With demand increasing for phosphate recovery,a considerable share of current research is dedicated to elaborate multifunctional *** this way,the objective of this work was to produce hybrid films from the combination of cellulose acetate(CA)biopolymer and magnesium and aluminium layered double hydroxides(LDHs)and investigate their performance for phosphate *** this work,the following materials were prepared and characterized:LDH,calcinated LDH(LDH-c),CA film(CAF),CA film with LDH(CAF-LDH)and CA film with LDH-c(CAF-LDH-c).The produced materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction,thermogravimetric analysis coupled with differential scanning calorimetry and mass spectrometry,attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electronic *** thickness,H2O absorption(AH2O),stability in H2O and phosphate adsorption of the produced films were *** adsorption capacity of films was compared to LDHs in powder *** CAF-LDH and CAF-LDH-c increased film thickness,where CAF-LDH-c was thicker than ***-LDH-c had higher AH2O than the other films,because of its increased thickness and mainly because of the H2O sorption process of these materials.H2O stability of 98.97%for CAF-LDH and 96.81%for CAF-LDH-c suggest the produced films can maintain their structural properties even after a long contact period with aqueous *** the CAF-LDH-c,the maximum adsorption capacity of phosphate,according to the Langmuir-Freundlich model,was 6.98 mg/*** adsorption value suggests that this film can be used as an efficient phosphorus(P)adsorbent from wastewater or a eutrophicated source.

The application of phosphorus(P)to soil can increase its availability to plants and alter P fractions in annual and perennial organs of Cordia *** a portion of P accumulates in perennial organs in organic fractions it can be used in the next growth season,possibly decreasing plant dependence on P derived from soil ***,if P is preferentially accumulated in inorganic fractions in annual organs,plants will be more dependent on phosphate *** study aimed to evaluate the distribution of P fractions in organs of *** grown on sandy soil treated with 120 and 360 kg P2O5 ha^(−1).The control was a zero *** 24 months following fertilization,*** seedlings were cut and separated into leaves,branches,stems and roots,dried,ground and subjected to chemical fractionation of P,which estimates fractions of total soluble P,soluble inorganic and organic P,lipid P,P associated ribonucleic acid and deoxyribonucleic acid,and residual P.P in annual organs,as leaves,accumulated preferentially in the soluble inorganic fraction in both *** perennial organs such as stems and branches,P accumulated preferentially in the soluble organic *** application of 300%of the recommended dosage(360 kg P2O5 ha^(−1))promoted the accumulation of P in soluble organic fractions which may contribute to annual growth the following season and be a strategy to reduce the dependence of 2-year-old stands on soil-derived P and on fertilizers.

This paper considers the pipeline network design problem (PND) in ethanol transportation, with a view to providing robust and efficient computational tools to assist decision makers in evaluating the technical and economic feasibility of ethanol pipeline network designs. Such tools must be able to address major design decisions and technical characteristics, and estimate network construction and operation costs to any time horizon. The specific context in which the study was conducted was the ethanol industry in Sao Paulo. Five instances were constructed using pseudo-real data to test the methodologies developed.

Objective: To determine the prognostic value of the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) classification and of the main clinical pathologic variables in renal cell carcinoma (RCC) patients who underwent surgical treatment. Methods: In this international collaborative study, 376 RCC patients who underwent partial nephrectomy (PN) or radical nephrectomy (RN) during the period 1989-2009 were assessed. The pathological data were reviewed by a single pathologist, and all of the surgically treated patients had been previously evaluated by a team of anesthesiologists and classified as ASA 1, ASA 2, or ASA 3. Results: In total, 318 patients were included in the study, with a mean followup of 48 months. Incidental tumors represented 47% of the cases, while 11.6% presented with metastases at diagnosis. Among the patients assessed, 38 (11.9%) were classified as ASA 1, 213 (67%) as ASA 2, and 67 (21.1%) as ASA 3. An association between the ASA classification and the main clinicopathological variables of RCC was observed. The univariate analysis for overall survival (OS) revealed significant differences in the survival curves according to the ASA classification (p de neoplasms, the presence of metastasis at diagnosis, clinical stage III/IV, and incidental tumors remained as independent predictors of survival. Moreover, the multivariate analysis revealed a negative impact of the ASA classification on OS (p = 0.001). Conclusions: The present study demonstrated a correlation between the ASA classification and the main prognostic factors of RCC and its impact on survival rates. ASA 3 patients had more aggressive tumors, increased risk of perioperative complications, and worse outcomes compared with ASA1 or ASA 2. Thus, the ASA classification may be considered an additional tool for assessing and planning the treatment of RCC patients.

