In vitro Cyto and Blood Compatibility of Titanium Containing Diamond-Like Carbon Prepared by Hybrid Sputtering Method

In recent years, diamond-like carbon films （DLC） have been given more attention in research in the biomedical industry due to their potential application as surface coating on biomedical materials such as metals and polymer substrates. There are many ways to prepare metal containing DLC films deposited on polymeric film substrates, such as coatings from car- bonaceous precursors and some means that incorporate other elements. In this study, we in- vestigated both the surface and biocompatible properties of titanium containing DLC （Ti-DLC） films. The Ti-DLC films were prepared on the surface of poly （ethylene terephthalate）（PET） film as a function of the deposition power level using reactive sputtering technique. The films＇ hydrophilicity was studied by contact angle and surface energy tests. Their surface morphology was studied by scanning electron microscopy （SEM） and atomic force microscopy （AFM）. Their elemental chemical composition was analyzed using energy dispersive X-spectra （EDX） and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy （XPS）. Their blood and cell compatibility was studied by in vitro tests, including tests on platelet adhesion, thrombus formation, whole blood clotting time and osteoblast cell compatibility. Significant changes in the morphological and chemical composition of the Ti-DLC films were observed and found to be a function of the deposition level. These morphological and chemical changes reduced the interfacial tension between Ti-DLC and blood proteins as well as resisted the adhesion and activation of platelets on the surface of the Ti-DLC films. The cell compatibility results exhibited significant growth of osteoblast cells on the surface of Ti incorporated DLC film compared with that of DLC film surface.

The research and development of advanced nanocoatings for high-capacity cathode materials is currently a hot topic in the field of solid-state batteries(SSBs).Protective surface coatings prevent direct contact between the cathode material and solid electrolyte,thereby inhibiting detrimental interfacial decomposition *** is particularly important when using lithium thiophosphate superionic solid electrolytes,as these materials exhibit a narrow electrochemical stability window,and therefore,are prone to degradation during battery *** we show that the cycling performance of LiNbO_(3)-coated Ni-rich LiNi_(x)Co_(y)Mn_(z)O_(2)cathode materials is strongly dependent on the sample history and(coating)synthesis *** demonstrate that post-treatment in a pure oxygen atmosphere at 350℃results in the formation of a surface layer with a unique microstructure,consisting of LiNbO_(3)nanoparticles distributed in a carbonate *** tested at 45℃and C/5 rate in pellet-stack SSB full cells with Li_(4)Ti_(5)O_(12)and Li_(6)PS_(5)Cl as anode material and solid electrolyte,respectively,around 80%of the initial specific discharge capacity is retained after 200 cycles(~160 mAh·g^(−1),~1.7 mAh·cm^(−2)).Our results highlight the importance of tailoring the coating chemistry to the electrode material(s)for practical SSB applications.

ANCA-Associated Vasculitides—An Update

Anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitides are characterized by destruction of small vessels, granulomatous inflammation of the respiratory tract and necrotizing glomerulonephritis. This review describes the clinical diagnosis and therapy as well as the patho-physiology of ANCA-associated vasculitides with a specific focus on the interplay of ANCAs with activated neutrophils and the deleterious pathophysiological consequences of neutrophil-endothelium interaction.

Logistics Implications of Urban Road Pricing

Urban road pricing schemes are becoming increasingly popular among researchers and politicians as they promise a handle on increasing inner city traffic and economy as well as sustainable improvements for cities facing huge congestion and pollution problems. As in the cases of London and Stockholm, many European cities are going to implement such toll systems, especially as also the European Commission is voting for such pricing schemes in the recent white book on transportation and traffic, This research therefore provides a description of different urban road pricing schemes, their cost implications for city （last mile） transport as well as the decision and management options derived from these schemes for logistics companies. These options are furthermore checked regarding their advantages and disadvantages under the described toll schemes.

