This work presents a short and very efficient method to produce high performance textured Ca_3Co_4O_9 thermoelectric materials through initial powders modification. Microstructure has shown good grain orientation, and low porosity while slightly lower grain sizes were obtained in samples prepared from attrition milled powders. All samples show the high density of around 96% of the theoretical *** similar characteristics are reflected in, approximately,the same electrical resistivity and Seebeck coefficient values for both types of samples. however, in spite of similar power factor(PF) at low temperatures, it is slightly higher at high temperature for the attrition milled samples. On the other hand, the processing time reduction(from 38 to 2 h) when using attrition milled precursors, leads to lower mechanical properties in these samples. All these data clearly point out to the similar characteristics of both kinds of samples, with a drastic processing time decrease when using attrition milled precursors, which is of the main economic importance when considering their industrial production.

AIM： To assess the effects of Sb on fecal flora and shortchain fatty acids （SCFA） in patients on long-term TEN. METhODS： Ten patients （3 females, 7 males, 59±5.5 years）, on TEN for a median of 13 mo （1-125）, and 15 healthy volunteers （4 females, 11 males, 32±2.0 years） received Sb （0.5 g bid PO） for 6 d. Two stool samples were taken before, on the last 2 d and 9-10 d after treatment, for SCFA measurement and for culture and bacterial identification. Values （mean4-SE） were compared using sign tests and ANOVA. RESULTS： Fecal butyrate levels were lower in patients （10.1±2.9 mmol/kg） than in controls （19.2±3.9, P= 0.02）. Treatment with Sb increased total fecal SCFA levels in patients （150.2＋27.2 vs 107.5±18.2 mmol/kg, P= 0.02） but not in controls （129.0±28.6 vs 113.0±15.2 mmol/kg, NS）. At the end of treatment with Sb, patients had higher fecal butyrate（16.0±4.4 vs 10.1 [2.9] mmol/kg, P= 0.004）. Total SCFAs remained high 9 d after treatment was discontinued. Before the treatment, the anaerobe to aerobe ratio was lower in patients compared to controls （2.4±2.3 vs 69.8±1.8, P= 0.003）. There were no significant changes in the fecal flora of TEN patients. CONCLUSION： Sb-induced increase of fecal SCFA concentrations （especially butyrate） may explain the preventive effects of this yeast on TEN-induced diarrhea.

AIM： To determine whether the hematocrit （hct） at admission or at 24 h after admission was associated with severe acute pancreatitis （AP）, organ failure （OF）, and pancreatic necrosis. METhODS： A total of 336 consecutive patients with a first AP episode were studied. Etiology, hct values at admission and at 24 h, development of severe AP according to Atlanta＇s criteria, pancreatic necrosis, OF and mortality were recorded. hemoconcentration was defined as hct level 〉44% for males and 〉40% for females. The t-test and ;x^2 test were used to assess the association of hemoconcentration to the severity, necrosis and OF. Diagnostic accuracy was also determined. RESULTS： Biliary disease was the most frequent etiology （n = 148）. Mean hct levels at admission were 41±6% for females and 46±7% for males （P〈0.01）. Seventyeight （23%） patients had severe AP, and OF developed in 45 （13%） patients. According to contrast-enhanced computed tomography scan, 36% （54/150） patients showed pancreatic necrosis. hct levels were elevated in 58% （55/96） and 61% （33/54） patients with interstitial and necrotizing pancreatitis, respectively. Neither hct levels at admission nor hemoconcentration at 24 h were associated with the severity, necrosis or OF. Sensitivity, specificity and positive predictive values for both determinations were very low; and negative predictive values were between 61% and 86%, being the highest value for OF. CONCLUSION： hct is not a useful marker to predict a worse outcome in acute pancreatitis. In spite of the high negative predictive value of hemoconcentration, the prognosis gain is limited due to an already high incidence of mild disease.

Nutrient flux,net metabolism,and N2 fixation and denitrification processes were estimated and compared in two semi-arid subtropical coastal lagoons in the Gulf of California:El Soldado(ES),where no wastewater is discharged,and El Rancho(ER),where shrimp farm effluents are regularly *** processes were evaluated with the LOICZ *** time wash *** fluxes were higher in ER than in ES and both systems acted as nutrient sinks for most of the *** showed a larger nutrient flow rate in the summer and autumn due to the input of shrimp-farm *** fluxes increased in both ER and ES in the winter in response to the increased nutrient supply from coastal *** and ES both showed autotrophic metabolism and N2 fixation in the spring,autumn,and winter,but heterotrophic metabolism and denitrification in the *** dominated in ER(−2.21 mmol m^(2)day^(−1))and values were higher than those estimated in ES(−0.45 mmol m^(2)day^(−1)).The comparative analysis between ES and ER evidenced the significant changes in its biogeochemical performance caused by the input of anthropogenic nutrients,and can orient the environmental management of coastal lagoons.

Background： Removal of the follicular content by ultrasound-guided transvaginal follicle aspiration（TVFA） may fail to induce immediate atresia and loss of function, resulting in the occurrence of residual follicles（RF）. The aims of this study were to characterize the blood flow in RF and to determine the effects of the treatment with estradiol benzoate on RF fate. Lactating, cyclic holstein-Gir crossbred cows were used. In Experiment 1, follicular wave emergence（D0） was synchronized in cows（n = 10） and follicular growth was then monitored by transrectal ultrasonography from D0 to D8, followed by TVFA of the largest follicle present on the ovaries 24 h later. Color Doppler ultrasound imaging was used to examine blood flow on the follicular wall, which was recorded immediately before and every 12 h after TVFA, up to 72 h. In experiment 2, cows（n = 22） were randomly allocated to receive either 2 mL of saline i.m.（Control group, n = 11） or 2 mL estradiol benzoate i.m.（EB group, n = 11）immediately after TVFA. Ovaries were scanned every 12 h to confirm the presence and to measure the diameter of RF. The contents of the RF, if present, were collected 72 h after the first TVFA, using the same aspiration *** fluid from original follicles and RF were stored at-20 °C until hormonal ***： In Experiment 1, there was no reduction（P 〉 0.05） of blood flow in the remaining follicle walls after TVFA and maximum blood flow values were observed at 49.5 ± 19.7 h post-TVFA. In Experiment 2, formation of RF after TVFA was proportionally similar between Controls（5/9） and EB（5/10） cows. Also, RF diameter did not differ between groups（P 〉 0.05）.