Tooth decay affects most of the population in developed countries. The multifactorial etiology of the disease includes multiple bacterial species, S. mutans is the main pathogen associated with the disease. This bacterium adheres to the tooth surface and allows the colonization of other microorganisms resulting in dental biofilm. Several therapeutic agents are available to treat or prevent tooth decay, but none, with the exception of fluoride, has significantly influenced the disease’s global burden. Moreover, the probable development of resistance of microorganisms to existing antibacterial agents and the scarcity of good antimicrobial agents motivates this effort for innovation. The detailed knowledge obtained in recent years on the S. mutans allowed the identification of potential targets in this microorganism, enabling the development of specific drugs to combat tooth decay. Thus, the identification of potential targets in these pathogens is the first step in the discovery process of new therapeutic agents. Currently, the experimental assays used for this purpose are expensive and time consuming. In contrast, bioinformatics methods to predict drug targets are cheap, quick and workaday in the biotechnology. This article will review the potential drug targets in S. mutans, as well as the bioinformatics methods used to identify these targets and effective drugs for specific pharmacological treatment of dental caries.

AIM To study the differences in immune response and cytokine profile between acute liver failure and selflimited acute *** Forty-six patients with self-limited acute hepatitis(AH), sixteen patients with acute liver failure(ALF), and twenty-two healthy subjects were involved in this study. The inflammatory and anti-inflammatory products in plasma samples were quantified using commercial enzyme-linked immunoassays and quantitative real-time PCR. The cellular immune responses were measured by proliferation assay using flow cytometry. The groups were divided into viral- and non-viral-induced selflimited AH and ALF. Thus, we worked with five groups: Hepatitis A virus(HAV)-induced self-limited acute hepatitis(HAV-AH), HAV-induced ALF(HAV-ALF), nonviral-induced self-limited acute hepatitis(non-viral AH), non-viral-induced acute liver failure(non-viral ALF), and healthy subjects(HC). Comparisons among HAV and non-viral-induced AH and ALF were *** The levels of mitochondrial DNA(mt DNA) and the cytokines investigated [interleukin(IL)-6, IL-8, IL-10, interferon gamma, and tumor necrosis factor] were significantly increased in ALF patients, independently of etiology(P death [mt DNA: OR = 12.1(95%CI: 2.57-57.07), P = 0.002; and IL-10: OR = 8.01(95%CI: 1.26-50.97), P = 0.027]. In this case report, we present a male patient who arrived at the hospital for the first time at the age of 8 with giant keloids in both ears and diagnosed by the dermatology and Plastic Surgery as having the “Disease of Jorge Lobo”, which is a fungal infection due to the story of the endemic characteristics. After the first surgical intervention, he received guidance from the team for keloids and left the hospital using elastic mesh and a request to change the place where he lived to reduce his contact with the fungi. Fourteen years later, the patient returned to the Plastic Surgery Service having even larger keloids in both ears, twice the size than the first time. We did the second surgical intervention to remove it, but with the patient’s commitment that he would correctly comply with the guidelines determined by the surgical team. After finishing all the steps and a post-operative for the case, we observed the satisfaction and the increase of the patient’s mood, happier and without the embarrassment of that physical defect.

Evaluation of the Coagulating Potential of the Crude Extract from the Barbatimão Bark for the Treatment of Dairy Effluents

The coagulating potential of the crude extract from the barbatimao bark for the treatment of dairy effluent was assessed and compared with industrial coagulants such as aluminum sulfate (inorganic coagulant), the crude extract of black wattle bark (used in the manufacture of natural organic coagulants), and gallic acid (the main constituent of condensed tannins). The aqueous extract of barbatimao was obtained by refluxing for 12 h, and the black wattle was provided by a producer of natural coagulants. The determinations of total phenolic compounds and tannins in the extracts were performed by the Folin-Ciocalteu method and precipitation with casein, respectively. The treatment of the effluent with coagulant was performed by the Jar-Test. After testing, the effluent was evaluated for turbidity, total solids, and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD). A higher content of phenolic compounds (19.81% mg of gallic acid/g extract) was observed in the barbatimao extract than in the black wattle extract (14.24% mg of gallic acid/g extract). However, the extracts contained the same amount of tannins, 13.95% for the barbatimao extract and 12.89% for the black wattle extract. A 63%, reduction in BOD was observed for the effluent treated with barbatimao extract, 35% for the black wattle extract, 58% for gallic acid and 60.59% for the treatment with aluminum sulfate. Treatment with gallic acid caused a 98% reduction in the turbidity of the effluent;with aluminum sulfate, a 97% reduction was obtained;with barbatimao extract, 96%, and with black wattle extract, 93%. The barbatimao extract was shown to be a potential coagulant for dairy effluents.
