Operation of a dual fluidiz.d bed, cons.s.ing of a ris.r as.combus.or and bubbling bed as.gas.fier, for s.nth.s.s.gas.production from a s.lid fuel requires.determination of th. s.lids.circulation rate and ch.r trans.er rate. th. performance relies.on s.pplying s.fficient h.at from.th. combus.or to th. gas.fier by circulation of s.lids.between th.s. two reactors. th. flow rate of ch.r is.required to track th. h.at generated in th. combus.or, wh.ch.s.pports.endoth.rmic reactions.in th. gas.fier. Direct meas.rement of th.s. two critical param.ters.is.difficult, with.th. number of reported tech.iques.capable of working at h.gh.temperatures.extremely s.all. An indirect m.th.d was.developed, us.ng mas. and energy balances.over th. entire s.s.em and individual reactors. to es.im.te th. s.lids.circulation rate and ch.r trans.er rate. th.re was.general agreement between h.at los.es.es.im.ted from energy-balance calculations.and from direct meas.rement of th. outer reactor s.rface temperature. Under typical gas.fication conditions. th. s.lids.circulation fluxes.were es.im.ted to be 45.2 and 55.6 kg/(m^2 s. in two independent tes.s. wh.ch.were in good agreement with.values.obtained us.ng a th.rmal tracer;ch.r trans.er rates.were calculated to be 1.2 and 0.6 kg/h. wh.ch.were in reas.nable agreement with.average biomas. feed rates. th.s.m.th.d can be applied to dual gas.fication s.s.ems.at any temperature or flow rate.
