impact of Pre-Radiotherapy and/or Chemoradiotherapy hemoglobin Level on Response to Treatment in Laryngeal and hypophayrngeal Squamous Cell Carcinoma

Background: Anemia is reported by many studies as an important risk factor for poor locoregional disease control and survival in head and neck carcinoma. We aimed to study the frequency and prognostic effect of low hemoglobin (hb) level in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (hNSCC) before radiotherapy (RT) and/or chemoradiotherapy (CRT). Material and Methods: We retrospectively studied the charts of 86 patients diagnosed with laryngeal and hypopharyngeal SCC in a university hospital in Cairo, Egypt. Based on the World health Organization (WhO), anemia was diagnosed in males at hb levels in females. We examined the hb levels before radiotherapy alone or combined with chemotherapy and its impact on re-sponse to treatment and survival. Results: The median age was 56 years. 75/86 (87.2%) patients were males with performance status1 in 73/86 (84.9%) patients. The median hb level was 13.1 g/dl. The pre-RT/CRT hb level in female patients (n = 11) was 12 g/dl in 7/11 (63.6%) patients. Pre-RT/CRT hb level in male patients was in 31/75 (41.3%) and >13 g/dl in 44/75 (58.7%). Tumor sites were larynx in 77 (89.5%) and hypopharynx in 9 (10.5%) patients. Disease stage 3, 4 was common in 59/86 (68.6%) patients. Thirty-six (41.8%) patients had surgery. 13/86 (15.1%) patients received induction chemotherapy, while 31/86 (36.0%) had concomitant chemoradiotherapy. Radiotherapy was given in 65/86 (75.58%) patients. The mean RT dose was 66 Gy. Non-anemic patients had significant higher inci-dence of complete response (CR) to treatment (p = 0.034). 25.8% of male pa-tients with hb had higher incidence of recurrence (p = 0.036) com-pared to recurrence in 39.5% of male patients with hb > 13 g/dl (p = 0.403). Female patients whether anemic or non-anemic had no recurrence (p = 0.036 and p = 0.403 respectively). The median duration of DFS and OS was 6.52 and 9.33 months respectively. Empirical model for estimating vertical concentration profiles of re-suspended, sediment-associated contaminants

Vertical distribution processes of sediment contaminants in water were studied by flume experiments. Experimental results show that settling velocity of sediment particles and turbulence characteristics are the major hydrodynamic factors impacting distribution of pollutants, especially near the bottom where particle diameter is similar in size to vortex structure. Sediment distribution was uniform along the distance, while contaminant distribution slightly lagged behind the sediment. The smaller the initial sediment concentration was, the more time it took to achieve a uniform concentration distribution for suspended sediment. A contaminants transportation equation was established depending on mass conservation equations. Two mathematical estimation models of pollutant distribution in the overlying water considering adsorption and desorption were devised based on vertical distribution of suspended sediment: equilibrium partition model and dynamic micro-diffusion model. The ratio of time scale between the sediment movement and sorption can be used as the index of the models. When this ratio was large, the equilibrium assumption was reasonable, but when it was small, it might require dynamic micro-diffusion model.

Finite-time stabilization of uncertain non-autonomous chaoticgyroscopes with nonlinear inputs

Gyroscopes are one of the most interesting and everlasting nonlinear nonautonomous dynamical systems that exhibit very complex dynamical behavior such as chaos. in this paper, the problem of robust stabilization of the nonlinear non-autonomous gyroscopes in a given finite time is studied. it is assumed that the gyroscope system is perturbed by model uncertainties, external disturbances, and unknown parameters. Besides, the effects of input nonlinearities are taken into account. Appropriate adaptive laws are proposed to tackle the unknown parameters. Based on the adaptive laws and the finite-time control theory, discontinuous finite-time control laws are proposed to ensure the finite-time stability of the system. The finite-time stability and convergence of the closed-loop system are analytically proved. Some numerical simulations are presented to show the efficiency of the proposed finite-time control scheme and to validate the theoretical results.

