Accuracy of two optical chlorophyll meters in predicting chemical composition and in vitro ruminal organic matter degradability of Brachiaria hybrid,Megathyrsus maximus, and Paspalum atratum

The objective of this study was to determine the accuracy and reliability of 2 optical chlorophyll meters:FieldScout CM 1,000 NDVI and Yara N-Tester, in predicting neutral detergent fibre(NDF), acid detergent fibre(ADF), acid detergent lignin(ADL), acid detergent insoluble nitrogen(ADIN) and in vitro ruminal organic matter degradability(IVOMD) of 3 tropical grasses. Optical chlorophyll measurements were taken at 3 stages(4, 8 and 12 weeks) of regrowth in Brachiaria hybrid, and Megathyrsus maximus and at 6 and 12 weeks of regrowth in Paspalum atratum(cv. Ubon). Optical chlorophyll measurements showed the highest correlation(r = 0.57 to 0.85) with NDF concentration. The FieldScout CM 1,000 NDVI was better than the Yara N-Tester in predicting NDF(R^2 = 0.70) and ADF(R^2 = 0.79) concentrations in Brachiaria hybrid and NDF(R^2 = 0.79) in M. maximus. Similarly, FieldScout CM 1,000 NDVI produced better estimates of 24 h IVOMD(IVOMD_(24 h)) in Brachiaria hybrid(R^2 = 0.81) and IVOMD_(48 h) in Brachiaria hybrid(R^2 = 0.65) and M. maximus(R^2 = 0.75). however, these prediction models had relatively low concordance correlation coefficients, i.e., CCC >0.90, but random errors were the main source of bias. It was,therefore, concluded that both optical chlorophyll meters were poor and unreliable predictors of ADIN and ADL concentrations. Overall, the FieldScout CM 1,000 NDVI shows potential to produce useful estimates of IVOMD_(24h) and ADF in Brachiaria hybrid and IVOMD_(48 h) and NDF concentrations in M. maximus.

CNB-001 reduces paraplegia in rabbits following spinal cord ischemia

Spinal cord ischemia associated with trauma and surgical procedures including thoraco-abdominal aortic aneurysm repair and thoracic endovascular aortic repair results in devastating clinical deficits in patients. Because spinal cord ischemia is inadequately treated, we studied the effects of [4-((1 E)-2-(5-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxystyryl-)-1-phenyl-1 h-pyrazoyl-3-yl) vinyl)-2-methoxy-phenol)](CNB-001), a novel curcumin-based compound, in a rabbit SCI model. CNB-001 is known to inhibit human 5-lipoxygenase and 15-lipoxygenase and reduce the ischemia-induced inflammatory response. Moreover, CNB-001 can reduce the level of oxidative stress markers and potentiate brain-derived neurotrophic factor and brain-derived neurotrophic factor receptor signaling. The Tarlov scale and quantal analysis technique results revealed that CNB-001 administered as an intravenous dose(bolus) 30 minutes prior to spinal cord ischemia improved the behaviors of female New Zealand White rabbits. The improvements were similar to those produced by the uncompetitive N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor antagonist memantine. At 48 hours after aortic occlusion, there was a 42.7% increase(P hemia duration(n = 14) for rabbits treated with CNB-001(n = 16), and a 72.3% increase for rabbits treated with the positive control memantine(P hicle-treated ischemic rabbits(n = 22). CNB-001 is a potential important novel treatment for spinal cord ischemia induced by aortic occlusion. All experiments were approved by the CSMC Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee(IACUC #4311) on November 1,2012.

Mode-Locked Thulium Ytterbium Co-Doped Fiber Laser with Graphene Oxide Paper Saturable Absorber

A mode-locked thulium ytterbium co-doped fiber laser （TYDFL） is proposed and demonstrated by using a commercial graphene oxide （GO） paper as saturable absorber （SA）. The GO paper is sandwiched between two fiber ferrules and incorporates a ring laser cavity to generate soliton pulse train operating at 1942.0nm at a threshold multimode pump power as low as 1.8 W. The mode-locked TYDFL has a repetition rate of 22.32 Mhz and the calculated pulse width of 1.1 ns. Even though the SA has a low damage threshold, the easy fabrication of GO paper should promote its potentiM application in ultrafast photonics.

Mutations around interferon sensitivity-determining region:A pilot resistance report of hepatitis C virus 1b in a hong Kong population

AIM： To explore mutations around the interferon sensitivity-determining region （ISDR） which are associated with the resistance of hepatitis C virus lb （hCV-lb） to interferon-α treatment. METhODS： Thirty-seven hCV-lb samples were obtained from hong Kong patients who had completed the combined interferon-α/ribavirin treatment for more than one year with available response data. Nineteen of them were sustained virological responders, while 18 were non-responders. The amino acid sequences of the extended ISDR （eISDR） covering 64 amino acids upstream and 67 amino acids downstream from the previously reported ISDR were analyzed. RESULTS： One amino acid variation （I2268V, P = 0.023） was significantly correlated with treatment outcome in this pilot study with a limited number of patients, while two amino acid variations （R2260h, P = 0.05 and $2278T, P = 0.05） were weakly associated with treat- ment outcome. The extent of amino acid variations within the ISDR or eISDR was not correlated with treat- ment outcome as previously reported. CONCLUSION： Three amino acid mutations near but outside of ISDR may associate with interferon treatment resistance of hCV-lb patients in hong Kong.

Enhanced enzymatic removal of anthracene by the mangrove soil-derived fungus,Aspergillus sydowii BPOI

The present study investigated the efficiency of Aspergillus sydowii strain bpol(GenBank Accession Number:MK373021)in the removal of anthracene(100 mg/L).Optimal degradation efficiency(98.7%)was observed at neutral ph,temperature(30℃),biomass weight(2 g)and salinity(0.2%w/v)within 72 *** enzyme analyses revealed 131%,107%,and 89%induction in laccase,lignin peroxidase,and manganese peroxidase respectively during anthracene ***,the degradation efficiency(99.8%)and enzyme induction were significantly enhanced with the addition of 100 mg/L of citric acid and glucose to the *** varying anthracene concentrations(100-500 mg/L),the degradation rate constants(K1)peaked with increasing concentration of anthracene while the half-life(t1/2)decreases with increase in anthracene *** of fit(R2=0.976 and 0.982)was observed when the experimental data were subjected to Langmuir and Temkin models respectively which affirmed the monolayer and heterogeneous nature exhibited by *** cells during *** distinct metabolites;anthracene-1,8,9(2h,8ah,9ah)-trione,2,4adihydronaphthalene-1,5-dione,l,3,3a,7a-tetrahydro-2-benzofuran-4,7-dione and 2-hydroxybenzoic acid was obtained through Gas Chromatography-Mass spectrometry(GC-MS).*** exhibited promising potentials in the removal of PAhs.