有机组分的土水分配系数(Kd)是描述有机组分在地下系统中吸附特征的重要参数。同时,它也是物质运移模拟和环境评价中的主要参数之一。影响Kd的因素可概括为三个方面:土壤性质、有机组分本身特征及水相的物理化学性质。一般而言,对于非极性和弱极性有机组分,土壤中的有机质含量(foc )是影响Kd的最主要因素。但是,对于极性有机组分(POCs), 特别是在土壤有机质含量较低的情况下,土壤中矿物的种类和含量、水化学组分特征(pH、离子力等)经常在吸附过程中起重要作用。实验室内测定Kd的方法包括批实验和柱实验方法。批实验法适用于研究Kd较高情况下的吸附。在Kd较低的情况下,如低有机质土壤对极性有机污染物的吸附,土柱色谱法(SCC)是更适宜的选择。另外,可用土柱色谱法快速了解各种因素对吸附过程的影响,并获取详细的吸附和解吸信息。应用土柱色谱法时应当注意非平衡吸附和可能的柱堵塞问题。很多文献中提到结合柱实验和已有的吸附数据来预测土壤有机碳标准化的分配系数Koc(=Kd/foc)。但是,如果没有考虑吸附中特定的作用过程(如矿物吸附),对极性有机组分Koc的预测将会产生很大的误差。在环境评价中,将从一种土壤测定的Koc 应用到不同性质的土壤中,可能会导致错误的认识。在进行室内实验时。

Controlling Molecular Packing in Aqueous Metallosupramolecular Self-assembly by Ligand Geometry

The coordination geometry of d8 transition metal complexes has been successfully exploited as a tool to tune photophysical properties and self-assembly pathways of supramolecular polymerization processes,with a focus being primarily placed on organic *** such controlled supramolecular and photophysical properties to assemblies in aqueous media by molecular design is,however,still challenging due to the difficulty in programming noncovalent interactions in ***,we tackle this challenge by analyzing the aqueous self-assembly of amphiphilic Pt(II)complexes of different molecular geometry in order to control self-assembly and metal−metal interactions in aqueous *** this end,we have designed two Pt(II)complexes,1 and 2,containing an identical oligophenyleneethynylene(OPE)-based aromatic scaffold that differ in the molecular geometry(linear vs V-shaped)imposed by ligand substitution and studied their comparative self-assembly behavior in aqueous *** though both molecules follow the isodesmic mechanism of self-assembly,their structural difference strongly influences the molecular packing in aqueous media,which in turn impacts the photophysical properties(*** or presence of MMLCT)and the self-assembly *** the molecular geometry for 2 enforces short Pt…Pt contacts driven by an efficient face-to-face stacking of the OPE backbone,the antiparallel packing of 1 with slight translational offset does not allow the formation of short Pt…Pt *** a distinct interplay of interactions for 1 and 2 in aqueous media leads to significant differences in photoluminescence.

Attitudes to Group Assessments: Prospective Psychotherapists’ Experiences of Being Assessed by Fellow Students

Background: The guidance of prospective therapists focused on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is most often made by groups of four students. However, learning therapist skills is a sensitive process that will be affected by the processes which occur within the group. Objective: The aim was to examine prospective psychotherapists’ attitudes to group assessments based on the revised version of the Cognitive Therapy Scale (CTS-R). Method: Participants were 56 students with an average age of 45.65 years (range = 31 - 64). They were recruited from psychotherapy training at the Gothenburg University and the Evidens University College in Sweden. A questionnaire was constructed in which the questions were answered by check on visual analogue scales (VAS). Results: A majority of students consisting of 38 participants (68%) had a very positive approach to group assessments, while a minority of 18 participants (32%) was more negative. Most crucial for how to answer the question of group assessments was whether they considered themselves as fairly evaluated by their student colleagues within the group and whether or not only the supervisor should make the assessments. The view of group assessments (negative or positive) was not related to age, gender, and level of education in CBT or profession. In addition, both groups had a very positive view of both the CTS-R and the supervisors. Conclusion: It was concluded that more studies with the same focus are needed to determine the extent to which the results are generalizable.
