Carbon monoxide decreases interleukin-1β levels in the lung through the induction of pyrin

Carbon monoxide （CO） can act as an anti-inflammatory effector in mouse models of lung injury and disease, through the downregulation of pro-inflammatory cytokines production, though the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. The nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain-, leucine-rich region-, and pyrin domain-containing-3 （NLRP3） inflammasome is a protein complex that regulates the maturation and secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines, including interleukin-1β （IL-1β）. In this report, we show that the CO-releasing molecule （CORM-2） can stimulate the expression of pyrin, a negative regulator of the NLRP3 inflammasome. CORM-2 increased the transcription of pyrin in the human leukemic cell line （THP-1） in the absence and presence of lipopolysaccharide （LPS）. In THP-1 cells, CORM-2 treatment dose-dependently reduced the activation of caspase-1 and the secretion of IL-lp, and increased the levels of IL-IO, in response to LPS and adenosine 5＇-triphosphate （ATP）, an NLRP3 inflammasome activation model. Genetic interference of IL-10 by small interfering RNA （siRNA） reduced the effectiveness of CORM-2 in inhibiting IL-1β production and in inducing pyrin expression. Genetic interference of pyrin by siRNA increased IL-lp production in response to LPS and ATP, and reversed CORM-2-dependent inhibition of caspase-1 activation. CO inhalation （250 ppm） in vivo increased the expression of pyrin and IL-10 in lung and spleen, and decreased the levels of IL-1β induced by LPS. Consistent with the induction of pyrin and IL-10, and the downregulation of lung IL-1β production, CO provided protection in a model of acute lung injury induced by intranasal LPS administration. These results provide a novel mechanism underlying the anti-inflammatory effects of CO, involving the IL-10-dependent upregulation of pyrin expression.

Effect of Meteorological Data Assimilation on Regional Air Quality Forecasts over the Korean Peninsula

The Weather Research and Forecasting model coupled with Chemistry(WRF-Chem),a type of online coupled chemistry-meteorology model(CCMM),considers the interaction between air quality and meteorology to improve air quality *** data assimilation(DA)can be used to reduce uncertainty in meteorological field,which is one factor causing prediction uncertainty in the *** this study,WRF-Chem and three-dimensional variational DA were used to examine the impact of meteorological DA on air quality and meteorological forecasts over the Korean *** nesting model domains were configured over East Asia(outer domain)and the Korean Peninsula(inner domain).Three experiments were conducted by using different DA domains to determine the optimal model domain for the meteorological *** the meteorological DA was performed in the outer domain or both the outer and inner domains,the root-mean-square error(RMSE),bias of the predicted particulate matter(PM)concentrations,and the RMSE of predicted meteorological variables against the observations were smaller than those in the experiment where the meteorological DA was performed only in the inner *** indicates that the improvement of the synoptic meteorological fields by DA in the outer domain enhanced the meteorological initial and boundary conditions for the inner domain,subsequently improving air quality and meteorological *** to the experiment without meteorological DA,the RMSE and bias of the meteorological and PM variables were smaller in the experiments with *** effect of meteorological DA on the improvement of PM predictions lasted for approximately 58-66 h,depending on the ***,the uncertainty reduction in the meteorological initial condition by the meteorological DA contributed to a reduction of the forecast errors of both meteorology and air quality.

Study on adhesively-bonded surface of tapered double cantilever specimen made of aluminum foam affected with shear force

Aluminum foam is widely used in diverse areas to minimize the weight and maximize the absorption of shock energy in lightweight structures and various *** presents a number of advantages,such as low density,incombustibility,non-rigidity,excellent energy absorptivity,sound absorptivity and low heat *** aluminum foam with an air cell structure was placed under the TDCB Mode II tensile load by using Landmark equipment manufactured by MTS to examine the shear failure *** angle of the tapered adhesively-bonded surfaces of specimens was designated as a variable,and three models were developed with the inclined angles differing from one another at 6°,8° and 10°.The specimens with the inclined angles of 6°,8° and 10° have the maximum reaction forces of 168 N,194 N when the forced displacements are 6,5 and 4.2 mm *** are three specimens with the inclined angles of 10°,8° and 6° in the order of maximum reaction *** the analysis result,the maximum equivalent stresses of 0.813 MPa and 0.895 MPa happened when the forced displacements of 6 mm and 5 mm proceeded at the models of 6° and 8°,respectively.A simulation was carried out on the basis of finite element method and the experimental *** results of the experiment and the simulation analysis are shown not different from each other ***,only a simulation could be confirmed to be performed in substitution of an experiment,which is costly and time-consuming in order to determine the shearing properties of materials made of aluminum foam with artificial data.

