Peripheral nerve injuries induce a severe motor and sensory deficit. Since the availability of autologous nerve transplants for nerve repair is very limited, alternative treatment strategies are sought, including the use of tubular nerve guidance conduits(tNGcs). however, the use of tNGcs results in poor functional recovery and central necrosis of the regenerating tissue, which limits their application to short nerve lesion defects(typically shorter than 3 cm). Given the importance of vascularization in nerve regeneration, we hypothesized that enabling the growth of blood vessels from the surrounding tissue into the regenerating nerve within the tNGc would help eliminate necrotic processes and lead to improved regeneration. In this study, we reported the application of macroscopic holes into the tubular walls of silk-based tNGcs and compared the various features of these improved silk^(+) tNGcs with the tubes without holes(silk^(–) tNGcs) and autologous nerve transplants in an 8-mm sciatic nerve defect in rats. Using a combination of micro-computed tomography and histological analyses, we were able to prove that the use of silk^(+) tNGcs induced the growth of blood vessels from the adjacent tissue to the intraluminal neovascular formation. A significantly higher number of blood vessels in the silk^(+) group was found compared with autologous nerve transplants and silk^(–), accompanied by improved axon regeneration at the distal coaptation point compared with the silk^(–) tNGcs at 7 weeks postoperatively. In the 15-mm(critical size) sciatic nerve defect model, we again observed a distinct ingrowth of blood vessels through the tubular walls of silk^(+) tNGcs, but without improved functional recovery at 12 weeks postoperatively. Our data proves that macroporous tNGcs increase the vascular supply of regenerating nerves and facilitate improved axonal regeneration in a short-defect model but not in a critical-size defect model. 中国的植物多样性保护行动虽然提升了公众对多样性的认识，但这些努力往往未能深入到理解植物多样性演化及其保护的深层意义。从演化的视角进行植物多样性宣传教育，有利于促进对多样性的综合理解，增进对多样性保护的认可。然而，现有资料多集中于物种的识别、鉴定与分类，缺乏从生物演化角度对植物多样性进行系统性介绍的内容。本文介绍了一个具有全球影响力的科教资料案例——由美裔德国植物学家Theodor c. h. cole发起的植物系统发生海报(Plant Phylogeny Posters)项目。该项目通过整合最新的系统与演化植物学研究成果，以系统发生为线索介绍植物多样性及其亲缘关系，旨在利用系统发生树所蕴含的丰富演化思想内涵，启发读者理解植物多样性与演化。海报以系统发生树结合植物类群的形态、地理分布、物种数量等数据信息，直观展示了多个分类等级的重要类群的演化历史。在数十所大学和科研机构的45位研究人员的努力下， 70张系统发生海报已被翻译成中文，并向所有人免费开放获取。这一科教项目有望为增进公众深入理解植物多样性及其保护行动提供宝贵的资源和帮助。

Formation of TiN Grid on NiTi by Laser Gas Nitriding for Improving Wear Resistance in hanks' Solution

Laser gas nitriding （LGN） is a common surface modification method to enhance the wear resistance of titanium （Ti） alloys, which are known to have poor tribological properties. In the present study, a titanium nitride （TIN） grid network was fabricated on the surface of nickel titanium （NiTi） by LGN. The laser processing parameters were selected to achieve nitriding without surface melting and hence to＇maintain a smooth surface finish. The characteristics of the grid-nitrided samples were investigated by scanningelectron microscopy, X-ray diffractometry, optical microscopy, 2-D profilometry, contact angle measurements and nanoindentation. The wear resistance of the nitrided samples was evaluated using reciprocating wear test against ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene （UhMWPE） in hanks＇ solution. The results indicate that the wear rates of the grid-nitrided samples and the UhMWPE counter-body in the wear pair are both significantly reduced. The decrease in wear rates can be attributed to the combination of a hard TiN grid and a soft NiTi substrate. In hanks＇ solution, the higher hydrophilicity of the nitrided samples also contributes to the better performance in wear test against hydrophobic UhMWPE.

In the squeeze casting process, loaded high pressure （over approximately 200 MPa） and high temperature influence the thermo-mechanical behavior and performance of the used metal mold. Therefore, to safely maintain the metal molds, the thermo-mechanical characteristics （temperature and thermal stress） of metal mold in the squeeze casting must be investigated. In this paper, temperature and thermal stress distribution of steel mold in squeeze casting process were investigated by using a three-dimensional non-steady heat conduction analysis and a three-dimensional thermal elastic-plastic analysis considering temperature-dependent thermophysical and mechanical properties of the steel mold.

This study examines the roles of soil-structure interaction （SSI）, higher modes, and damping in a base-isolated structure built on multiple layers of soil overlying a half space. closed-form solutions for the entire system, including a superstructure, seismic isolator, and numerous soil layers overlying a half-space, were obtained. The formulations obtained in this study simply in terms of well-known frequencies and mechanical impedance ratios can explicitly interpret the dynamic behavior of a base-isolated structure interacting with multiple soil layers overlying a half-space. The key factors influencing the performance of the isolation system are the damping ratio of the isolator and the ratio of the natural frequency of the fixed-base structure to that of the isolated structure by assuming that the superstructure moves as a rigid body. This study reveals that higher damping in the base isolator is unfavorable to higher mode responses that usually dominate the responses of the superstructure and that the damping mechanism plays an important role in transmitting energy in addition to absorbing energy. It is also concluded that it is possible to design a soft soil layer as an isolation system for isolating vibration energy.

current structural analysis software programs offer few if any applicable device-specifi c hysteresis rules or nonlinear elements to simulate the precise mechanical behavior of a multiple friction pendulum system(MFPS) with numerous sliding *** on the concept of subsystems,an equivalent series system that adopts existing nonlinear elements with parameters systematically calculated and mathematically proven through rigorous derivations is *** aim is to simulate the characteristics of sliding motions for an MFPS isolation system with numerous concave sliding interfaces without prior knowledge of detailed information on the mobilized forces at various sliding *** MFPS with numerous concave sliding interfaces and one articulated or rigid slider located between these interfaces is divided into two subsystems: the fi rst represents the concave sliding interfaces above the slider,and the second represents those below the *** equivalent series system for the entire system is then obtained by connecting those for each subsystem in *** equivalent series system is validated by comparing numerical results for an MFPS with four sliding interfaces obtained from the proposed method with those from a previous study by Fenz and ***,these numerical results demonstrate that an MFPS isolator with numerous concave sliding interfaces,which may have any number of sliding interfaces,is a good isolation device to protect structures from earthquake damage through appropriate designs with controllable mechanisms.

The tensile creep deformation and damage evolution in a Ni-base superalloy at 900℃/170MPa were investigated. At the first creep stage, abnormal creep occured due to the resolution of fine particles, and the deformation initiated from grain boundary areas. It is evident that nearly all of the dislocations were in γ matrix channels in form of dislocation pairs and the dislocations were impeded at γ/γ' interfaces, thus the dislocation networks developed deformation. At the steady creep stage, impeded dislocations atγ/γ' interfaces climbed over γ' phases by diffusion-dominant mechanism. At the last creep stage, voids were formed around carbides at grain boundary which leaded to accumulated damage and caused creep rate accelerated. With the dislocation networks being broken, the voids connected and grew into micro-cracks gradually. Finally the cracks propagated along grain boundary area and resulted in failure.
