Previous studies h.ve sh.wn th.t individuals responded preferentially to th. mark of th. top-scent donor relative to th.t of th. bottom-scent donor of an over-mark. h.wever, terrestrial mammals are likely to encounter over-marks consisting of th. scent marks of more th.n two same-sex conspecifics in th. intersections of runways, near th. nests of sexually receptive female conspecifics, and inside and along th. borders of th. territories of conspecifics. We determined h.w meadow voles, Microtus pennsylvanicus, respond to th. marks of th. top-, middle-, and bottom-scent donors of an over-mark. We tested th. h.poth.sis th.t voles exposed to an over-mark will respond preferentially to th. scent marks th.t were deposited more recently, th. scent marks th.t were on top or near th. top of th. over-mark, compared to th. scent marks th.t were deposited earlier or near th. bot- tom of th. over-mark. Voles spent more time investigating th. mark of th. top-scent donor th.n th.t of th. eith.r th. middle- or bottom-scent donor. h.wever, males but not female voles spent more time investigating th. middle-scent mark th.n th. bot- tom-scent mark. We also tested th. h.poth.sis th.t voles evaluate and respond to over-marks differently from single scent marks. Voles spent more time investigating th. marks of th. top-, middle-, and bottom-scent donors compared to scent marks th.t were not part of th. over-mark. Voles can distinguish.among th. overlapping scent marks of th.ee scent donors and sex differences exist in th. values th.y appear to attach.to each.of th.se scent marks [Current Zoology 57 （4）： 441-448, 2011 ].

In order to understand th. transport and h.mification processes of dissolved organic matter（DOM） with.n sediments of a semi-arid floodplain at Rifle,Colorado,fluorescence excitation–emission matrix（EEM） spectroscopy,h.mification index（h.X） and specific UV absorbance（SUVA） at 254 nm were applied for ch.racterizing depth.and seasonal variations of DOM *** revealed th.t late spring snowmelt leach.d relatively fresh.DOM from plant residue and soil organic matter down into th. deeper vadose zone（VZ）.More h.mified DOM is preferentially adsorbed by upper VZ sediments,wh.le non-or lessh.mified DOM was transported into th. deeper ***,DOM at all depth. undergoes rapid biological h.mification process evidenced by th. products of microbial by-product-like（i.e.,tyrosine-like and tryptoph.n-like） matter in late spring and early summer,particularly in th. deeper VZ,resulting in more h.mified DOM（e.g.,fulvic-acid-like and h.mic-acid-like substances） at th. end of *** indicates th.t DOM transport is dominated by spring snowmelt,and DOM h.mification is controlled by microbial degradation,with.seasonal *** is expected th.t th.se relatively simple spectroscopic measurements（e.g.,EEM spectroscopy,h.X and SUVA） applied to depth.and temporally-distributed pore-water samples can provide useful insigh.s into transport and h.mification of DOM in oth.r subsurface environments as well.

Th. study of α4β2 nicotinic receptors h.s provided new indications in th. treatment of pain. Efforts h.ve been made to explore new α4β2 nicotinic receptor agonists, including TC-2559, as antinociceptive drugs. In th.s study, we discovered a set of novel epibatidine analogs with.strong binding affinities to th. α4β2 nicotinic receptors. Among th.se compounds, C-159, C-163, and C-9515 attenuated formalin-induced nociceptive responses in mice; C-9515 caused th. most potent analgesic effect, wh.ch.was blocked by mecamylamine, a non-selective nicotinic receptor antagonist. Furth.rmore, C-9515 potently inh.bited ch.onic constriction injury(CCI)-induced neuropath.c pain in rats, wh.ch.was sensitive to Dh.E, a selective α4β2 subtype antagonist,indicating th.t its analgesic effect was mediated by th. activation of th. α4β2 nicotinic receptors. In conclusion, th. epibatidine analog C-9515 was found to be a potent α4β2 nicotinic receptor agonist with.potent analgesic function, wh.ch.demonstrated potential for th. furth.r exploration of its druggability.

Crystal and ph.se morph.logies and structures determined by self-organization of crystalline-amorph.us diblockcopolymers, crystallization of th. crystallizable blocks, and vitrification of th. amorph.us blocks are reviewed th.ough.asystematic study on a series of poly(eth.lene oxide)-b-polystyrene (PEO-b-PS) diblock copolymers. On th. base ofcompetitions among th.se th.ee processes, molecular and supramolecular ordering in confined environments can beinvestigated. In a concentration-fluctuation-induced disordered (D_(CF)) diblock copolymer, th. competition between crystalli-zation of th. PEO blocks and vitrification of th. PS blocks is momtored by time-resolved simultaneous small angle X-rayscattering (SAXS) and wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) tech.iques. In th. case of T_ch., th. crystallization of th.PEO blocks is observed to be confined with.n th. bicontinuous D_(CF) ph.se due to th. rapid vitrification of th. PS-rich.*** crystallization rate, crystal melting beh.vior, and crystallinity results furth.r confirm th. competition betweencrystallization and vitrification at different temperatures. In an ordered lamellar PEO-b-PS diblock copolymer, th. crystalli-zation of th. PEO blocks is completely confined with.n th. ordered lamellae due to rapid vitrification of th. PS layers asobserved by time-resolved SAXS and WAXD experiments. From th. combined two-dimensional SAXS and WAXDmeasurements, th. crystal orientation with.n th. confined lamellar geometry is found parallel to th. lamellar surface normalwh.n it is isoth.rmally crystallized at 35℃. In an ordered cylindrical PEO-b-PS sample, th. crystallization of th. PEO blocksis also observed to be confined with.n th. ordered cylinders because of rapid vitrification of th. PS matrix. Th. crystalorientation with.n th. confined cylinders is found perpendicular to th. cylinder axis as it is crystallized at 35℃.
