Assessment of dead layers thickness of an hPGe detector after an extended operating period using response surface methodology and Box–Behnken design

Purpose This work aims to study the increase in dead layer thickness of an hPGe N-type detector during its operational period from 2012 to 2018.Methods The dead layer was examined along three Ge-crystal surfaces,such as outer frontal,outer lateral,and inner lateral.These parameters were optimized using response surface methodology(RSM)with a Box–Behnken design(BBD).The Monte Carlo calculations using the GAMOS(Geant4-based Architecture for Medicine-Oriented Simulations)code were performed to evaluate the detector’s efficiency at different values of the inactive germanium layer.Results and conclusion The optimal combination of dead layer thickness has been identified using the desirability function approach,which is a useful tool to optimize multi-response problems.To find the variation in dead layer thickness over the operational period,the optimization procedure was reiterated for both experimental efficiencies measured in 2012 and 2018.The obtained results show that dead layers thickness has increased from 0.6141 mm to 0.7447 mm,0.0803 mm to 2.2721 mm,and 1.5012 mm to 1.6091 mm for the outer frontal,outer lateral,and inner lateral surfaces,respectively.

Rao Algorithms-Based Structure Optimization for heterogeneous Wireless Sensor Networks

The structural optimization of wireless sensor networks is a critical issue because it impacts energy consumption and hence the network’s lifetime.Many studies have been conducted for homogeneous networks,but few have been performed for heterogeneouswireless sensor networks.This paper utilizes Rao algorithms to optimize the structure of heterogeneous wireless sensor networks according to node locations and their initial energies.The proposed algorithms lack algorithm-specific parameters and metaphorical connotations.The proposed algorithms examine the search space based on the relations of the population with the best,worst,and randomly assigned solutions.The proposed algorithms can be evaluated using any routing protocol,however,we have chosen the well-known routing protocols in the literature:Low Energy Adaptive Clustering hierarchy(LEACh),Power-Efficient Gathering in Sensor Information Systems(PEAGSIS),Partitioned-based Energy-efficient LEACh(PE-LEACh),and the Power-Efficient Gathering in Sensor Information Systems Neural Network(PEAGSIS-NN)recent routing protocol.We compare our optimized method with the Jaya,the Particle Swarm Optimization-based Energy Efficient Clustering(PSO-EEC)protocol,and the hybrid harmony Search Algorithm and PSO(hSA-PSO)algorithms.The efficiencies of our proposed algorithms are evaluated by conducting experiments in terms of the network lifetime(first dead node,half dead nodes,and last dead node),energy consumption,packets to cluster head,and packets to the base station.The experimental results were compared with those obtained using the Jaya optimization algorithm.The proposed algorithms exhibited the best performance.The proposed approach successfully prolongs the network lifetime by 71% for the PEAGSIS protocol,51% for the LEACh protocol,10% for the PE-LEACh protocol,and 73% for the PEGSIS-NN protocol;Moreover,it enhances other criteria such as energy conservation,fitness convergence,packets to cluster head,and packets to the base station.

A 56-day feeding period was performed to investigate the possible impacts of dietary nano curcumin(0,50,100,150,and 200 ppm)on the growth,nutrient utilization,non-specific immune parameters,antioxidants in Nile tilapia under chronic low temperature(21.02±0.11◦C).Fishes(n=225;Initial weight=4.39±0.08 g/fish)were randomly stocked at 15 fish/tank for five experimental groups in triplicates.Under low-temperature circumstances,dietary curcumin in nano form showed no notable alteration in growth variable,nutrient efficiency,digestive enzymes efficiency,biometric indices,survival rates,and hematological components.Meanwhile,the serum of fishes with nano curcumin diets under low-temperature stress displayed higher total protein as well as lower glucose,cortisol,and total cholesterol compared with the control group.Moreover,fish fed nano curcumin diets displayed higher lysozyme and bactericidal activities compared to the control group and the best performance was found at dietary nano curcumin level of≥100 ppm.Also,groups fed the basal diet demonstrated the poorest antioxidant capacity,and the best superoxide dismutase(SOD)and glutathione peroxidase(GPx)existed in fish with nano curcumin diets while the best catalase(CAT)efficiency occurred at higher nano curcumin levels≥100 ppm.In addition,higher counts of intestinal microbiota in terms of total bacterial count(TBC),total yeast and molds count(TYMC),and coliform were noticed in fish consumed the basal diet compared to groups fed on nano curcumin diets.In conclusion,incorporating nano curcumin at a level of≥100 mg/kg diet(particularly at 150 mg/kg)improved a non-specific immune response,antioxidant,and healthier gastrointestinal microbiota in Nile tilapia under chronic low-temperature stress.

