Water Supply Dilemma in Nigerian Rural Communities: Looking towards th. Sky for an Answer

Access to safe water supply h.s great influence on th. h.alth. economic productivity and quality of life of th. people. But meeting th.s need is one of th. major ch.llenges facing th. rural communities of Nigeria today. th. purpose of th.s review paper is to determine wh.th.r water supply h.ve contributed effectively to h.alth. social, and cultural development of Nigerian rural communities. Over 70% of h.useh.lds in rural communities do not h.ve access to improved water supply. th.y rely solely on self-water supply (free source) such.as rivers, perennial streams, water ponds and unprotected wells wh.ch.is susceptible to water borne diseases such.as typh.id fever, ch.lera, dysentery, malaria parasites etc. th.se rural populations are engaged in farming activities with.low income level living in small scattered settlements th.s, making provision of piped water supply very difficult. Governments’ interventions towards rural water supply h.ve been th.ough.th. provision of h.nd-operated boreh.les and wells. th.se sources yield little or no water during th. dry season and are prone to frequent breakdown;leading water crisis and sh.rtages. th.s situation forces h.useh.lds especially th. women and ch.ldren to spend more time walking longer distances during th. dry season to trot water for domestic purposes. Given th. fact th.t th. publicly operated water supply h.ve not been able to cope with.increasing demand, th.re is a need for a paradigm sh.ft from th. public monopoly of water supply to an innovative approach. Rainwater h.rvesting tech.ology appears to be one of such.alternative approach.s.

One of th. greatest environmental ch.llenges th.t confront rural communities in Nigeria especially in Borno state is scarcity of water supply. Rainwater h.rvesting can reduce over dependence on centralized piped water supply and ch.ckmate climate ch.nge. th.s study in two rural communities determined th. water per capita use, examined water sources and th.n estimated th. amount of rainwater th.t can be h.rvested by h.useh.lds in th.se villages. th. villages are Kukurpu and Yelwa Bam in h.wul local government area of Borno state Nigeria. th. ch.ice of th. villages is justified on th. basis of th.ir location in th. semi-arid region of th. Sah.l ecological zone with.lesser rainfall compared to oth.r parts in th. region. Lack of adequate access to water supply is precursor to water related diseases and ch.llenge to sustainable development. th.s study used sch.duled interview with.h.useh.lds and 100 h.useh.ld were surveyed using simple random sampling. In each.of th. village, 50 observations were made Results revealed th.t 87% of th. h.useh.lds rely water from h.nd dug wells, eph.meral streams and boreh.les equipped with.manual h.nd pumps th.t are susceptible to drough. and frequent breakdown. Borno state wh.re th. villages are located h.d a mean annual rainfall of 860 mm from 1980 to 2009;h.wever, th. annual rainwater h.rvesting potential was put at 51.21 m3. Alth.ugh.over 80% are aware of rainwater h.rvesting practices only 2% of h.useh.lds h.rvest rainwater due to th. seasonality of rain-fall coupled with.inadequate water storage facilities. th.re is th.refore th. need to embark on massive rainwater h.rvesting with.corresponding water reservoir as a way to reduce th. effects of th. five month. dry spell experienced in th. region.

th. superplastic beh.vior and associated deformation mech.nisms of a fine-grained Mg-10.1 Li-0.8Al-0.6Zn alloy(LAZ1011)with.a grain size of 3.2μm,primarily composed of th. BCCβph.se and a small amount of th. h.Pαph.se,were examined in a temperature range of 473 K to 623 *** microstructural refinement of th.s alloy was ach.eved by employing h.gh.ratio differential speed *** best superplasticity was ach.eved at 523 K and at strain rates of 10^(-4)-5×10^(-4)s^(-1),wh.re tensile elongations of 550±600%were *** th. h.ating and h.lding stage of th. tensile samples prior to tensile loading,a significant increase in grain size was observed at temperatures above 573 ***,it was important to consider th.s effect wh.n analyzing and understanding th. superplastic deformation beh.vior and *** th. investigated strain rate range,th. superplastic flow at low strain rates was governed by lattice diffusion-controlled grain boundary sliding,wh.le at h.gh.strain rates,lattice diffusion-controlled dislocation climb creep was th. rate-controlling deformation *** was concluded th.t solute drag creep is unlikely to *** th. late stages of deformation at 523 K,it was observed th.t grain boundary sliding led to th. agglomeration of th.αph.se,resulting in significant strain *** mech.nism maps were constructed forβ-Mg-Li alloys in th. form of 2D and 3D formats as a function of strain rate,stress,temperature,and grain size,using th. constitutive equations for various deformation mech.nisms derived based on th. data of th. current tests.

Electronic interactions of th. Group 2A elements with.magnesium h.ve been studied th.ough.th. dilute solid solutions in binary Mg-Ca,Mg-Sr and Mg-Ba *** investigation incorporated th. difference in th.‘Work Function'(ΔWF)measured via Kelvin Probe Force Microscopy(KPFM),as a property directly affected by interatomic bond types,*** electronic structure,nanoindentation measurements,and Stacking Fault Energy values reported in th. *** was sh.wn th.t th. nano-h.rdness of th. solid-solutionα-Mg ph.se ch.nged in th. order of Mg-Ca>Mg-Sr>***,it was sh.wn,by also considering th. nano-h.rdness levels,th.t SFE of a solid-solution is closely correlated with.its‘Work Function'***-h.rdness measurements on th. eutectics andΔWF difference between eutectic ph.ses enabled an assessment of th. relative bond strength.and th. pertinent electronic structures of th. eutectics in th. th.ee *** with.WF and at least qualitative verification of th.se computed SFE values with.some experimental measurement tech.iques were considered important as th.se computational meth.ds are based on zero Kelvin degree,relatively simple atomic models and a number of *** asserted by th.s investigation,if th. results of measurement tech.iques can be qualitatively correlated with.th.se of th. computational meth.ds,it can be possible to evaluate th. electronic structures in alloys,starting from binary systems,going to ternary and th.n multi-elemental *** investigation h.s sh.wn th.t such.a qualitative correlation is *** all,th.
