Meteorological indicators of dengue epidemics in non-endemic Northwest Argentina

In the last two decades dengue cases increased significantly throughout the world,giving place to more frequent outbreaks in Latin America.In the non-endemic city of San Ramòn de la Nueva Orán,located in Northwest Argentina,large dengue outbreaks alternate with several years of smaller ones.This pattern,as well as the understanding of the underlying mechanisms,could be essential to design proper strategies to reduce epidemic size.We develop a stochastic model that includes climate variables,social structure,and mobility between a non-endemic city and an endemic area.Climatic variables were input of a mosquito population ecological model,which in turn was coupled to a meta-population,spatially explicit,epidemiological model.Human mobility was included into the model given the high border crossing to the northern country of Bolivia,where dengue transmission is sustained during the whole year.We tested different hypotheses regarding people mobility as well as climate variability by fitting numerical simulations to weekly clinical data reported from 2009 to 2016.After assessing the number of imported cases that triggered the observed outbreaks,our model allows to explain the observed epidemic pattern.We found that the number of vectors per host and the effective reproductive number are proxies for large epidemics.Both proxies are related with climate variability such as rainfall and temperature,opening the possibility to test these meteorological variables for forecast purposes.

Testing the effectiveness of conservation management within biosphere reserves:the case of the Mexican deer mouse(Peromyscus mexicanus)as a bioindicator

Biosphere reserves are protected areas whose purpose is to combine conservation and sustainable development.However,their effectiveness has not been tested sufficiently,especially from an ecological and genetic approach.In this sense,the Peromyscus genus represents an excellent bioindicator to address these questions,due to its short life and high evolutionary rate and fecundity.For conservation managers,genetic structure can increase the rate of loss of genetic diversity because alleles exclusive of a subpopulation are more likely to disappear as a consequence of genetic drift in comparison with a panmictic population.Here we analyzed the abundance,movement distances,morphology/morphometry and genetic structure of 3 populations of Mexican deer mouse(Peromyscus mexicanus)located in different protected zones of La Tigra National Park(Honduras).Our results are consistent among the 3 approaches and showed the highest values of abundance,morphometry and genetic diversity in the population located at the core zone,whereas non-statistically significant differences were found between buffer and transition zone populations,suggesting suitable effectiveness of conservation management in the core zone but a lack of ecological buffering function of the other zones.In addition,the low movement distances and high genetic structure among the studied populations provide evidence of poor conservation management in the buffer and transition zone.Thus,we discuss the utility of the novel methodology used in this work,combining morphometry,abundance and genetics,in testing the effectiveness of conservation strategies in biosphere reserves,and the value of the Peromyscus genus as a bioindicator.

PPAR and Local Renin-Angiotensin Systems in Cardiovascular and Metabolic Diseases Associated with Obesity: A Unifying Hypothesis

Recent research has revealed roles for the PPAR family of transcription factors in the modulation of the RAAS. In particular, PPARα and PPARγ have been shown to control the transcription of renin in several tissues and influence the activity of local renin-angiotensin-systems coupling vascular and metabolic functions and contributing to their modulation. In this conceptual framework, PPAR and local RAS participate in the pathophysiology of blood pressure elevation, as well as in organ and tissue damage, and disturbances of glucose and lipid metabolism associated with cardiovascular diseases and obesity. The understanding of these mechanisms here discussed and their adequate pharmacological manipulation enlarge the potential to intervene pathological processes that connect the obesity with associate diseases and could alert about the adverse effects of some PPAR agonists on involved organs.

Involvement of ethylene receptors in the salt tolerance response of Cucurbita pepo

Abiotic stresses have a negative effect on crop production,affecting both vegetative and reproductive development.Ethylene plays a relevant role in plant response to environmental stresses,but the specific contribution of ethylene biosynthesis and signalling components in the salt stress response differs between Arabidopsis and rice,the two most studied model plants.In this paper,we study the effect of three gain-of-function mutations affecting the ethylene receptors CpETR1B,CpETR1A,and CpETR2B of Cucurbita pepo on salt stress response during germination,seedling establishment,and subsequent vegetative growth of plants.The mutations all reduced ethylene sensitivity,but enhanced salt tolerance,during both germination and vegetative growth,demonstrating that the three ethylene receptors play a positive role in salt tolerance.Under salt stress,etr1b,etr1a,and etr2b germinate earlier than WT,and the root and shoot growth rates of both seedlings and plants were less affected in mutant than in WT.The enhanced salt tolerance response of the etr2b plants was associated with a reduced accumulation of Na^(+)in shoots and leaves,as well as with a higher accumulation of compatible solutes,including proline and total carbohydrates,and antioxidant compounds,such as anthocyanin.Many membrane monovalent cation transporters,including Na^(+)/H^(+)and K^(+)/H^(+)exchangers(NHXs),K^(+)efflux antiporters(KEAs),high-affinity K^(+)transporters(HKTs),and K^(+)uptake transporters(KUPs)were also highly upregulated by salt in etr2b in comparison with WT.In aggregate,these data indicate that the enhanced salt tolerance of the mutant is led by the induction of genes that exclude Na+in photosynthetic organs,while maintaining K^(+)/Na^(+)homoeostasis and osmotic adjustment.If the salt response of etr mutants occurs via the ethylene signalling pathway,our data show that ethylene is a negative regulator of salt tolerance during germination and vegetative growth.Nevertheless,the higher upregulation of genes involved in Ca^(2+)signalling(CpCRCK2A