Nonlinear boundary control problem of hyperbolic systems

The paper is devoted to the study of optimal control of a hyperbolic system,where the control enters the system through the boundary.The hyperbolic system is the wave equation on a smooth and open domain,where the boundary condition involves the normal derivative at the boundary of z,the time derivative of z times a constant k,and a nonlinear term control.here,z is the state and u is the control,satisfying some boundedness condition depending on k.The functional cost consists of the energy and the difference between the solution of the system at final time,and a desired state in L2-norm.For a closed convex set,we prove the existence of an optimal control that minimises the cost functional using a priori estimates.Then,using the differentiability of the cost functional with respect to the control,we establish the characterisation by deriving necessary conditions that an optimal control must satisfy.A numerical approach is successfully illustrated by simulations.

Facies development and sedimentology of the Middle Miocene carbonates of the Raghama Formation, northeastern Saudi Arabia

Ragahama Formation comprises a siliciclastic continental deposits followed by marine carbonates, representing prograding alluvial fans from adjacent high hinterlands seaward into lagoons and fringing reef environments. The present work aimed to document the facies development and sedimentology of the Raghama carbonates exposed along the eastern coastal plain of the Red Sea, northwestern Saudi Arabia. Four stratigraphic sections were measured and sampled(D1–D4) and thin sections and major and trace element analyses were prepared and applied for petrographic and geochemical approaches. The carbonates were subdivided into three successive fore-reef, reef-core, and back-reef depositional facies. Sandy stromatolitic boundstone, microbial laminites, dolomitic ooidal grainstone, bioclastic coralline algal wackestone, sandy bioclastic wackestone, and coral boundstones were the reported microfacies types. Petrographic analysis reveals that the studied carbonates were affected by dissolution, dolomitization, and aggrading recrystallization, which affects both the original micrite matrix and grains or acts as fracture and veinlet filling leading to widespread vuggy and moldic porosity. No evidence of physical compaction, suggesting rapid lithification and recrystallization during early diagenesis and prior to substantial burial and intensive flushing by meteoric waters. Most of the original microstructure of corals were leached and destructed. This is indicated by the higher depletion in Sr and Ca levels and increase in Mg,Na, Fe, and Mn levels, especially in section D1, in comparison with the worldwide carbonates.

Ethidium bromide(EtBr)is one of the contaminants recorded in aquatic environments whose effects have been investigated;however,there is still limited knowledge about its remediation.This study examined the potential protective effects of Spirulina platensis(SP)against the effects of EtBr toxicity in the Nile tilapia(Oreochromis niloticus)fry.Fry were divided to five groups,viz.,a control and four treatment groups of low-dose EtBr(10μg/L),low-dose EtBr with SP(10μg/L EtBr+200 mg/L SP),high-dose EtBr(100μg/L),and high-dose EtBr with SP(100μg/L EtBr+200 mg/L SP);the exposure period was 2 weeks.Low and high doses of EtBr induced alterations in some hematological,biochemical,and histopathological parameters.Necrotic hepatocytes,degenerated area,vacuolated hepatocytes,pyknotic nuclei,constricted and dilated blood sinusoids,and infiltration of inflammatory cells were observed.Lipid peroxidation concentration was not significantly different in groups exposed to low doses of EtBr and EtBr with SP,but it was increased in groups exposed to high doses of EtBr and EtBr with SP,compared with the control group.After feeding with SP,most histological and histochemical parameters restored to normal values.Therefore,SP may possess the ability to preserve the structural integrity of the hepatic and renal membranes.

