Risk f.ctors f.r Surgical Site Inf.ction af.er Hip Arthroplasty: A Multicentric Study

The objective of.this study is to answer three main questions: What is the risk of.wound inf.ction f.r patients undergoing hip arthroplasty? What are the main etiologicagents of.surgical site inf.ction (SSI)? What are the risk f.ctors most associated with surgical site inf.ction? Method: This was a multicentric, retrospective cohort study which analyzed data collected in f.ve general hospitals in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, between the period of.January 2009 and December 2013. The continuous parameters studied were age, length of.hospital stay bef.re surgery, duration of.surgery, number of.prof.ssionals at surgery and number of.hospital admissions. Categorical variables were surgical wound classif.cation (clean, clean contaminated, contaminated, dirty/inf.cted), American Society of.Anesthesiologists (ASA) score (I, II, III, IV, V), type of.surgery (elective, emergency), general anesthesia (yes, no), prophylactic antibiotic (yes, no), trauma surgery (yes, no) and Nosocomial Inf.ctions Surveillance (NNIS) risk index (IRIC = 0, 1, 2, 3). Results: Estimated SSI risk was 3.2% (95% C.I. = 2.6% to 4.1%) and risk of.osteomyelitis was 0.6% (95% C.I. = 0.4% to 1.1%). ASA score > 2, general anesthesia, length of.hospital stay bef.re surgery higher than f.ur days, more than two prof.ssionals at surgical f.eld and duration of.surgery higher than f.ve hours were risk f.ctors f.r SSI af.er hip prosthesis (p f.nal multiple logistic regression analysis indicated that the modif.ed NNIS risk was independently associated with surgical site inf.ction af.er arthroplasty of.hip. Conclusion: Despite the modif.ed NNIS index being a risk f.ctor f.r SSI, none of.its independent variables was statistically signif.cantly in the logistic model (p > 0.100). Each modif.ed NNIS risk category increased the chance of.a patient being inf.cted by almost three times, when compared with the previous category (OR = 2.82;p = 0.011).

About Quantum Mechanics without Hamiltonians

An extension of.Shrödinger’s quantization on the space (x, p), where the Hamiltonian approach is needed, is made on the space (x, v) where the Hamiltonian approach is not needed at all. The purpose of.this paper is to give a possible extension of.the actual f.rmulation of.the Quantum Mechanics, and this is achieved through a f.nction K(x, v, t) which takes the place of.the Hamiltonian on the Shrödinger’s equation and has units of.energy. This approach allows us to include the quantization of.classical velocity depending problems (dissipative) and position depending mass variation problems. Some examples are given.

Newtonian Gravitational Radiation and Waves

In this paper, we review historical Maxwell's equation f.r gravity and recent studies on the lack of.curvature of.linear dipole gravitational waves. The extended Newton's gravity necessarily has the continuity equation f.r the conservation of.mass, and with the Gauss' equation associated to gravitational time depending f.eld R, bring about a new f.eld W which resembles the magnetic f.eld in Electrodynamics. Although this f.eld has not been f.und yet, its existence comes f.om a strong mathematical statement, and it is shown that linear dipole gravitational waves have their origin in extended Newton theory of.gravity. This is a direct mathematical consequence of.Gauss' law and the continuity equation f.r the density of.mass and current, and as a direct result of.this, any accelerated mass will emit mainly dipole gravitational radiation. Then, one concludes that dipole gravitational waves can have its origin on the extended Newton's gravity equations.

Intravascular Access in Chelonia mydas and Dermochelys coriacea Using the Seldinger Technique U Itrasou nd-Guided

Strand-ed turtles need f.uid parenterally. The jugular access is best f.r the maintenance and patency of.the catheter. The Seldinger technique guided by ultrasound seems to be the saf.st f.r catheter insertion. f.ve juveniles Chelonia mydas with f.bropapillomatosis and an adult male leatherback turtle （Dermochelys coriacea） with altered buoyancy were sent to Santos Municipal Aquarium f.r rehabilitation. Turtles underwent catheterization of.the jugular vein using the Seldinger technique with central venous polyurethane catheter monolumen 14 G to Dermochelys and 18 G f.r Chelonia, guided by ultrasound with 10 MHz transducer catheters were sutured to the skin and animals were subjected to f.uid. In all turtles, the catheters were patency and were well established. There were no granulomatous reactions or related inf.ctions. The Dermochelys improved clinically af.er f.uid resuscitation, and the catheter was removed one week af.er. In one Chelonia excision was 21% of.its weight in tumors, and the animals received colloid catheter by enabling the mitigation of.bleeding due to removal. The use of.ultrasonography has enabled monitoring of.all access as the patency of.the catheter and f.uid dif.usivity.