The systematics of kinematic moment of inertia J and dynamic moment of inertia J of superdeformed（SD） bands in A -130, 150, 190 mass regions have been studied. We have obtained the values of J^（1） and J^（2）for all the SD bands observed in the A-130, 150, 190 mass regions by using the experimental intraband E2 transition energies. The result of this work includes the variation of J with the product of valence proton and neutron numbers（NpNn）. The phenomenon of band mixing has been observed in the A -130, 150 mass regions and band crossing has been observed in the A-190 mass region. The systematics also includes the variation of J with the product of valence proton and neutron numbers（NpNn）. Evidence of staggering behaviour has been observed in all three A-130, 150 and 190 mass regions. We present for the first time the variation of J^（1）and J^（2）of SD bands in the A-130, 150, 190 mass regions with NpNn.

MEChANiSM ANALYSiS OF ThiCKNESS EFFECT ON MiXED MODE Ⅰ/Ⅱ FRACTURE OF LC4-CS ALUMiNUM ALLOY

Mixed mode Ⅰ/Ⅱ fracture erperiments of LC4-CS aluminum alloy were conductedby using tension--shear specimens with thicknesses of 2, 4, 8 and 14mm. Fracturemechanisms of thickness effect on mixed mode Ⅰ/Ⅱ fracture were first examined fromfracture surface morphology to correlate with the macroscopic fracture behavior andstress state. it is found that specimen thickness has a strong influence on mixed modefracture. As thickness varies from thin to thick the macroscopic fracture surfacesappear the characteristics of plane stress state (2mm, 4mm--thick specimen), three--dimensional stress state (8mm--thick specimens), and plane strain state (14mm--thickspecimens), respectively. The specimens of all kinds of thicknesses are typical of ten-sile type failure under mode Ⅰ loading condition and shear type failure under mode Ⅱloading condition. Two distinct features coexist on the fracture surfaces under mixedmode loading conditions, and the corresponding proportion varies with loading mix-ity. Void--growth processes are the failure mechanism in both predominately tensile-and shears--type fractures. The size and depth of dimples on the fracture surface varygreatly with thickness. Therefore, it is extraordinary necessary to take into accountthe thickness effect when a mixed mode fracture criterion is being established.

Modulating Wnt signaling to improve cell replacement therapy for Parkinson＇s disease

Clinical trials have demonstrated the capacity for dopamine neurons, transplanted ectopicaUy into the striatum, to structurally inte- grate, restore dopamine transmission, and induce long-term functional benefits for Parkinson＇s disease （PD） patients. Despite this proof of principle, a number of limitations have hindered the development of cell replacement therapy over the past 20 years, particu- larly tissue availability, graft survival, and adequate reinnervation of the host brain. With a greater understanding of failure in prior clinical trials, increased knowledge of midbrain dopamine development （now including Wnts）, and the development of pluripotent stem cell technologies, we are better equipped than ever to re-address a number of these challenges. This review summarizes the trials, tribulations, and progress in cell replacement therapy for PD. We discuss the prospects of modulating canonical and non-canon- ical Wnt signalingto improve cell therapy based upon their roles in dopamine neural development and the adult brain. This will include the potential of Wnts to （i） expand fetaUy derived tissue in vitro and foUowing transplantation, （ii） promote the differentiation of pluripotent stem cells, （iii） increase graft integration and restoration of neural circuitry, and finally （iv） enhance graft survival.

Seismic failure modes and seismic safety of hardfill dam

Based on microscopic damage theory and the finite element method, and using the Weibull distribution to characterize the random distribution of the mechanical properties of materials, the seismic response of a typical hardfill dam was analyzed through numerical simulation during the earthquakes with intensities of 8 degrees and even greater. The seismic failure modes and failure mechanism of the dam were explored as well. Numerical results show that the hardfill dam remains at a low stress level and undamaged or slightly damaged during an earthquake with an intensity of 8 degrees. During overload earthquakes, tensile cracks occur at the dam surfaces and extend to inside the dam body, and the upstream dam body experiences more serious damage than the downstream dam body. Therefore, under the seismic conditions, the failure pattern of the hardfill dam is the tensile fracture of the upstream regions and the dam toe. Compared with traditional gravity dams, hardfill dams have better seismic performance and ~reater seismic safety.
