyses are performed by alpha dosimetry and a digital dosimeter on samples of coal ashes, soil, atmospheric air, surface water and groundwater belonging to a perimeter of 10 km around that site. The obtained results show that, within the studied area, the radiological impact on the soil of the coal ashes of the storage site is insignificant even though the concentrations of radon in the near vicinity (1 to 2 km) are moderately important, and remain below 200 Bq/m3. In the atmospheric air, this impact remains medium for the neighborhoods of the storage site (2 to 3 km) with radon activities superior to 10 Bq/m3. These results also show that there may be a water contamination of wells located at the storage site without any transfer of radioactivity into the groundwater of the area studied where the concentrations of radon are less than 11.1 Bq/l.
