A matrix metalloproteinase-responsive hydrogel system controls angiogenic peptide release for repair of cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury

Vascular endothelial growth factor and its mimic peptide KLTWQELYQLKYKGI(QK)are widely used as the most potent angiogenic factors for the treatment of multiple ischemic ***,conventional topical drug delivery often results in a burst release of the drug,leading to transient retention(inefficacy)and undesirable diffusion(toxicity)in ***,a drug delivery system that responds to changes in the microenvironment of tissue regeneration and controls vascular endothelial growth factor release is crucial to improve the treatment of ischemic *** metalloproteinase-2(MMP-2)is gradually upregulated after cerebral ***,vascular endothelial growth factor mimic peptide QK was self-assembled with MMP-2-cleaved peptide PLGLAG(TIMP)and customizable peptide amphiphilic(PA)molecules to construct nanofiber hydrogel ***-TIMP-QK was found to control the delivery of QK by MMP-2 upregulation after cerebral ischemia/reperfusion and had a similar biological activity with vascular endothelial growth factor in *** results indicated that PA-TIMP-QK promoted neuronal survival,restored local blood circulation,reduced blood-brain barrier permeability,and restored motor *** findings suggest that the self-assembling nanofiber hydrogel PA-TIMP-QK may provide an intelligent drug delivery system that responds to the microenvironment and promotes regeneration and repair after cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury.

Wetting Behavior and Interfacial Reactions in (Sn-9Zn)-2Cu/Ni Joints during Soldering and Isothermal Aging

The wetting property of （Sn-9Zn）-2Cu （wt pct） on Ni substrate and the evolution of interracial microstructure in （Sn-9Zn）-2Cu/Ni joints during soldering as well as isothermal aging were studied. The wetting ability of eutectic Sn-gZn solder on Ni substrate was markedly improved by adding 2 wt pct Cu into this solder alloy. Plate-like Cu5Zn8 intermetallic compounds （IMCs） were detected in （Sn-9Zn）-2Cu solder matrix. A continuous NisZn21 IMC layer was formed at （Sn-9Zn）-2Cu/Ni interface after soldering. This IMC layer kept its type and integrality even after aging at 170℃ for up to 1000 h. At the early aging stage （before 500 h）, the IMC layer grew fast and its thickness followed a linear relationship with the square root of aging time. Thereafter, however, the thickness increased very slowly with longer aging time. When the joints were aged for 1000 h, a new IMC phase, （Cu,Ni）5Zn8, was found in the matrix near the interface. The formation of （Cu,Ni）5Zns phase can be attributed to the diffusion of Ni atoms into the solder matrix from the substrate.

Preparation and Characterization of Poly(melamine-urea-formaldehyde) Tetradecanol Microcapsules Coated with Silver Particles

A novel type of microencapsulated phase change materials(microPCMs)based on 1-tetradecanol(TD)core and silver-coated poly(melamine-urea-formaldehyde)(MUF)shell was successfully synthesized by in situ polymerization method followed by silver ***-transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR),X-ray diffraction(XRD),scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry(SEM/EDS),thermogravimetric analysis(TGA)and differential scanning calorimetry(DSC)were used to characterize the chemical structure,morphology and thermal properties of the as-prepared silver-coated *** analysis confirmed the successful encapsulation of TD with MUF wall *** SEM and EDS results indicated that the prepared silver-coated MUF microPCMs exhibited uniform spherical shape with a perfect silver outer *** XRD analysis,the Ag metal dispersed on the surface of microcapsules presented the form of elementary *** deposition weight of silver particles on the microcapsule surface increased with increasing the amount of silver nitrate,as indicated by EDS *** DSC results indicated that the melting temperature and the melting latent heat of microPCMs modified with 0.7g of silver nitrate in 150mL aqueous solution were 39.2°C and 126.6J·g^-1,*** of the microPCMs coated with silver particles was effectively suppressed,compared with that of microPCMs without ***,the encapsulation of TD with silver-coated MUF shell developed by this work can be an effective method to prepare the microPCMs with enhanced thermal transfer performance and phase change properties.

