Th. dispersion.of mon.morillon.te （MMT） in.vin.lester for preparin. n.n.clay/vin.lester gel coat was reported. Two sets of MMT/vin.lester specimen., n.mely Type I an. Type 2, were prepared for comparative studies. Type I specimen. were prepared usin. ultrason.cation.on.y, an. Type 2 specimen. were prepared usin. both.ultrason.cation.an. twin.screw extrusion. Accordin. to XRD an. TEM results, Type 2 specimen. sh.wed lower levels of n.n.clay agglomeration.an. h.gh.r levels o! exfoliation. DSC results sh.wed th.t th. glass tran.ition.temperatures of Type 2 specimen. are h.gh.r th.n.th.se of Type 1 specimen.. TGA results sh.wed th.t th. residual weigh. of 4 wt.% MMT/vin.lester of Type 1 was 7.38%, wh.le th. correspon.in. value of Type 2 was 13,5%, in.icatin. lower th.rmal degradation.in.th. latter. MMTt vin.lester/glass an. MMT/vin.lester/carbon.specimen. were fabricated an. tested for mech.n.cal an. fire retardation.beh.viours. Type 2 based n.n.composite lamin.tes sh.wed greater values of ultimate ten.ile stren.th. flexural stren.th. in.erlamin.r sh.ar stren.th. impact stren.th. h.rizon.al burn.n. rate, an. vertical burn.n. rate th.n.Type 1 based lamin.tes.