A Neural Based Modeling Approach f.r Drying Kinetics Analysis of.Mint Branches and Their f.actions (Leaves and Stems)

This work is aimed at investigating regular mint (Mentha × villosa) drying behavior and assessing how the heterogeneous composition of.plants af.ects their drying kinetics. Drying kinetics and sorption isotherms were evaluated f.r whole branches and their f.actions (leaves and stems). Stems and leaves were characterized by measurement of.dimensions, apparent density and initial moisture content. The moisture sorption isotherms were obtained under temperatures of.30°C, 40°C and 50°C f.r branches, stems and leaves and the data were f.tted to the GAB model. Mint branches and their f.actions were oven dried at temperatures f.om 40°C to 70°C?and were obtained kinetic curves f.r each part. Water sorption patterns were similar f.r leaves and stems and the GAB model described well the sorption behavior of.both materials. At a constant temperature, the drying rates were higher f.r leaves in comparison to stems and the dif.erences increased as the temperature was raised. Theref.re, depending on drying conditions, the moisture distribution in dried branches might be signif.cantly dif.erent. Since the leaves constitute the major f.action in branches, the drying rates of.branches were closer to those of.leaves. The kinetic curves were f.tted to a dif.usion model based on an analytical solution of.f.ck’s second dif.usion law and to an empirical model based on artif.cial neural network (ANN). The results showed that the model based on the ANN predicted the drying kinetics of.the dif.erent parts better than the dif.usive model. A single network was built to describe the kinetic behavior of.branches and f.actions in the whole range of.temperatures investigated. The dif.usive model based on f.tting ef.ective dif.usivity did not provide good predictions of.moisture content, probably because neither the dependence of.ef.ective dif.usivity on the moisture content nor the heterogeneity and shrinking of.static beds were considered.

f.r explicitly time depending mass density which satisf.es a continuity equation, it is shown that Maxwell-like equations f.r gravitational f.eld f.llow naturally without any need of.General Relativity Theory approximation or related assumptions. As a consequence, it is shown that several f.atures already known in Electrodynamics (Poynting vector, density of.energy, tensor stress, and radiation) are totally reproduced f.r gravitational f.eld.

In Silico Screening of.Potential Drug with Antileishmanial Activty and Validation of.their Activity by in Vitro and in Vivo Studies

The research on discovery and development of.new treatments f.r cutaneous leishmaniasis has been declared as priority. Using bioinf.rmatics approaches, this study aimed to identif. antileishmanial activity in drugs that are currently used as anti-inf.ammatory and wound healing by such anti-Leishmania activity was validated by in vitro and in vivo assays. In silico analysis identif.ed 153 compounds f.om which 87 were selected by data mining of.DrugBank database, 22 and 44 were detected by PASS （http：//***） and BLAST （http：//***. gov/） alignment, respectively. The majority of.identif.ed drugs are used as skin protector, anti-acne, anti-ulcerative （wound healer） or anti-inf.ammatory and f.w of.them had specif.c antileishmanial activity. The ef.icacy as antileishmanial was validated in vitro in 12/23 tested compounds and in all seven compounds that were evaluated in in vivo assays. Notably, this is the f.rst report of.antileishmanial activity f.r adapalene. In conclusion, bioinf.rmatics tools not only can help to reduce time and cost of.the drug discovery process but also may increase the chance that candidates identif.ed in silico which have a validated antileishmanial activity by combining dif.erent biological properties.

Propranolol hydrochloride can be considered a persistent and bioaccumulative pharmaceutical in the *** drug and its by-products are potentially toxic and have adverse ef.ects,since these compounds have been associated with endocrine-disrupting ef.ects,reproductive def.ciencies,embryo abnormalities and pericardial ***_(2)–La 0.05%–carboxymethyl-β-cyclodextrin(CMCD)nanoparticles were successf.lly prepared by a simple two-step method,which consists of.sonif.cation and *** characterization analyses reveal that lanthanum is dispersed on the semiconductor surf.ce,probably f.rming Ti–O–La bonds,which can induce oxygen vacancies and surf.ce def.cts that ef.ectively restrain the recombination of.photogenerated electron/holes *** ef.iciency of.TiO_(2)–La 0.05%–CMCD samples in degradation of.propranolol under UV-light irradiation is higher than that of.pristine TiO_(2) within 20 min reaction,probably due to complex f.rmation between theβ-blocker and the oligosaccharide,which allows us to propose a photocatalytic mechanism based on the f.rmation of.intermediates and competition of.these compounds to the radicals and CMCD cavities.

Generalization of.the f.rce Approach to Radiation Reaction

A new approach to radiation reaction f.r the correction of.the linear and circular motion of.a charged particle takes into account the emission of.electromagnetic radiation due to its acceleration. This new f.rmulation was based on expressing the radiation reaction f.rce in terms of.the external f.rce rather than the acceleration of.the charge. In this paper, a generalization of.the radiation reaction f.rce in terms of.the external f.rce approach is f.rmulated f.r any arbitrary motion of.the charged particle. This generalization includes the linear and circular acceleration cases previously investigated.

In the diamond C12 (nuclear spin zero) structure with a linear chain of C13 (nuclear spin one half) atoms is applied to a transverse static field with respect of this linear chain, having a gradient along the linear chain, and it is also applied to an rf-magnetic field in a plane with a component in the direction of the static field. It is shown that one qubit rotation, the Controlled-Not (CNOT), the Controlled-Controlled-NoT (CCNOT) quantum gates, and teleportation algorithm can be implemented on this structure using integer multiples of electromagnetic π-pulses. Therefore, a quantum computer can be constructed in this form.
