Introduction:Lake Naivasha watershed is recognized for its contribution to kenya’s national gross domestic product from the export of horticultural *** horticultural investment downstream depends mainly on the Lake’s *** fresh water lake lacks surface outflow,and its recharge depends on river Malewa flowing from upper catchment in Aberdare ***,unsustainable land use practices in the upper catchment has led to increasing sediment loading and pollution in river Malewa which affects water quality in the Lake *** for Environmental Services(PES)scheme has been initiated as an alternative incentive approach to motivate upstream smallholder farmers adopt sustainable land use practices for conservation of watershed *** paper analyzes willingness to accept pay(WTA)as proxy economic measure of environmental service(ES)value and determines socio-economic factors influencing farmers WTA for watershed *** analyzed the WTA and characterized WTA underlying socio-economic determinants in two PES intervention sites in ***:The objective of this study was to estimate WTA and determine socio-economic factors influencing ***-structured questionnaire was used to collect data from 200 PES farmers through face-to-face *** applied contingent valuation(CV)and logistic regression for data analyses to elicit farmer’s WTA estimates to implement PES farm practices and determine socio-economic factors influencing WTA,***:Results revealed over 90% of respondents were farmers and 60% had primary level of *** household farm size was 2.305 acres and family size was six members on *** recorded a monthly marginal household increase in gross income from kshs.6891.969(US$68.92)before PES to kshs.11,011.48(US$110.12)with PES *** estimated annual lowest and highest WTA for PES farm practices were at kshs.8835(US$88.35)for grass strip and kshs.21,847.500(US$218.48

Effects of hydrogels on Soil Moisture and Growth of <i>Cajanus cajan</i>in Semi Arid Zone of kongelai, West Pokot County

Studies on the effects of hydrogels on soil amendments, moisture conservation and growth of Cajanus cajan in arid and semi-arid lands were carried out. Seedlings of C. cajan were established both in the nursery and in the field with and without hydrogels. In the field, three replications were used with three levels of hydrogels concentration (7 g, 11 g, and 15 g). Control seedlings were established in soils without hydrogels. In the nursery, root collar diameters and heights were measured every two weeks up to eight weeks. Seedlings established without hydrogels in the nursery were transplanted into field soils with none, 7 g, 11 g and 15 g of hydrogels. Root collar diameters and heights were again measured every month for three months. In addition, soil was collected randomly once every month from the base of each seedling and analyzed for soil moisture using standard laboratory procedures. All data were subjected to analysis of variance. The results show that growth in both the height and root collar diameter of the species was significantly different at the three levels of hydrogels. This suggests that use of hydrogels retards plant growth in nursery soils but improves growth in the field. hydrogels increased soil moisture volume from 8.3% to 10% in h15g level of hydrogels under C. cajan after transplanting. It was concluded that hydrogels do not contribute to growth of seedlings in the nursery but they do so after transplanting. hydrogels increase soil moisture in the soil, so they are recommended for use in semi-arid lands to boost the survival and growth of seedlings.

Platelet-monocyte aggregates and other markers of platelet activation were investigated before and after percutaneous coronary intervention(PCI) with abciximab therapy. The study sought to assess the relationship between the level of platelet-monocyte aggregation and increases in cardiac troponin I post coronary intervention. Methods: Blood samples were collected from 40 patients before PCI and 10 min after abciximab administration. These were tested for platelet activation markers by flow cytometry. Cardiac troponin I levels were assayed at baseline and at 24 h post PCI. Results: Compared to healthy controls, patients with coronary artery disease had elevated markers of platelet activation including platelet-monocyte aggregates, P-selectin and PAC- 1(a marker specific for activated glycoprotein IIb/IIIa) prior to PCI. Increased levels of platelet-monocyte aggregates before PCI were associated with increased expression of P-selectin on the platelet surface. Abciximab therapy reduced platelet-monocyte aggregate levels but had no effect on P-selectin expression. The high levels of expression of activated glycoprotein IIb/IIIa(PAC-1) on platelets prior to PCI was reduced with abciximab therapy. Patients with higher levels of platelet-monocyte aggregates prior to PCI were more likely to develop an elevation of cardiac troponin I during the 24 h after PCI. Conclusions: Increased levels of platelet-monocyte aggregates may predict patients at risk for troponin elevation following PCI and identify those most likely to benefit from abciximab.

Very long survival in pediatric cancer between 1944 and 1993

Objective To identify factors associated with very long survival among all cancer cases di agnosed at age 19 years or younger registered by the Cancer Data Service at the University of kansas Medical Center in kansas City, kansas, USA in the 40 year period between 1944 and 1983, with followup to 1993 Methods There were 2720 pediatric patients with 2750 cancers who were studied Forty f our types of cancer were grouped into 11 diagnostic categories Diagnosis years spanned four eras: 1944-1953, 1954-1963, 1964-1973, and 1974-1983 Cases were c ompared u sing specific characteristics and were divided into shortterm and longterm s urvivors with the division generously set at seven years The proportions of t h e longterm survivors were compared by specific characteristics Results Among the diagnostic categories, leukemias were the most common (298%), follow e d by CNS tumors (152%), and hodgkin's disease (90%) Male to female ratio was 43; average age at diagnosis was 883608 years Longterm survivors to tal ed 1148 (417%) Prognosis was better in cases diagnosed in earlier stages and i n later eras Proportion of longterm survivors increased from 187% in era to 526% in era Improvement of survival was statistically significant in mo st diagnostic categories Conclusions This study shows continuing improvement of survival during four consecutive eras for childhood and adolescent cancer Early diagnosis was associated with bett e r survival Unstaged cases decreased over time reflecting progress in diagnost i c techniques Many patients died before seven years after diagnosis Those w ho survived more than seven years had excellent survival Pediatricians can expe c t to participate in the care of these patients long after the original diagnosis and treatment

Background: A prospective, randomized study was performed to determine whether gemcitabine infusion at a low dose (250 mg/m2) is comparable or superior to the standard-dose infusion (1000 mg/m2) in terms of the survival period, clinical benefit, and frequency of adverse effects in patients with advanced pancreatic adenocarcinoma. Methods: Twenty-five patients who were histologically proven to have locally advanced pancreatic cancer or pancreatic cancer with distant metastases were initially enrolled in the present study. They were treated with gemcitabine infusion at either a dose of 1000 mg/m2 over 30 min (the standard regimen) on days 1, 8, and 15 of every 4- week cycle or at a dose of 250 mg/m2 over 30 min every week. Survival time, response rate, time to treatment failure, clinical benefit response, and adverse effects were compared between the two groups. Results: Twenty-one patients received gemcitabine for more than 1 month. The median survival period was 7.2 months for patients who received the low-dose infusion regimen, in contrast to 5.2 months for patients administered the standard-dose infusion regimen. The time to treatment failure was 5.6 months for patients in the low-dose infusion regimen, in contrast to 3.4 months for patients in the standard-dose infusion regimen. There were no significant differences in either survival time or time to treatment failure or clinical benefits between the two groups, but the incidence of adverse reactions in patients administered the low-dose therapy was significantly lower than that in patients receiving the standard-dose therapy (P he standard infusion regimen group experienced more hematologic toxicity than those in the low-dose regimen. Conclusions: These findings suggest that the low-dose gemcitabine infusion regimen can be continuously administered to patients with locally advanced and systemically spreading pancreatic cancer because of its reduced toxicity, resulting in bett
