Maximizing biomass utilization: An integrated strategy for coproducing multiple chemicals

Lignocellulosic biomass is one of the viable solutions to alleviate the global warming. however, the limited utilization of biomass majorly focused on cellulose and hemicellulose restricts the economic and environmental feasibilities. To cope with this issue, we proposed an integrated process of co-producing 1,6-hexanediol（1,6-hDO） with tetrahydrofuran and adipic acid from biomass, referred to as Strategy A. To compare the impacts of lignin upgrading and feedstock, Strategy B, which co-produces tetrahydrofuran alone, and Strategy C, which is the traditional route to produce 1,6-hDO from fossil fuels, were used. heat networks are also designed to reduce operating costs and indirect carbon emissions due to energy consumption, saving 87% and 83% of the heat and cooling requirements, respectively, in Strategy A. The market competitiveness of Strategy A was evaluated by determining the minimum selling price through techno-economic analysis, and sustainability was thoroughly investigated by quantifying the environmental impacts through both midpoint and endpoint life-cycle assessments（LCAs）.Strategy A was found to be the most favorable both economically（USRDSChARDOLLAR3,402/ton） and environmentally（-26.9 kg CO2eq.）. This indicates that lignin valorization is not only economically but also environmentally preferred. Finally, changes in economic and environmental feasibilities depending on economic, process, and environmental parameters were investigated using sensitivity and uncertainty analyses. The results of these analyses provide valuable insight into bio-based chemical production.

The best active twist schedules exploiting various waveform types are sought taking advantage of the global search algorithm for the reduction of hub vibration and/or power required of a rotor in high-speed conditions. The active twist schedules include two non-harmonic inputs formed based on segmented step functions as well as the simple harmonic waveform input. An advanced Particle Swarm assisted Genetic Algorithm（PSGA） is employed for the optimizer. A rotorcraft Computational Structural Dynamics（CSD） code CAMRAD II is used to perform the rotor aeromechanics analysis. A Computation Fluid Dynamics（CFD） code is coupled with CSD for verification and some physical insights. The PSGA optimization results are verified against the parameter sweep study performed using the harmonic actuation. The optimum twist schedules according to the performance and/or vibration reduction strategy are obtained and their optimization gains are compared between the actuation cases. A two-phase non-harmonic actuation schedule demonstrates the best outcome in decreasing the power required while a four-phase non-harmonic schedule results in the best vibration reduction as well as the simultaneous reductions in the power required and vibration. The mechanism of reduction to the performance gains is identified illustrating the section airloads, angle-of-attack distribution, and elastic twist deformation predicted by the present approaches.

We present our recent research results regarding the designing and implementation of real-time physics simulation engines,which aim at developing physics-inspired e-entertainment such as computer games,mobile applications,interactive TV and other smart media in *** real-time physics engine consists of three functional components:rigid body dynamics simulation,deformable body simulation,and data-driven physics *** core simulation techniques to realize these simulation components include real-time collision detection and response,large-scale model simulation,and character model *** this paper,we highlight these features and demonstrate their *** also showcase some of the gaming applications that we have integrated our physics engine into.

To examine the effect of processing parameters on microstructural evolution and to obtain the excellent combination of strength and toughness, simulation of thermo-mechanical processing was conducted using the Gleeble machine. Trial production was then conducted under the conditions obtained by Gleeble tests. Based on the results of microstructure analysis and mechanical property evaluation, the relationship between microstructural features and mechanical properties was elucidated. The result shows that the volume fraction of constituted phases can be controlled through adjusting the cooling rate and finish cooling temperature in order to get different strength levels. As cooling rate increases, the volume fraction of upper bainite increases, which leads to the increase of strength. The upper shelf energy （USE） increases with increasing volume fraction of acicular ferrite in bainite base because of the small effective acicular ferrite grain size. Ductile-brittle transition temperature （DBTT） decreases with increasing acicular ferrite volume fraction. high reduction in the rough stage has great influence on grain refinement.

