Cell death and survival following manual and femtosecond laser-assisted capsulotomy in age-related cataract

AIM： To study molecular and morphological changes in lens epithelial cells following femtosecond laser-assisted and manually performed continuous curvilinear capsulotomy（CCC） in order to get information about these methods regarding their potential role in the induction of development of secondary cataract. METHODS： Anterior lens capsules（ALC） were removed from 40 patients with age-related cataract by manual CCC and by femtosecond laser-assisted capsulotomy（FLAC）. Samples removed by manual CCC were assorted in group 1, FLAC samples were classified in group 2. Morphology of lens epithelial cells was examined with light and electron microscopes. Following capsulotomy, expressions of p53, Bcl-2 and cyclin D1 genes were analyzed with reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction. Immunohistochemistry was used to detect the pro-apoptotic p53 in the epithelial cells. RESULTS： Light and electron microscopic examination showed that ALC of group 1 contained more degenerating cells following manual CCC than after FLAC. The expression level of p53 was higher after manual than laser-assisted surgery. Immunocytochemistry indicated significantly higher number of cells containing p53 protein in the manual CCC group than following FLAC. Bcl-2 and cyclin D1 gene expression levels were slightly lower following manual CCC than after FLAC, but the difference was not significant. CONCLUSION： Manually removed ALC shows slightly, but not significantly larger damage due to the mechanical stretching and pulling of the capsule than those removed using FLAC.

Acyl-coenzyme A（CoA） ligases catalyze the activation of carboxylic acids via a two-step reaction of adenylation followed by ***,we report the discovery of a non-adenylating acyl-CoA ligase PtmA2 and the functional separation of an acyl-CoA ligase *** PtmA1 and PtmA2,two acyl-CoA ligases from the biosynthetic pathway of platensimycin and platencin,are necessary for the two steps of CoA *** inactivation of ptmA1 and ptmA2 resulted in the accumulation of free acid and adenylate intermediates,*** and structural characterization of PtmA2 confirmed its ability to only catalyze *** characterization of PtmA2 revealed it binds both free acid and adenylate substrates and undergoes the established mechanism of domain ***,site-directed mutagenesis restored both the adenylation and complete CoA activation *** study challenges the currently accepted paradigm of adenylating enzymes and inspires future investigations on functionally separated acyl-CoA ligases and their ramifications in biology.

Potential role of strike-slip faults in opening up the South China sea

Radiometric dates of key rock units indicate that a remnant Late Mesozoic ocean of the Huatung Basin is still preserved today east of the South China sea(SCS).We integrate regional geology with a Cretaceous oceanic basement in the vicinity of the Huatung Basin to reconstruct the Huatung Plate east of the Eurasian *** of geophysical investigations, four expeditions of deep-sea drilling and a renaissance of regional geology allow us to propose a hypothesis that the mechanism responsible for the SCS opening was raised from strike-slip fault on the *** hypothesis suggests that the SCS opening could highly relate to the strike-slip faults inherited from Late Mesozoic structures onshore–offshore the se Cathaysia Block to develop rhombic-shaped extensional basins en echelon on the thinned Eurasian continental crust in the Early *** was followed by sinistral strike-slip movements along the boundary between the Eurasian Plate and the Huatung Plate driven by oblique subduction of the Huatung Plate to the northwest coupled with slab-pull force by southward subduction of the Proto-SCS to open up the triangle-shaped oceanic East Sub-basin in the Early Oligocene(33/34 Ma).The spreading ridge then propagated southwestward in the step-over segment between the Zhongnan-Lile and the Red River strike-slip fault systems to open the triangle-shaped oceanic Southwest Sub-basin by 23 *** plate boundary fault was subsequently converted into the Manila Trench when the Eocene Sierra Madre arc of the Huatung Plate had moved from the south to its present latitude by the Middle Miocene.

