Change in coral reef benthic communities in the Lembeh Strait and Likupang, North Sulawesi, Indonesia

Anthropogenic impacts and natural disturbances have been intense recently in the global scale, affecting the composition of coral reef benthic communities from coral to algal dominated reefs. However, this condition does not always occur considering corals are able to recover when the stressors falter. This study aims to investigate the change in coral reef benthic communities and the relationship among benthic categories. The study was carried out in 2014 and 2016 at five sites, three sites in the Lembeh Strait and two sites in Likupang, North Sulawesi Province. Underwater Photo Transect(UPT) was used at depth of around 4–6 m in slope areas. The result indicated that the benthic communities were slightly changing: the percent covers of hard corals, sponges, soft corals, macroalgae and substrate categories were not significantly different between the years but category of others, particularly seasonally growing hydroid, increased significantly, occupying the available substrates and overtopping other benthos surrounding. The study also found that there was a significant relationship between the change in benthic gradient and the number of hard coral colonies: when the composition becomes less complex, the number of colony declines. In contrast, the hard coral diversity remained unchanged, suggesting the coral reefs apparently have an ecological resilience(sustainable species diversity) against the change although ecological complexity declines. In addition, the hard coral cover was significantly correlated with soft coral and sponge covers, which did not change significantly among the years. In general, the coral reefs in North Sulawesi might experience a temporary blip due to the increasing percent cover of others, and be predicted to recover as there was no indication of soft corals and sponges to increase significantly. However, it is necessary to investigate the dynamic of benthic communities in different depth gradients to gain a comprehensive understanding as the communities respond differently to the light

An ocean acidification-simulated system and its application in coral physiological studies

Due to the elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide, ocean acidification(OA) has recently emerged as a research theme in marine biology due to an expected deleterious effect of altered seawater chemistry on calcification. A system simulating future OA scenario is crucial for OA-related studies. Here, we designed an OA-simulated system(OASys) with three solenoid-controlled CO_2 gas channels. The OASys can adjust the pH of the seawater by bubbling CO_2 gas into seawaters via feedback systems. The OASys is very simple in structure with an integrated design and is new-user friendly with the instruction. Moreover, the OASys can monitor and record real-time pH values and can maintain pH levels within 0.02 pH unit. In a 15-d experiment, the OASys was applied to simulate OA in which the expected target pH values were 8.00, 7.80 and 7.60 to study the calcifying response of Galaxea fascicularis. The results showed daily mean seawater pH values held at pH 8.00±0.01, 7.80±0.01 and 7.61±0.01 over15 d. Correspondingly, the coral calcification of G. fascicularis gradually decreased with reduced pH.

Next-generation sequencing revealed specific microbial symbionts in Porites lutea with pigment abnormalities in North Sulawesi, Indonesia

Bacterial diseases affecting corals pose an enormous threat to the health of coral reefs. The relationship between certain bacterial species and coral diseases remain largely unknown. Pigment abnormalities are common in Porites lutea. Here we used Illumina 16S rRNA gene sequencing to analyze the bacterial communities associated with healthy P. lutea and P. lutea with pigment abnormalities. We observed an increase of alpha diversity of the bacterial community of P. lutea with pigment abnormalities, relative to healthy corals. We then identified changes in the abundance of individual operational taxonomic units(OTUs) between pigmented and healthy corals. We were able to identify eight OTUs associated with pigment abnormalities, which are possibly the causative agents of pigment abnormalities.

Genetic variation of Leptospira isolated from rats catched in Yogyakarta Indonesia

Objective: To detect genetic variations among pathogenic Leptospira isolated from rats using 16 S r RNA gen as chronometer. Methods: This is an observational study with cross sectional design. Rats saples were taken in Yogyakarta Special Region of Indonesia. Leptospira in the rats was detected by two methods ie. real time PCR(q PCR) by using primers correspond to16 S r RNA gene of Leptospira, and standard PCR by using dif erent set of primer correspond to the 16 S r RNA gene of Leptospira. The standard PCR amplicon then subjected for DNA sequencing. Analysis genetic variation was performed using MEGA 6.2. Software. Results:There were 99 DNA samples from rats included in this study. Detection of Leptospira by using q PCR revealed 25 samples positive for pathogenic Leptospira, while only 6 samples were able to be detected using standard PCR. The new primer set correspond to 16 S r RNA gene was able to detect specii cally pathogenic Leptospira in the rats. Sequencing analysis of 6 PCR amplicons showed that the Leptospira which infect the rats catched in Yogyakarta genetically close related with pathogenic Leptospira which were isolated from human, animal, rodents, and environment. Conclusions: It can be considered that rats are the most important vector and reservoir of Leptospira.

Liouvillian Solutions of Algebraic Ordinary Differential Equations of Order One of Genus Zero

This paper considers the class of autonomous algebraic ordinary differential equations(AODEs)of order one,and studies their Liouvillian general solutions.In particular,let F(y,w)=0 be a rational algebraic curve over C.The authors give necessary and sufficient conditions for the autonomous first-order AODE F(y,y′)=0 to have a Liouvillian solution over C.Moreover,the authors show that a Liouvillian solutionαof this equation is either an algebraic function over C(x)or an algebraic function over C(exp(ax)).As a byproduct,these results lead to an algorithm for determining a Liouvillian general solution of an autonomous AODE of order one of genus zero.Rational parametrizations of rational algebraic curves play an important role on this method.

