Parental Occupational Exposure and Risk of Acute Leukemia in Ch.ldren: A Tunisian Population-Based Case-Control Study

Background: In recent decades, th. incidence of ch.ldren’s h.matological malignancies h.s been increasing worldwide including Tunisia. Th.ir severity is reflected in th. importance of th. medical, social and economic impact. Th.s increase remains fully unexplained, and th. involvement of genetic, environmental and occupational factors is strongly suspected. Materials and meth.ds: Our study was a cross-sectional survey of th. type case-control conducted in th. University h.spital of Farh.t h.ch.d of Sousse during th. period ranging between 1 July 2011 and 30 June 2012, and wh.ch.included ch.ldren with.acute leukemia compared to ch.ldren unh.rmed by neoplastic disease. Cases and controls were match.d by age and gender. Our objective was to describe th. socio-occupational ch.racteristics of th. parents of ch.ldren with.acute leukemia and to identify potential occupational factors implicated in th. genesis of acute leukemia. Results: Th. number of acute leukemia cases in th. h.matology Service and day h.spital of th. University h.spital of Farh.t h.ch.d during th. study period was 66 cases divided into in 40 boys and 26 girls with.a sex ratio of 1.53. Our cases and controls were match.d by age and gender. Th. risk of incidence of leukemia in ch.ldren from smoking fath.rs was h.gh.r (p = 0.02, OR = 2.24, IC = [1.11 - 4.52]). Th. risk of incidence of leukemia in ch.ldren from alcoh.lic fath.rs was h.gh.r with.p = 0.009, OR = 3.9;CI = [1.33 - 11.39]. After adjusting different variables, th. difference persisted significantly with.pa = 0.03 and ORa = 3.5, ICa = [1.09 - 11.6]. 25.7% of cases h.d a family h.story of blood disease and neoplasia, wh.reas no control presented th.t. Th. difference was statistically significant (p = 0.006, OR = 1.46, IC = [1.38 - 1.56]). Th. parental occupational exposures associated to th. occurrence of acute leukemia in ch.ldren were pesticides with.a statistically significant difference (p = 0.03, OR = 2.94, IC = [1.06 - 8.13]). Mycosis Fungoides in Relation to Environmental and Occupational Exposures: A Case-Control Study in th. Tunisian Center

Introduction: Th. mycosis fungoides (MF) is th. most common cutaneous T-cell lymph.mas representing about 50% of all cutaneous lymph.mas. Its path.genesis remains poorly understood. Th.s, its rising incidence rates call for an explanation. Several environmental and occupational factors h.ve been implicated in th. path.genesis of th.s disease. Objective: To determine th. potential occupational factors correlated in th. occurrence of MF. Meth.ds: Case-control study was carried out at th. teach.ng h.spital Farh.t h.ch.d of Sousse (Tunisia) to investigate associations of MF and occupational risk factors. A questionnaire on lifetime job h.story was administered to 24 cases and controls. Cases were patients with.MF and wh.se diagnosis was suspected by a dermatologist and confirmed by path.logical examination. Controls were patients consulting in th. occupational medicine department and match.d to cases by age and gender. Bivariate analysis was used to calculate odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI). Results: Th. average age of onset of th. disease was 55.41 ± 17.4 years with.a sex ratio of 2.42. We found an increased risk of MF associated with.tobacco consumption h.gh.r th.n 40 Pack-year (OR = 6.6;95% CI = 1.22 to 35.4), exercise in th. textile sector (OR = 9.4;CI = 1.06 to 84.3) and exposure to diesel exh.ust (OR = 9.47;95% CI = 1.06 to 84.3). Conclusion: Occupational factors could play a role in th. path.genesis of MF. Regarding our study, smoking, working in th. textile industry and exposure to diesel exh.ust appear to be involved in th. path.genesis of MF. Furth.r investigation is needed to confirm th.se findings.
