Ultrastructure of Diophrys appendiculata and new systematic consideration of the euplotid family Uronychiidae(Protista,Ciliophora)

The ultrastructure of ciliates carries important cytological,taxonomical,and evolutionary signals for these single-celled eukaryotic ***,little ultrastructural data have been accumulated for most ciliate groups with systematic *** the present work,a well-known marine uronychiid,Diophrys appendiculata,was investigated using electron microscopy and a comparison with,and a discussion considering,phylogenetic analyses were *** new findings primarily show that:(i)this species lacks the typical alveolar plate,bears cortical ampule-like extrusomes,and has microtubular triads in the dorsal pellicle,and thus exhibits some ultrastructural features in common with most of its previously studied congeners;(ii)each adoral membranelle before the level of frontal cirrus II/2 contains three rows of kinetosomes and each membranelle after the level of frontal cirrus II/2 contains four rows,which might be related with morphogenesis and could be considered as a distinctive character of Diophrys;(iii)some structural details of the buccal field,such as the extra-pellicular fibrils,pellicle,pharyngeal disks and microtubular sheet,were *** addition,based on the ultrastructural comparison of representatives,we discuss the differentiation between the subfamilies Diophryinae and Uronychiinae.A hypothetical systematic relationship of members in the order Euplotida based on a wide range of data is also provided.

Understanding the influence of electrode material’s morphology on electrochemical behavior is of great significance for the development of rechargeable batteries,however,such studies are often limited by the inability to precisely control the morphology of electrode ***,nanostructured titanium niobium oxides(TiNb_(2)O_(7))with three different morphologies(one-dimensional(1D),two-dimensional(2D),and three-dimensional(3D))were synthesized via a facile microwave-assisted solvothermal *** influence of the morphological dimension of TiNb_(2)O_(7) as electrode material on the electrochemical performance in Li-ion batteries(LIBs)and the underlying correlation with the electrochemical kinetics were studied in detail.2D TiNb_(2)O_(7)(TNO-2D)shows a superior rate capability and cycling stability,associated with improved kinetics for charge transfer and Li-ion diffusion,compared to the 1D and 3D *** X-ray diffraction measurements reveal the structural stability and crystallographic evolution of TNO-2D upon lithiation and delithiation and correlate the Li-ion diffusion kinetics with the lattice evolution during battery charge and ***,carbon-coated TNO-2D achieves enhanced rate capability(205 mAh·g^(-1) at 50 C)and long-term cycling stability(87%after 1000 cycles at 5 C).This work provides insights into the rational morphology design of electrode materials for accelerated charge transfer and enhanced fast-charging capability,pushing forward the development of electrode materials for high-power rechargeable batteries in future energy storage.

Aims habitat loss and fragmentation are the main threats to biodiversity in tropical *** such as shaded cocoa plantations(SCP)provide refuge for tropical forest ***,it is poorly known whether the interspecific ecological interactions are also maintained in these transformed *** evaluated the diversity,reproductive status and photosynthetic metabolism(CAM or C3)of the epiphytic orchid community,and their interactions with host trees(phorophytes)in SCP compared to tropical rainforest(TRF).Methods In southeastern Mexico,three sites each in TRF and SCP were studied,with four 400 m2 plots established at each site to record all orchids and their *** determined the reproductive(adult)or non-reproductive(juvenile)status of each orchid individual in relation to the presence or absence,respectively,of flowers/fruits(or remnants),and assigned the photosynthetic pathway of each orchid species based in *** used true diversity and ecological networks approaches to analyze orchid diversity and orchid–phorophyte interactions,*** Findings In total,607 individuals belonging to 47 orchid species were *** diversity was higher in TRF(19 effective species)than in SCP(11 effective species)and only seven species were shared between the two *** orchid species were more frequent in SCP(53%)than in TRF(14%).At the community level the proportion of non-reproductive and reproductive orchid species and the nested structure and specialization level of the TRF orchid–phorophyte network were maintained in ***,only a subset of TRF epiphytic orchids remains in SCP,highlighting the importance of protecting *** this difference,shaded agroecosystems such as SCP can maintain some of the diversity and functions of natural forests,since the SCP epiphytic orchid community,mainly composed of CAM species,and its phorophytes constitute a nested interaction network,which would confer robustness to d

CAIPIRINhA-accelerated T1w 3D-FLASh for small-bowel MR imaging in pediatric patients with Crohn's disease:assessment of image quality and diagnostic performance