Densities(ρ) and dynamic viscosities(η) for three binary mixtures of n-decane with 1-pentanol,1-hexanol and1-heptanol are presented at temperatures from 293.15 to 363.15 K and atmospheric pressure over the entire composition range.The density and viscosity are measured using a vibrating tube densimeter and a cylindrical Couette type rotating viscometer,respectively.Excess molar volumes(V^E),viscosity deviations(△η) and excess Gibbs energy of activation of viscous flow(△G^(*E)) are calculated from the experimental measurements.Intermolecular and structural interactions are indicated by the sign and magnitude of these properties.Partial molar volumes and infinity dilution molar partial volumes are also calculated for each binary system.These results are correlated using Redlich-Kister type equations.

Do supplemental perches influence electrocution risk for diurnal raptors?

Background:Power lines are amongst the main causes of mortality for birds globally.Electrocution drives the population dynamics of several threatened species of raptors,at local and global scales.Among the many solutions that have been tested to minimize this threat are supplemental perches;however,their efficiency has rarely been assessed.Methods:We designed 43 transects in 4 districts in mainland Portugal to gather data from birds perching on pylons with or without supplemental perches.From 2015 to 2018,transects were surveyed by car at least once.We analyzed the factors driving the use of these supplemental perches,and we analyzed if there were differences in the perceived risk(calculated from measurements and not from field surveys)depending on whether the perching was on pylons with or without supplemental perches.Results:We recorded 548 perches of 14 species.Weather conditions seemed to play a role in birds’choice of pylons with supplemental perches versus pylons without supplemental perches.Models also indicated a strong influence of observational conditions.The use of models showed us an important specific effect in the selection of supplemental perches where available:there are some species with a greater tendency to perch on supplemental perches,even when they use both pylons with and without supplemental perches.For most of the analyzed species and species groups,perceived risk was higher in pylons without supplemental perches compared to pylons with supplemental perches,but there were differences between species.Conclusions:Supplemental perches may be a useful and efficient tool for mitigating raptor electrocution.However,there are many influential factors affecting their success,and their effectiveness with different species groups is not homogeneous.Some studies show higher electrocution rates for certain species and devices and thus,their efficacy must be validated.We propose a two-step validation process,first in controlled conditions and then in the field.A common protocol should be established t

Determinants of percutaneous coronary intervention success in repeat chronic total occlusion procedures following an initial failed attempt

AIM To investigate the rates and determinants of success of repeat percutaneous coronary intervention(PCI) following an initial failed attempt at recanalising the chronic total occlusions(CTO) percutaneously.METHODS In 445 consecutive first attempt CTO-PCI procedures in our institution,procedural failure occurred in 149(33.5%). Sixty-four re-PCI procedures were performed in 58 patients(39%) all had a single CTO. Procedural and outcome data in the re-PCI population was entered into the institutional database. A retrospective analysis of clinical,angiographic and procedural data was performed. RESULTS Procedural success was achieved in 41(64%) procedures. Univariate analysis of clinical and angiographic characteristics showed that re-PCI success was associated with intravascular ultrasound(IVUS) guidance(19.5% vs 0%,P = 0.042),while failure was associated with severecalcification(30.4% vs 9.7%,P = 0.047) and a JCTO score > 3(56.5% vs 17.1% P = 0.003). Following multiple regression analysis the degree of lesion complexity(J-CTO score > 3),IVUS use,involvement of an experienced CTO operator and LAD CTO location were significant predictors of successful re-PCI. Overall the complication rate was low,with the only MACCE two periprocedural MI's neither of which required intervention. CONCLUSION Re-PCI substantially increases the overall success rate of CTO revascularization. Predictors of re-PCI success included the use of IVUS,the involvement of an experienced CTO operator in the repeat attempt and the location of the CTO.

CdS, CdSe and PbS films were grown onto glass by chemical bath deposition (CBD). Different constant deposition temperatures (Td) were employed in the range 0-80 °C with subintervals of 10 °C. Concentration of reagents, pH, and stirring were maintained constants. A microcrystalline mixture CdCO3 and CdS were grown. At intermediates Td values a mixture of both materials present. i. e., For Td? 40 °C, the intensity of the main of X-ray Diffraction (XRD) CdS peak is abruptly reduced. By scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) with Td = 80 °C, concentration atomic: Cd = 49.10, S = 51.90, for Td? 70 °C, increase of carbon and oxygen. The CdSe, average grain size (GS) increased monotonic with Td, reaching saturation of 70 °C, with GS values of 5-16 nm. At low Td values (0-20 °C), the structural phase was found, and the high Td = 70 °C on material 5-16 nm was appreciated transition to phase: Wurzite (W)? Zinbclende (ZB) and phases mixture: W/ZB, grain size (GS) 9-27 nm. By (XRD), PbS grow in W phase at all films, for Td = 60 °C, was observed preferential orientation in plane [111] with (GS) of 19-26 nm also a Gibbs free energy calculation is included.