Optical spectroscopy and crystal-field strength of Cr^(3+) in various solid matrixes

The Cr^3＋：BeAl2O4 crystal, Cr^3＋：LiNbO3 crystal, and ZnO-Al2O3-SiO2 glass-ceramic were obtained by the Czochralski technique, Bridgman method, and melting processing, respectively. The optical absorption and emission spectra of the above Cr^3＋-incorporated solid-state materials were recorded. The technical parameters for growing high-quality Cr^3＋：BeAl2O4 and Cr^3＋：LINbO3 crystals were obtained. The results indicate that the optical absorption and fluorescence spectra of Cr^3＋ show quite a few differences in various matrixes. The sharp line emissions were observed in the Cr^3＋：BeAl2O4 and Cr^3＋：LiNbO3 crystals. The crystal-field parameters （Dq） for Cr^3＋. in different matrixes were calculated from their corresponding spectra. It is indicated that Cr^3＋：BeAl2O4 and Cr^3＋：LiNbO3 belong to the high-field site crystal, while the Cr^3＋ ZnO-Al2O3-SiO2 glass and glass-ceramic belong to the weak-field site crystal.

Vegetable Genetic Resources in China

China is recognized as an important region for plant biodiversity based on its vast and historical collection of vegetable germplasm. The aim of this review is to describe the exploration status of vegetable genetic resources in China, including their collection, preservation, evaluation, and utilization. China has established a number of national-level vegetable genetic resources preservation units, including the National Mid-term Genebank for Vegetable Germplasm Resources, the National Germplasm Repository for Vegetatively-Propagated Vegetables, and the National Germplasm Repository for Aquatic Vegetables. In 2015, at least 36 000 accessions were collected and preserved in these units. In the past decade, 44 descriptors and data standards for different species have been published, and most accessions have been evaluated for screening the germplasms for specific important traits such as morphological characteristics, disease resistance, pest resistance, and stress ***, the genetic diversity and evolution of some vegetable germplasms have been evaluated at the molecular level. Recently, more than 1 000 accessions were distributed to researchers and breeders each year by various means for vegetable research and production. However,additional wild-relative and abroad germplasms from other regions need to be collected and preserved in the units to expand genetic ***, there is a need to utilize advanced techniques to better understand the background and genetic diversity of a wide range of vegetable genetic resources. This review will provide agricultural scientists' insights into the genetic diversity in China and provide information on the distribution and potential utilization of these valuable genetic resources.

Genetic relationship between serum pregnancy-associated plasma protein-A gene polymorphism and ischemic cerebrovascular disease in a Northern Han Chinese population

The present study recruited 193 patients with ischemic cerebrovascular disease from Inpatient and Outpatient Departments at the Affiliated Hospital of Qingdao University Medical College, China from August 2008 to May 2010, as well as 120 healthy volunteers from the Medical Examination Center at the Affiliated Hospital of Qingdao University Medical College, China, who served as controls for this study. Patients and control subjects were from the Han population in northern China. Enzyme- linked immunosorbent assay analysis revealed increased levels of serum pregnancy-associated plasma protein-A （PAPP-A） in ischemic cerebrovascular disease patients compared with healthy controls. In addition, the patients exhibited greater frequency of genotype CC and C alleles in a missense A/C （Tyr/Ser） polymorphism （dbSNP： rs7020782） of exon 14 in the PAPP-A gene. Multiple-factor logistic regression analysis on correction of age, gender, history of smoking, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, hypercholesteremia, and ischemic stroke family history showed that the risk for ischemic cerebrovascular disease in the population without the A allele at the A/C genetic locus in exon 14 of the PAPP-A was 2-folds greater than the population expressing the A allele. These experimental findings suggested that ischemic cerebrovascular disease correlated with the C allele in exon 14 of PAPP-A. In addition, the A allele is likely a protective gene; individuals carrying the A allele were less prone to ischemic cerebrovascular disease compared with individuals without the A allele.