Green planning is critically important during the design phases of construction projects but continually gets less attention during *** owners and planners need to understand how communication influences green *** address a gap in the extant research,this paper presents the evaluation results on how sustainability awareness of field supervision personnel impacts the successful completion of school projects by proving that communicating sustainability goals with them is vital for decision-making during the construction stage of the *** paper uses data collected from 162 new school construction projects to compare sustainability design goals with their successful incorporation into completed ***-one project managers and inspectors were surveyed to assess their awareness of key high-performance sustainability requirements that were built into the *** responses from these two groups were compared to examine the positive or negative *** analysis results show that early and continuous communication of sustainability design goals with field supervision personnel has a significant impact on whether those goals are realized when the project is turned over to the owner for *** implementation of sustainability goals not only provides economic benefits from fully exploiting life-cycle costs,but also holds the promise of providing a healthier working environment.

Student recreational facilities at higher education institutions are increasingly utilizing green building strategies to decrease their impact on the campus environment and to increase economic and social impacts on the *** nearly two decades of LEED building development,comparative studies of LEED strategies among buildings are not rare,but still in demand due to the lessons learned from other LEED certified *** paper presents case studies on the green building strategies utilized for six student recreational facilities certified by the *** Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design rating system and examines favorable strategies that lead to the success of obtaining higher rating *** comparative analysis results showed that the energy and atmosphere and indoor environmental quality categories that utilized energy performance optimization and innovative architectural designs for better daylights and views were major components for higher rating levels apart from conventional design criteria such as location,climate,and *** recreational facilities having higher ratings were more favorable in obtaining credits using central plants,stormwater design,innovative wastewater technologies,and light *** findings not only provide specific green buildings strategies for student recreational facilities,but they also enhance the green initiatives for future education facilities on university campuses.

Peroxidase-like properties of Ruthenium nanoframes

This work reports the inherent peroxidase-like properties of Ruthenium （Ru） nanoframes. After templating with Palladium （Pd） seeds, Ru nanoframes with an octa- hedral shape, average edge length of 6.2 nm, and thickness of 1.8 nm were synthesized in high purity （〉95 %） and good uniformity. Using the oxidation of 3,3t,5,5＇-tetram- ethylbenzidine （TMB） by h202 as a model catalytic reac- tion, the Ru frames were demonstrated to be approximately three times more active than natural peroxidases in cat- alyzing the formation of colored products. As compared to their natural counterparts, Ru frames have a stronger binding affinity to TMB as well as a weaker binding affinity to hydrogen peroxide during the catalysis. The Ru frames as peroxidase mimics proved to be chemically and thermally stable. This work represents the first demonstration of Ru nanostructure-based peroxidase mimics and is therefore expected to inspire future research on bio-applications of Ru nanomaterials.

A solvent annealing-induced structural reengineering approach is exploited to fabricate polymersomes from block copolymers that are hard to form vesicles through the traditional solution self-assembly *** specifically,polystyrene-b-poly(4-vinyl pyridine)(PS-b-P4VP)particles with sphere-within-sphere structure(SS particles)are prepared by three-dimensional(3D)soft-confined assembly through emulsion-solvent evaporation,followed by 3D soft-confined solvent annealing upon the SS particles in aqueous dispersions for structural engineering.A water-miscible solvent(e.g.,ThF)is employed for annealing,which results in dramatic transitions of the assemblies,e.g.,from SS particles to *** approach works for PS-b-P4VP in a wide range of block ***,this method enables effective encapsulation/loading of cargoes such as fluorescent dyes and metal nanoparticles,which offers a new route to prepare polymersomes that could be applied for cargo release,diagnostic imaging,and nanoreactor,etc.

We synthesized the rare-earth activated Ro.94_xEuo.06ZnxVO4 （R： Gd and Y; 0〈_x〈_0.08） phosphors with a spherical mor- phology and a smooth surface by the ultrasonic spray pyrolysis. The annealed Ro.94_xEuo.06ZnxVO4 crystallized in the tetragonal zircon type structure, belonging to the space group of I41/amd. The incorporation of a small amount of Zn to Ro.94Euo.06VO4 improved the emission characteristics. The emission intensities of the Gdo.88EUo.06Zno.06VO4 and Yo.9Euo.06Zno.04VO4 phosphors at 619 nm were 72% and 2 1% stronger than those of the Gdo,94Euo.06VO4 and Yo.94Euo.06VO4 phosphors, respectively. We demonstrated that the addi- tion of Zn to Ro.94Euo.06VO4 was quite effective for improving the photoluminescent properties.
