Reading comprehension without phonological mediation:Further evidence from a Chinese aphasic individual

An important issue in visual word comprehension literature is whether or not semantic access is mediated by phonological processing. In this paper, we present a Chinese individual, YGA, who provides converging evidence to directly address this issue. YGA has sustained damage to the left posterior superior and middle temporal lobe, and shows difficulty in orally name pictures and reading printed words aloud. He makes phonological errors on these tasks and also semantic errors on picture naming, indicating a deficit at accessing the phonological representations for output. However, he is intact at understanding the meaning of visually presented words. Such a profile challenges the hypothesis that semantic access in reading is phonologically mediated and provides further evidence for the universal principle of direct semantic access in reading.

＜正＞We firstly describe an investigation into the deficits of Chinese orthographic output buffer. We report a Chinese dysgraphic male, whose accuracy in delayed copy of characters was markedly sensitive to word length （number of logographemes）, but was not affected by lexical-semantic factors （frequency, abstract quality, or grammatical class）, lexicality （characters vs. noncharacters） and sublexical property （regularity）. More importantly, his most frequent writing errors occurred at the logographeme level, not others （such as whole character, semantic/phonetic radical, stroke）. The errors of logographeme substitutions were prevalent, where target logographeme and response trended to share common position and stroke shapes. His writing also presented a linear serial position effect, characterized by gradual increasing errors from initial logogrampheme to final one in character. Thus, we speculate that present patient suffered from the impairment of orthographic output buffer. The logographemes may be basic processing units in this buffer, in which orthographic representation of logographemes at least contains information on logographemes’ identity, order, position, et al.

Object conceptual processing has been localized to distributed cortical regions that represent specific attributes. A challenging question is how object semantic space is *** tested a novel framework of representing semantic space in the pattern of white matter(WM) connections by extending the representational similarity analysis(RSA) to structural lesion pattern and behavioral data in 80 brain-damaged patients. For each WM connection, a neural representational dissimilarity matrix(RDM) was computed by first building machine-learning models with the voxel-wise WM lesion patterns as features to predict naming performance of a particular item and then computing the correlation between the predicted naming score and the actual naming score of another item in the testing *** correlation was used to build the neural RDM based on the assumption that if the connection pattern contains certain aspects of information shared by the naming processes of these two items, models trained with one item should also predict naming accuracy of the other. Correlating the neural RDM with various cognitive RDMs revealed that neural patterns in several WM connections that connect left occipital/middle temporal regions and anterior temporal regions associated with the object semantic space. Such associations were not attributable to modality-specific attributes(shape, manipulation, color, and motion), to peripheral picture-naming processes(picture visual similarity, phonological similarity), to broad semantic categories, or to the properties of the cortical regions that they connected,which tended to represent multiple modality-specific attributes. That is, the semantic space could be represented through WM connection patterns across cortical regions representing modality-specific attributes.