This study reports the analytical solution for a generalized rotational pendulum system with gallows and periodic excited forces.The multiple scales method(MSM)is applied to solve the proposed problem.Several types of rotational pendulum oscillators are studied and talked about in detail.These include the forced damped rotating pendulum oscillator with gallows,the damped standard simple pendulum oscillator,and the damped rotating pendulum oscillator without gallows.The MSM first-order approximations for all the cases mentioned are derived in detail.The obtained results are illustrated with concrete numerical examples.The first-order MSM approximations are compared to the fourth-order Runge-Kutta(RK4)numerical approximations.Additionally,the maximum error is estimated for the first-order approximations obtained through the MSM,compared to the numerical approximations obtained by the RK4 method.Furthermore,we conducted a comparative analysis of the outcomes obtained by the used method(MSM)and he-MSM to ascertain their respective levels of precision.The proposed method can be applied to analyze many strong nonlinear oscillatory equations.

Developing a biomaterial for wound healing applications is still a challenge.herein,dysprosium oxide（Dy2O3）,aluminum oxide（Al2O3）,and graphene oxide（GO） were embedded in cast films based on polycaprolactone（PCL） to be examined for wound dressing usage.Different techniques were used to characterize the fabricated films including X-ray diffraction（XRD）,Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy（FTIR）,Raman,and scanning electron microscopy（SEM）,besides their biological activity.The thermogravimetric analysis（TGA） exhibits high thermal stability as the scaffold weight decreases slightly to 98.6% after raising the temperature from room temperature to 280℃.The cell viability was investigated and it is shown that the viable cells grow up to approximately 93% at 75 μg/mL.Meanwhile,the cell attachment shows excellent behavior as the cells attach on most of the surface of the modified PCL which shows high biocompatibility.

Modeling environmental sensitivity and risk assessment of PAhs in sediments along two marine coastal areas in Egypt

Modeling the environmental sensitivity index(ESI)is vital in the planning and management processes,especially along the coastal areas.The main objectives of the study were to define the main sources of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAhs),establish an ESI model,and measure the risk of PAhs on humans and the environment using various equations.The methodology of the research involved analyzing PAhs according to the EPA 550 methodology in sediments of the coastline in two important coastline areas in Egypt,namely the Gulf of Suez and the Mediterranean Sea,modeling the sensitivity of PAhs using ArcGIS 10.5 by integrating different physical,biological,and land use/cover factors,identifying the sources,and performing a risk assessment.Nine sediment samples were collected from each area.The produced sensitivity map could explain the highly sensitive areas along the Mediterranean Sea and Gulf of Suez coastlines(especially areas that were near drains'outlets,industrial sites,and sea ports).The highest mean PAh concentrations were Acenaphthylene and Fluorine in the Mediterranean Sea and Suez Gulf,respectively.It's obvious that the individual PAh concentrations were within the ERL,ERM,and Pel threshold limits,indicating no adverse biological impacts.The ratios of BaA/BaA+Chy,Flu/Flu+Py,and Ant/Ant+Phe gave an indication that most PAh sources were petrogenic(63.64%)and others(36.36%)were from petroleum combustion.The principle component analysis(PCA)indicated a diverse correlation among the isomer ratios and LU/LC activities.The carcinogenic risk values were in the very low category(h children and adults.The most significant contributors to carcinogenicity were IP and BkFlu in the Mediterranean Sea and Suez Gulf,respectively.Increasing sources of carbon in seawater,especially with climatic change,may impact the aquatic environment and have impacts on organisms and coral reefs.So it is highly recommended to keep shorelines and seawater free of oil spillage activities along the coastal areas or take actions