One-loop formulas for H→Zνlνl for l=e, μ, τ in 't Hooft-Veltman gauge

In this paper,we present analytical results for one-loop contributions to the decay processes H→■(for l=e,μ,τ).The calculations are performed within the Standard Model framework in the ’t Hooft-Veltman gauge.One-loop form factors are then written in terms of scalar one-loop functions in the standard notations of LoopTools.As a result,one-loop decay rates for the decay channels can be evaluated numerically by using the package.Furthermore,we analyze the signals of H→■l via the production processes e-e+→ZH*→Z(H*→■),including the initial beam polarizations at future lepton colliders.The Standard Model backgrounds,such as the processes e-e+→■,are also examined in this study.Numerical results indicate that one-loop corrections make contributions of approximately 10% to the decay rates.These are sizeable contributions and should be taken into account at future colliders.We show that the signals H→■l are clearly visible at the center-of-mass energy ■ =GeV and are difficult to probe in higher-energy regions owing to the dominant backgrounds.

Feature-Based Augmentation in Sarcasm Detection Using Reverse Generative Adversarial Network

Sarcasm detection in text data is an increasingly vital area of research due to the prevalence of sarcastic content in online communication.This study addresses challenges associated with small datasets and class imbalances in sarcasm detection by employing comprehensive data pre-processing and Generative Adversial Network(GAN)based augmentation on diverse datasets,including iSarcasm,SemEval-18,and Ghosh.This research offers a novel pipeline for augmenting sarcasm data with Reverse Generative Adversarial Network(RGAN).The proposed RGAN method works by inverting labels between original and synthetic data during the training process.This inversion of labels provides feedback to the generator for generating high-quality data closely resembling the original distribution.Notably,the proposed RGAN model exhibits performance on par with standard GAN,showcasing its robust efficacy in augmenting text data.The exploration of various datasets highlights the nuanced impact of augmentation on model performance,with cautionary insights into maintaining a delicate balance between synthetic and original data.The methodological framework encompasses comprehensive data pre-processing and GAN-based augmentation,with a meticulous comparison against Natural Language Processing Augmentation(NLPAug)as an alternative augmentation technique.Overall,the F1-score of our proposed technique outperforms that of the synonym replacement augmentation technique using NLPAug.The increase in F1-score in experiments using RGAN ranged from 0.066%to 1.054%,and the use of standard GAN resulted in a 2.88%increase in F1-score.The proposed RGAN model outperformed the NLPAug method and demonstrated comparable performance to standard GAN,emphasizing its efficacy in text data augmentation.

Modeling water resources under competing demands for sustainable development: A case study of Kaligandaki Gorge Hydropower Project in Nepal

The challenges posed by climate change require that the quantity and quality of water resources in Nepal be managed with sustainable development practices. The communities around the Kaligandaki Gorge Hydropower Project in the Myagdi District of Nepal depend on river flow for most of their rural and agricultural needs. Without a sustainable development plan, the growing population of the region, confined in an area with declining water resources, will face serious challenges to economic growth. Meteorological data show increasing annual average rainfall at a slight rate of about 0.284 mm/year, with erratic annual percentage change in rainfall in the area. The mean and minimum temperatures show decreasing trends at the rates of 0.05-C and 0.14-C per year, respectively. An assessment of the impacts on water availability for domestic and irrigation usage in the face of competing demands caused by the hydropower development project in the Kaligandaki Gorge was undertaken. The water demand and supply modeling were conducted using the water evaluation and planning (WEAP) model, based on discharge data from the Kaligandaki River, which were obtained from the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, Nepal. The available data from 2001 to 2003 were used to estimate the model parameters while the stability of these parameters was tested with a validation period from 2004 to 2007. The performance of the model was assessed through statistical measures of calibration with the root mean square error and coefficient of determination, whose values were 0.046% and 0.79, respectively. Two scenarios were created in addition to the base case scenario: the discharge decrement scenario and new irrigation technology scenario. Analysis showed that a prioritization of demands will be necessary in the area in the near future for the purpose of sustainability of water resources, due to climate change impacts.

目的:比较Artisan和Artiflex有晶状体眼人工晶状体(PIOL)矫正亚洲人群高度近视的屈光度和安全性。方法:历史队列研究。回顾2016/2020在印度尼西亚日惹市Yap眼科医院接受PIOL植入术的81例高度近视眼。根据植入PIOL分为Artisan组43眼,Artiflex组38眼。分别记录术前及术后1d、1、3mo的视力、角膜生物显微镜参数和眼压,包括术前前房深度。结果:Artisan和Artiflex组的平均随访时间分别为9.64±6.93mo和8.96±4.28mo(P=0.736)。Artisan组的疗效指数为1.03±0.47,Artiflex组为1.02±0.17(P=0.119);安全性指数分别为1.10±0.45和1.05±0.21(P<0.001)。Artisan组的平均等效球镜度(SE)为-0.64±0.996D,Artiflex组为-0.22±0.58D(P=0.076)。两组术后内皮细胞密度(ECD)较术前均显著下降(P<0.05),累积ECD缺失率为7.44%和5.79%(P=0.418)。结论:Artisan和Artiflex矫正亚洲人高度近视的屈光效果相当。与Artiflex相比,Artisan的安全指数略高,而两组的疗效指数和累积ECD缺失率相似。