为降低盐诱发高血压的风险,医学专家强调的膳食指南是促进高钾低钠摄入以使钾钠摩尔比≥1∶1。然而过去几十年间,几乎没人改变他们的膳食习惯以充分满足推荐的膳食钠钾目标。因此,降低盐诱发高血压的风险又不要求改变主要膳食习惯的新策略具有相当大的医学意义。该研究在一个广泛应用的盐诱发高血压模型Dahl盐敏感性大鼠中,发现补充硝酸盐与钠的摩尔比约为1∶170时,补充膳食硝酸盐摄入可以抑制盐诱发高血压的形成。

Cytoplasm Has No Effect on the Yield and Quality of Biomass Sorghum Hybrids

The development of the biomass sorghum hybrid seed industry is contingent on the use of cytoplasmic male sterility. Within sorghum, there are several different cytoplasmic male sterility systems and it is important to determine early in development if cytoplasm will affect agronomic performance or composition characters. Thus, if there is a difference, then the best system can be deployed. The purpose of this study was to determine if cytoplasm per se influences agronomic performance of biomass sorghum using a set of iso-cytoplasmic hybrids. Three hybrid genotypes were produced in three different cytoplasms (A1, A2, and A3) for a total of nine hybrids. These hybrids were evaluated for plant height, biomass yield, and biomass composition in three Texas environments (Weslaco, College Station, and Halfway) in 2010. Across environments, significant differences existed among hybrids for both agronomic and compositional traits, but cytoplasm per se had no effect on any measured trait. Since cytoplasm did not effect on hybrid performance, any of the tested cytoplasms (A1, A2, and A3) can be deployed in hybrid biomass sorghums.

We propose a flexible white-light system for high-speed visible-light communication(VLC)applications,which consists of a semipolar blue InGaN/GaN single-quantum-well micro-light-emitting diode(LED)on a flexible substrate pumping green CsPbBr3 perovskite quantum-dot(PQD)paper in nanostructure form and red Cdse QD *** highest bandwidth for CsPbBr3 PQD paper,229 MHz,is achieved with a blue micro-LED pumping source and a high data transmission rate of 400 Mbps;this is very promising for VLC *** 817 MHz maximum bandwidth and a 1.5 Gbps transmission speed are attained by the proposed semipolar blue *** proposed flexible white light system and the high-bandwidth PQD paper could pave the way for VLC wearable devices.

传统的单机环境和封闭式网络环境由于有限的资源利用能力,难以充分支持分散地学数据、模型等资源的共享与应用集成。基于网络环境的信息交换特点,提出了分布式地理空间模型共享的服务体系。该体系以数据、模型、元数据等互操作要素为核心,通过网络将数据、模型等网络节点进行开放式耦合。针对地理空间模型服务的互操作问题,提出了分布式环境下的模型共享服务交互接口,该接口定义了模型服务元数据、模型服务的交互操作、模型服务的通讯方式等交互规则,尽可能地降低模型服务与模型终端之间在数据交换、功能调用等方面的互操作困难。为了降低将模型共享为模型服务的实现难度,设计和开发了地理空间模型共享平台,并介绍了在该平台上发布地理空间模型的2种方法。最后介绍了研究成果在Prairie生态模型共享方面的应用实践。

Evaluation by ICP-MS of Essential, Nonessential and Toxic Elements in Brazilian Fish and seafood Samples

Fish is considered one of the healthiest foods due to the high levels of several important cardioprotective compounds such as long chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids and vitamin E. However, due to widespread environmental pollution, high levels of contaminants may also be present in fish and seafood samples, which may counteract the beneficial effects of consumption of this food. With this in mind, the aims of this study were: 1) to examine both toxic and essential chemical elements in seafood and river and sea fish samples sold in different Brazilian regions by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-MS);2) to estimate the daily intake of these chemical elements by Brazilians. The toxic elements Ba, Cd, Pb, Sr, V and Sb were found in higher concentrations in seafood than in either sea or river fish, while As concentrations were higher in both seafood and sea fish than in river fish. On the other hand, Hg levels were higher in river and sea fish. Concentrations of the essential chemical elements Co, Mn, Cu, Fe, Mg, Zn and Mo were significantly higher in seafood compared with both sorts of fish except for se, whose levels were similar in seafood and sea fish. Daily intake of all chemical elements was estimated on the basis of a calculation of the amount of fish consumed by Brazilian households (mean fish and seafood consumption of 11.0 g/person/day). The amount of toxic element in fish and seafood did not represent a risk for the Brazilian people. Moreover, fish and seafood seem to be a good source of selenium.