Background:The“Controlled Aliasing In Parallel Imaging Results In higher Acceleration”(CAPIRINhA)technique greatly accelerates T1w 3D fast low angle shot(FLASh)scans while maintaining high image *** studied image quality and conspicuity of inflammatory lesions on CAIPIRINhA-accelerated imaging for pediatric small-bowel magnetic resonance imaging(MRI).Methods:Forty-four consecutive patients(mean 14±3 years,18 girls)underwent small-bowel MRI(MR enterography,MRE)at 1.5 T including diffusion-weighted imaging(DWI),contrast-enhanced CAIPIRINhA 3D-FLASh and standard 2D-FLASh ***’s disease(CD)was confirmed in 26 patients,18 patients served as *** blinded readings were performed for grading of image quality and conspicuity of CD lesions on CAIPIRINhA FLASh and standard FLASh images in comparison to a reference standard comprising imaging and endoscopic ***:CAIPIRINhA FLASh yielded significantly higher image quality with good inter-observer agreement(κ=0.68)and showed better visual delineation in 40%of the assessed bowel lesions,as compared to standard *** was full agreement for identification of CD patients between CAIPIRINhA and standard *** FLASh detected two small-bowel lesions that were not seen on standard *** revealed additional inflammatory lesions inconspicuous on contrast-enhanced *** showed an overall diagnostic accuracy of 93%.Conclusion:We present first evidence that CAIPIRINhA greatly accelerates T1w imaging in paediatric MRE without trade-off in image quality or lesion conspicuity and is thus preferable to standard FLASh imaging.

Protocruzia,a highly ambiguous ciliate(Protozoa;Ciliophora):Very likely an ancestral form for heterotrichea,Colpodea or Spirotrichea? With reevaluation of its evolutionary position based on multigene analyses

The ciliate genus Protocruzia belongs to one of the most ambiguous taxa considering its systematic position,possibly as a member of the classes heterotrichea,Spirotrichea or Karyorelictea,which is tentatively placed into Spirotrichea in Lynn’s 2008 *** test these hypotheses,multigene trees(Bayesian inference,evolutionary distance,maximum parsimony,and maximum likelihood) were constructed using the small subunit rRNA(SSU rRNA) gene,internal transcribed spacer 2(ITS2) and a protein coding gene(histone h4).All analyses agree that:(1) four morphotypes of Protocruzia from different geographical origins group together and form a monophyletic clade,which cannot be assigned to any of the eleven described ciliate classes;(2) it is invariably positioned on an isolated branch separated from the class Spirotrichea suggesting that this clade should be clearly removed from Spirotrichea;(3) this leads us to hypothesize that this taxon may indeed represent a lineage on a class *** on the fact that it is,both morphologically and in molecular features,closely related to the heterotrichs,Colpodea and Oligohymenophorea,Protocruziida might be an ancestral form for the subphylum Intramacronucleata in the evolutionary line from the class heterotrichea(subphylum Postciliodesmatophora) to higher taxa.

Rational design of efficient ph-universal hydrogen evolution reaction catalysts to enable large-scale hydrogen production via electrochemical water splitting is of great significance,yet a challenging ***,Ru atoms in the Ru_(2)P structure were replaced with M=Co,Ni,or Mo to produce M_(2-x)Ru_(x)P *** metals show strong site preference,with Co and Ni occupying the tetrahedral sites and Ru the square pyramidal sites of the CoRuP and NiRuP Ru_(2)P-type *** presence of Co or Ni in the tetrahedral sites leads to charge redistribution for Ru and,according to density functional theory calculations,a significant increase in the Ru d-band *** a result,the intrinsic activity of CoRuP and NiRuP increases considerably compared to Ru_(2)P in both acidic and alkaline *** effect is not observed for MoRuP,in which Mo prefers to occupy the pyramidal *** particular,CoRuP shows state-of-the-art activity,outperforming Ru_(2)P with Pt-like activity in 0.5 M h_(2)SO_(4)(η_(10)=12.3 mV;η100=52 mV;turnover frequency(TOF)=4.7 s^(-1)).It remains extraordinarily active in alkaline conditions(η10=12.9 mV;η_(100)=43.5 mV)with a TOF of 4.5 s^(-1),which is 4x higher than that of Ru_(2)P and 10x that of Pt/*** increase in the Co content does not lead to drastic loss of activity,especially in alkaline medium,where,for example,the TOF of Co_(1.9)Ru_(0.1)P remains comparable to that of Ru_(2)P and higher than that of Pt/C,highlighting the viability of the adopted approach to prepare cost-efficient catalysts.

The freshwater species,Euplotes mazeii ***.,and the marine species,***(Dujardin,1841)Diesing,1850 were collected from China and investigated based on their living morphology,ciliary pattern,and small subunit ribosomal RNA(SSU rRNA)gene sequence *** mazeii *** characterized by its small cell size((40-55)μm×(25-35)μm),nine frontoventral cirri,one marginal and two caudal cirri,seven dorsal kineties,and a double-eurystomus type of dorsal silverline *** analyses based on molecular data confirmed the branching position of this new taxa within the genus Euplotes,with 5.01%(84 nucleotides)sequence variation,supporting the identification of a new *** re-examined all described and supposedly conspecific populations and give a review of Euplotes *** has been reported frequently;however,*** sensu Agamaliev,1968 is different from other populations in the number of marginal cirri or the type of silverline system,which suggests there might be a *** SSU rRNA gene sequences of two populations of *** from the studies of Chen et al.(2013)and Pan et al.(2012)differ from each other by more than 135 nucleotides,implying that the identity of the species currently associated with the SSU rRNA gene sequence in molecular databases requires further confirmation.