Survival analysis based on human epidermal growth factor 2 status in stage Ⅱ-Ⅲ gastric cancer

AIM To investigate human epidermal growth factor 2(HER2) overexpression and validate its prognostic effect in stage Ⅱ-Ⅲ gastric *** We reviewed the data of patients who were diagnosed with gastric cancer between March 2008 and October 2013 at the Yonsei University Medical Center. Among these patients, 384 patients who met the inclusion criteria were analyzed retrospectively. RESULTS Thirty-two(8.3%) of the 384 stage Ⅱ-Ⅲ gastric cancer patients exhibited HER2 overexpression. The median follow-up duration was 26.0 mo. HER2-negative patients had superior recurrence-free survival(RFS) compared to HER2-positive patients(HR = 0.52, 95%CI: 0.30-0.89; P = 0.015). The median overall survival(OS) was significantly prolonged in the HER2-negative group compared with the HER2-positive group(55.0 mo vs 38.0 mo, HR = 0.43, 95%CI: 0.21-0.88, P = 0.021). OS was also prolonged in HER2-negative patients who received adjuvant chemotherapy compared to HER2-positive patients(55.0 vs 38.0mo, HR = 0.42, 95%CI: 0.18-1.00, P = 0.051). In patients who did not receive adjuvant chemotherapy,the median RFS was prolonged in the HER2-negative group compared to the HER2-positive group(not reached vs 12.0 mo, HR = 0.17, 95%CI: 0.06-0.49, P= 0.001). In a multivariate analysis, HER2 status(HR= 0.421, 95%CI: 0.206-0.861, P = 0.018) and Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status(HR = 2.002, 95%CI: 1.530-2.618, P < 0.001) were independent predictors of *** Our findings showed that HER2-positive patients had inferior OS and RFS. Stage Ⅱ-Ⅲ HER2-positive patients might be potential candidates for targeted therapies involving trastuzumab.

Metal–organic framework-templated nitrogen-doped graphitic carbon(NGC)and polydopaminederived carbon(PDA-derived C)-double coated one-dimensional CoSe_(2) nanorods supported highly porous threedimensional microspheres are introduced as anodes for excellent Na-ion batteries,particularly with long-lived cycle under carbonate-based electrolyte *** microspheres uniformly composed of ZIF-67 polyhedrons and polystyrene nanobeads(φ=40 nm)are synthesized using the facile spray pyrolysis technique,followed by the selenization process(P-CoSe_(2)@NGC NR).Further,the PDA-derived C-coated microspheres are obtained using a solution-based coating approach and the subsequent carbonization process(P-CoSe_(2)@PDA-C NR).The rational synthesis approach benefited from the synergistic effects of dual carbon coating,resulting in a highly conductive and porous nanostructure that could facilitate rapid diffusion of charge species along with efficient electrolyte infiltration and effectively channelize the volume ***,the prepared nanostructure exhibits extraordinary electrochemical performance,particularly the ultra-long cycle life *** instance,the advanced anode has a discharge capacity of 291(1000th cycle,average capacity decay of 0.017%)and 142 mAh g^(-1)(5000th cycle,average capacity decay of 0.011%)at a current density of 0.5 and 2.0 A g^(-1),respectively.

Simple method for extracting the seasonal signals of photochemical reflectance index and normalized difference vegetation index measured using a spectral reflectance sensor

