Santa Catarina is a small,developed,and relatively safe state in South *** having positive social economic indicators,it still faces multiple challenges regarding forensic practices for personal *** objective of this paper is to discuss the recent advances and current challenges in the region,from the perspectives of anthropological and dental postmortem human identification,missing persons,and disaster victim identification(DVI)from 2019 to *** recent creation of a Forensic Anthropology Sector(SAF)in the state’s official forensic institution(Polícia Científica-PCI)has significantly improved identification of unidentified remains and optimised resources available for DNA ***,SAF is still quite understaffed,which negatively affects the recovery of skeletal material,its preparation,and the time needed for filing *** Catarina has passed legislation for missing persons in 2015,4 years prior to the sanction of federal laws implementing the national policy for the ***,a lack of integration between stakeholders remains a problem that PCI has tried to circumvent with the Conecta Programme,a multidisciplinary and integrated initiative between families of the missing persons,police agencies,and the Public *** programme aims to collect not only reference DNA samples,but also relevant anthropological and dental *** also offers facial progression services in cases of disappearances that occurred many years *** a history of disasters in the state,PCI still needs to implement international DVI standards at an institutional *** training on Phase 1 DVI procedures,integrated with other responding institutions,indicates better preparation for future *** are many challenges ahead for Santa Catarina’s forensic institution and professionals that have yet to be addressed,but the overall situation on routine personal identification,missing persons initiatives,and DVI has impr

It is important to examine the ratio of measured to total sediment discharge to determine the error in measured sediment transport rates from depth-integrated samplers. The ratio of measured to total sediment discharge as well as the ratio of suspended to total sediment discharge are examined based on the Modified Einstein Procedure. Both ratios reduce to a function of the ratio of shear velocity, u?, to the fall velocity, ω, of suspended material, u?=ω, and the ratio, h=ds, of flow depth, h, to the median grain size of bed material, d50. In rivers transporting fine material(such as silt or clay), the ratio of suspended to total load is a function of the ratio, h=d50. In this study, it is found that the ratio of measured to total load becomes a simple function of flow depth. For fine sediment transport, with a Rouse number(Ro) o 0:3,at least 80% of sediment load is in suspension when h=d50415, and at least 90% of sediment load is measured from depth integrating samples when h 4 1 m. Detailed measurements from 35 river stations in South Korea demonstrate that sand sizes and finer fractions predominantly are transported in suspension. Also, at least 90% of sand and finer fractions are transported in suspension in gravel and sand bed rivers when the discharge is larger than the mean annual discharge.

Monitoring and factors affecting levels of airborne and water bromoform in chlorinated seawater swimming pools

Water and air quality of eight seawater swimming pools using chlorine disinfection was measured during four sampling campaigns, spread on one full-year, and in four thalassotherapy centers located in Southeast of France. Concentrations of trihalomethanes（THMs） in air and in water as well as concentrations of parameters, including nonpurgeable organic carbon（NPOC）, free residual chlorine（Cl_f）, pH, Kjeldhal Nitrogen（KN）, salinity,conductivity, bromide ions and, water and air temperature, were measured. Water and air samples were collected in triplicates morning — at the opening of the pools —, noon and night — at the closing of the pools —, in summer and winter. Data analysis was performed by Principal Component Analysis（PCA） and rotated component matrix, from both data quality and other parameters such as TOC, aromaticity（UV_（254））, pH, hygrometry, and free residual chlorine（Cl_f）. This statistical analysis demonstrates a high correlation between TOC, Cl_fand UV_（254） and THM levels found in air and water, particularly for the major ones（CHBr_3in water：300.0 μg/L mean, 1029.0 μg/L maximum; CHBr_3 in air： 266.1 μg/m^3 mean,1600.0 μg/m^3 maximum, and CHClBr_2 in water： 18.9 μg/L mean, 81.0 μg/L maximum;CHClBr_2 in air： 13.6 μg/m^3 mean, 150.0 μg/m^3maximum）. These high levels of bromoform（CHBr_3） are particularly worrisome in such health institutions, even these levels do not exceed the Permissible Exposure Limit（PEL） of 5 mg/m^3 as an 8 hour time-weighted average currently fixed by various administrations, such as Occupational Safety and Health Administration（OSHA）.

The recent emergence ofseveralplant diseases caused by psyllid-borne bacterial pathogens worldwide （Candidatus Liberibaeter spp.） has created renewed interest on the interaction between psyllids and bacteria. In spite of these efforts to understand psyllid association with bacteria, many aspects of their interactions remain poorly understood. As more organisms are studied, subtleties on the molecular interactions as well as on the effects of the bacteria on the psyllid host are being uncovered. Additionally, psyllid-borne bacterial phytopathogens can also affect the host plant, which in turn can impact psyllid physiology and behavior. Here, we review the current literature on different aspects of the influence of bacteria on multitrophic interactions among plants, psyllids, and pathogens. We then highlight gaps that need to be addressed to advance this field, which can have significant implications for controlling these newly emergent and other plant diseases.