Ground-Space Correlation of TM Data and Its Application to the Prediction of Gold Deposits

Abstract: It has been inferred and proved by the remote sensing equations under rational hypotheses in atmospheric physics that there is a linear correlation between the ground reflective brightness Wij and the total reflective brightness Rij received in different bands with a remote sensor. Nine models delineating the ground-space correlation between the ground spectra and the optimal bands of images of the typical gold deposits have been established based on the ground-space correlativity and field measurements of the ground spectra of the typical gold deposits in the Ailaoshan area. According to the 9 correlation models, TM images were inverted into ground-space correlation images that are related to the typical gold deposits within the area and then recognized by a computer. Research on the ground spectra and TM data in the Ailaoshan area shows that the correlation analysis of the ground spectra and TM data of gold deposits can be effectively applied to the prediction of gold deposits, location of prospecting targets, and extraction of imagery information of gold mineralization.

Ischemic stroke susceptibility gene in a Northern Han Chinese population

Interleukin-18 gene promoter polymorphisms are potential risk factors for ischemic cerebrovascular disease, and the –607C allele may increase ischemic stroke risk in the Han Chinese population. In the present study, we recruited 291 patients with ischemic cerebrovascular disease from the Affiliated Hospital of Qingdao University Medical College, China, and 226 healthy controls. Both patients and controls were from the Han population in northern China. Immunoresonance scattering assays detected increased serum amyloid A protein, C-reactive protein, and interleukin-18 levels in ischemic cerebrovascular disease patients compared with healthy controls. Analysis of the –607C/A （rs1946518） polymorphism in the interleukin-18 gene promoter showed ischemic cerebrovascular disease patients exhibited increased frequencies of the CC genotype and C alleles than healthy controls. Genotype and allele frequencies of the interleukin-18 –137G/C （rs187238） polymorphism and the –13T/C （rs11024595） polymorphism in the 5＇-flanking region of serum amyloid A, showed no significant difference between the two groups. Multivariate logistic regression analysis on the interleukin-18 promoter A/C genetic locus, for correction of age, gender, history of smoking, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, hypercholesteremia, and an ischemic stroke family history, showed ischemic cerebrovascular disease risk in individuals without the A allele （C homozygotes） was 2.2-fold greater than in A allele carriers. Overall, our findings suggest that the –13T/C （rs11024595） polymorphism in the 5′-flanking region of serum amyloid A has no correlation with ischemic cerebrovascular disease, but the C allele of the –607C/A （rs1946518） polymorphism in the interleukin-18 promoter is a high-risk factor for ischemic cerebrovascular disease in the Han population of northern China. In addition, the A allele is likely a protective gene for ischemic cerebrovascular disease.

Changes in the microbial community structure and diversity during the electricity generation process of a microbial fuel cell with algal-film cathode

A two-chamber microbial fuel cell(MFC)with algal-film cathode was *** showed good electric-generating performance with three electric-generating stages:start-up,development,and *** average output voltage reached~0.412 V during the stable period.A maximum power density during continuous operation was 19.76 mW/m^(2).Bacterial samples were collected from the anode in the three stages(A1,A2,and A3),and their community structure and diversity were analyzed using Illumina MiSeq high-throughput sequencing technology.A total of 4238 operational taxonomic units were identified based on the number of *** the phylum level,Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes played a dominant role in the three stages and increased significantly during electricity *** with A1,the relative abundances of Proteobacteria in A2 and A3 increased by 23.30%and 32.06%,respectively,whereas those of Bacteroidetes in A2 and A3 increased by 5.56%and 14.50%,*** the genus level,there were differences in the composition of bacterial communities among the three *** and Chlorobium became the dominant genera in A2,replacing Nitrospira and norank_f__Saprospiraceae in A1,and Sphingobacterium and Ochrobactrum became the dominant genera in *** to the sample cluster and principal component analyses,A1 was clustered into one class,and A2 and A3 were clustered into a second *** work revealed bacterial community succession at the anode of an algal-film cathode MFC during the electricity generation process,which provides a theoretical basis for the subsequent promotion of electricity generation by algal-film cathode MFCs.