A spectral reflectance sensor(SRS)fixed on the near-surface ground was developed to support the continuous monitoring of vegetation indices such as the normalized difference vegetation index(NDVI)and photochemical reflectance index(PRI).NDVI is useful for indicating crop growth/phenology,whereas PRI was developed for observing physiological ***,the seasonal change patterns of NDVI and PRI are two valuable pieces of information in a crop-monitoring ***,capturing the seasonal patterns is considered challenging because the vegetation index values estimated by the reflection from vegetation are often governed by meteorological conditions,such as solar irradiance and ***,unlike growth/phenology,the physiological condition has diurnal changes as well as seasonal *** study proposed a novel filtering method for extracting the seasonal signals of SRS-based NDVI and PRI in paddy rice,barley,and ***,the measurement accuracy of SRSs was compared with handheld spectrometers,and the R^(2)values between the two devices were 0.96 and 0.81 for NDVI and PRI,***,the experimental study of threshold criteria with respect to meteorological variables(i.e.,insolation,cloudiness,sunshine duration,and precipitation)was conducted,and sunshine duration was the most useful one for excluding distorted values of the vegetation *** data processing based on sunshine duration,the R^(2)values between the measured vegetation indices and the extracted seasonal signals of vegetation indices increased by approximately 0.002–0.004(NDVI)and 0.065–0.298(PRI)on the three crops,and the seasonal signals of vegetation indices became noticeably *** method will contribute to an agricultural monitoring system by identifying the seasonal changes in crop growth and physiological conditions.

Elevating the charge cut-off voltage beyond traditional 4.2 V is a commonly accepted technology to increase the energy density of Li-ion batteries(LIBs) but the risk of Li-dendrites and fire hazard increases as well. The use of ambi-functional additive, which forms stable solid electrolyte interphase(SEI) simultaneously at both cathode and anode, is a key to enabling a dendrites-free and well-working high-voltage LIB. Herein, a novel ambi-functional additive, pentaerythritol disulfate(PEDS), at 1 wt% without any other additive is demonstrated. We show the feasibility and high impacts of PEDS in forming lithium sulfateincorporated robust SEI layers at NCM523 cathode and graphite anode in 1 Ah-level pouch cell under4.4 V, 25 °C and 0.1 C rate, which mitigates the high-voltage instability, metal-dissolution and cracks on NCM523 particles, and prevents Li-dendrites at graphite anode. Improved capacity retention of 83%after 300 cycles is thereby achieved, with respect to 69% with base electrolyte, offering a promising path toward the design of practical high-energy LIBs.

Gastric cancer is the second leading cause of cancerrelated deaths *** cytotoxic chemotherapy has limited efficacy for metastatic gastric cancer,with an overall survival of approximately ten *** advances in high-throughput technologies have enabled the implementation of personalized cancer therapy for high-risk *** use of such high-throughput technologies,including microarray and next generation sequencing,have promoted the discovery of novel targets that offer new treatment strategies for patients lacking other therapeutic *** molecular pathways are currently under investigation as therapeutic targets in gastric cancer,including those related to the epidermal growth factor receptor family,the mesenchymal-epithelial transition factor axis,and the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase-AKTmammalian target of rapamycin *** in molecular diagnostic tools further support the discovery of new molecular *** exist,however;not all patients can be tested for biomarkers,and numerous challenges hamper implementation of targeted therapy in clinical ***,the scale of tumor genomic profiling is rapidly outpacing our ability to appropriately synthesize all the information in order to optimally refine patient ***,clinicians must continue to educate themselves regarding new tools and frameworks,and to utilize multidisciplinary team science,comprised of oncologists,geneticists,pathologists,biologists and bioinformaticians,to successfully implement this genomic approach therapeutically.

Muscular atrophy and weakness in the lower extremities in Behçet’s disease: A case report and review of literature

BACKGROUND In Behçet’s disease(BD),very few cases of muscular involvement have been reported *** natural history and therapeutic protocol for muscular involvement in BD are obscure due to the low incidence of peripheral neuropathy or myopathy in *** purpose of our study was to report a rare case of BD with chronic,focal forms of neuromyopathy and review the relevant *** SUMMARY We herein report the case of a 54-year-old man who presented with progressive muscular atrophy and weakness of both thighs 2 years after the presentation of the cardinal symptoms of *** past medical history,electrophysiological study,neurological examination,blood tests,magnetic resonance imaging study,and histological exam were performed for the differential *** literature on muscular involvement in BD was *** examination revealed that muscular involvement was predominantly localized in the proximal parts of the lower *** enhancement of several thigh muscles was observed on magnetic resonance imaging,which corresponded with the clinical *** study of one of the enhanced muscles showed denervation atrophy of the muscle with superimposed myopathic changes,while electrophysiological studies only suggested *** To our knowledge,this is the first case of neurogenic muscular atrophy with a specific set of clinical,radiological,electrophysiological,and histological findings reported in BD.