Background:Puberty is a critical time in the development of overweight and *** aim of this study was to examine relationships between measures of adiposity,cardiovascular fitness,and biomarkers of cardiovascular disease risk in ***:In a cross-sectional study design,129 girls and 95 boys aged 12.9-14.4 years at various stages of puberty were included,along with their mothers(n=217)and fathers(n=207).Anthropometric assessments of adiposity were made,along with cardiovascular physical fitness,using the 20-m shuttle run test,and biomarkers associated with cardiovascular risk,including glucose,insulin,triglyceride,fibrinogen,and C-reactive protein(CRP)***:Waist-to-height ratio values were similar in boys and girls and correlated positively with diastolic blood pressure,insulin,triglyceride,fibrinogen,and CRP concentrations,and inversely with cardiovascular fitness *** thickness measurements were higher in ***-molecular-weight adiponectin concentrations were lower in boys than girls,particularly in late puberty,and CRP levels were *** fitness,maternal body mass index(BMI),and paternal BMI contributed independently to the variance in waist measurements in girls and ***,triceps skinfold thickness,and weight-to-height ratio,but not parental BMI,contributed independently to the variance in cardiovascular ***:There is a relationship between measures of adolescent adiposity and parental weight that involves factors other than cardiovascular *** boys have relatively more abdominal fat than girls and a tendency to have a proinflammatory profile of *** observations suggest that family and social environmental interventions are best undertaken earlier in childhood,particularly among boys.

Admix Compatibility in Carbon Black Loaded Toners

In a xerographic system where the charge on the toner is controlled by the electrical nature of the carbon black used as a pigment, it is found that the speed with which added toner is charged to the proper level depends on the relative electrical negativity of the carbon black in the original and added toner. This is due to the fact that the incumbent toner typically shares its charge with the new toner through charge exchange among the conductive carbon black particles. If the carbon blacks are electrically dissimilar, this charge sharing may fail. Thus, a toner may work well by itself in a machine, but the same toner may fail when added to a machine already running with a toner from a different vendor or even a different lot of toner from the same vendor. Thus the electrical nature of the carbon black needs to be controlled. This can be done by controlling the oxidation of the carbon black.

This paper presents a reliability-based settlement analysis of T-shaped deep cement mixing(TDM)pile-supported embankments over soft *** uncertainties of the mechanical properties of the in-situ soil,pile,and embankment,and the effect of the pile shape are considered *** analyses are performed using Monte Carlo Simulations in combination with an adaptive Kriging(using adaptive sampling algorithm).Individual and system failure probabilities,in terms of the differential and maximum settlements(serviceability limit state(SLS)requirements),are *** reliability results for the embankments supported by TDM piles,with various shapes,are compared and discussed together with the results for conventional deep cement mixing pile-supported embankments with equivalent pile *** influences of the inherent variabilities in the material properties(mean and coefficient of variation values)on the reliability of the piled embankments,are also *** study shows that large TDM piles,particularly those with a shape factor of greater than 3,can enhance the reliability of the embankment in terms of SLS requirements,and even avoid unacceptable reliability levels caused by variability in the material properties.

Effects of meteorological conditions and topography on the bioaccumulation of PAHs and metal elements by native lichen(Xanthoria parietina)

The bioaccumulation of PAHs and metal elements in the indigenous lichens Xanthoria parietina was monitored during two years at a quarterly frequency,in 3 sites of contrasted anthropic *** impact of the meteorological factors(temperature,relative humidity,rainfall,wind speed)was first estimated through principal component analysis,and then by stepwise multilinear regressions to include wind *** pollutants levels reflected the proximity of atmospheric emissions,in particular from a large industrial *** humidity and mild temperatures,and in a lower extent low wind speed and rainfall,also favored higher concentration *** contributions of these meteorological aspects became minor when including wind direction,especially when approaching major emission *** bioaccumulation integration time towards meteorological variations was on a seasonal basis(1–2 months)but the wind direction and thus local emissions also relied on a longer time scale(12 months).This showed that the contribution of meteorological conditions may be prevalent in remote places,while secondary in polluted areas,and should be definitely taken into account regarding long-term lichen biomonitoring and inter-annual *** the same time,a quadruple sampling in each site revealed a high homogeneity among supporting tree species and *** resulting uncertainty,including sampling,preparation and analysis was below 30%when comfortable analytical conditions were ***,the occurrence of unexpected events such as a major forest fire,permitted to evaluate that this type of short,although intense,events did not have a strong influence on PAH and metals bioaccumulation by lichen.
