Risk of Waterb.rne Parasitic Infection among Vegetab.es Producers in the City of Ouagadougou, b.rkina Faso: An Attempt to Quantify Them Using the Quantitative Microb.ological Risk Assessment Method

The use of wastewater in urb.n agriculture has b.en promoted as an alternative to water scarcity and as a means to increase soil fertilizer. However, the use of wastewater in urb.n agriculture raises major pub.ic health concerns, mainly due to the often high concentration of pathogenic micro-organisms. Waterb.rne parasites are a major health concern in this regard, especially in endemic areas, mainly due to the high environmental resistance of eggs/cysts comb.ned with a low infectious dose. In this study, the parasitological risk to vegetab.es producers in Ouagadougou using polluted water was evaluated through the quantitative microb.ological risk analysis method. For this purpose, the search for and quantification of viab.e parasite eggs and cysts in irrigation water was coupled with epidemiological surveillance of vegetab.es producers in Ouagadougou. Protozoa and helminths b.longing to 9 species were recorded and samples analyzed. These include Ancylostoma sp., Ascaris lumb.icoides, tapeworm’s sp, Strongyloides stercoralis, Entamoeb. histolytica, Giardia lamb.ia. Despite the variab.lity of isolated parasitic species, Ancylostoma sp. eggs were common and severe to all types of water. Moreover, epidemiological approach showed that there were more parasitic species found in irrigation water and also other parasitic species circulating among vegetab.e farmers. In addition, there is no statistical significant association b.tween the type of water used for irrigation and the carried parasites b. vegetab.e gardeners. However, contamination of the groups using the raw wastewater is once higher than those using well water. When one is interested in the groups using treated wastewater as a source of irrigation, these risks of contaminations are halved. In b.rkina Faso, human activities are practiced in Nazinga Game Ranch (NGR) which is colonized b. West African crocodiles Crocodylus suchus (Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire 1807) decades ago. This study which aims to estimate impact of anthropogenic activities on ab.ndance of C. suchus has b.en conducted in NGR reservoirs. For data collection, C. suchus populations were counted morning, afternoon and night from Octob.r 2015 to May 2017 in 11 reservoirs. b.noculars were used for remote ob.ervations and spotlight was used b. night. According to the size of the sites and its accessib.lity, direct ob.ervations were carried out on foot or b. canoe. Every time we ob.erved crocodiles, they were numb.red and added information such as their size, their b.havior, geographical coordinates and the type of hab.tat were collected. Human activities were noted after direct ob.ervations. The R software version 3.5.3 was used for data analysis. A total of 1849 crocodiles including hatchlings, juveniles, sub.dults and adults were counted in these 11 reservoirs of the NGR. They were more ab.ndant in reservoirs than rivers with highest ab.ndances in Akalon, Akwazena, Kalieb.ulou and b.rka. Crocodile showed very high visib.lity at night their ab.ndances showed important correlation with human activities and environmental factors such as roads, fishing, tourism, moon phases and “died crocodiles” and in NGR.

We reported a case of an intravesical foreign b.dy in a 16 years old teenager for ab.rtion attempt. During laparotomy for suspected pelvic appendicitis, we incidentally discovered an intravesical foreign b.dy. From this first ob.ervation in our urology division, we reviewed the literature on the nature and circumstance of self introduction in b.adder of foreign b.dy and their surgical ab.ation. We emphasized the importance of endoscopy as a support of diagnosis and therapeutic of intravesical foreign b.dy. This ob.ervation also highlighted the lack of information in our teenagers ab.ut reproductive and sexual health.

Erectile Dysfunction among Diab.tic Men in Two Medical Centers in b.rkina Faso: Epidemiological, Diagnosis and Therapeutic Aspects

Ob.ective: To study erectile dysfunction in diab.tic patients seen in two clinics in the city of b.b.-Dioulasso, b.rkina Faso. Materials and Methods: A prospective cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted at the Souro Sanou Teaching Hospital (CHUSS) and the Saint Leopold clinic in b.b.-Dioulasso, from March 1 to Septemb.r 1, 2012. A total of 107 patients data were collated and analysed, which was then grouped into two: the ED group, designating patients with erectile dysfunction and the NED group consisting of those patients without. The sample comprised of 61 patients with types 1 and 2 diab.tesand were aged b.tween 25-70 years. The IIEF-5 was used to evaluate erectile dysfunction. Results: The prevalence of erectile dysfunction was 57%. The average age of patients was 54.4 ± 8.3 years. All patients with ED had type 2 diab.tes. The mean disease duration of diab.tes was 7.2 ± 6 years. Erectile dysfunction was severe in 32.8% of cases, moderate in 31.1% of cases and mild in 36.1%. Its severity was significantly associated with glycated hemoglob.n, triglycerides and b.I. Phosphodiesterase types 5 (PDE5) inhib.tors were found to b. effective in the treatment of erectile dysfunction with a satisfactory therapeutic response in 77.4% of users. Conclusion: Erectile dysfunction is a common complication in diab.tic patients. Its occurrence and severity are influenced b. several factors. The potential presence of this disorder should b. assessed due to its negative impact on quality of life. Phosphodiesterase type 5 inhib.tors are an effective treatment modality in diab.tic patients.

Assessement of Nutritional Status of Households Using Weighed Food Intake in North West Region of Cameroon

This study determined the nutritional status of households in North western region of Cameroon using weighed food intake. Twenty–two rural and 106 urb.n households were randomly selected for weighed food intake Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyze collected data and significance at p b.rry was the most frequently consumed meal with little or no animal-source protein. Protein and b.group vitamins intake of respondents in b.th communities were b.low the FAO/WHO recommended values while energy, iron, and vitamins A and C were in excess for most age groups. Adolescents 10 - 19 years and adults 20 years and ab.ve failed to meet at least 85% of RNI for calcium.

AIM： To report the results of two phase Ⅱ studies of chemotherapy in patients with platinum-resistant and platinum-refractory ovarian cancer and discuss the cur-rent status of systemic therapy in this ***： Two sub.equent Austrian Arb.itsgemein-schaft für Gynkologische Onkologie （AGO） phase Ⅱ studies have b.en carried out. Patients either had platinum-refractory or platinum-resistant disease, i.e., disease progression during first line platinum-b.sed therapy or recurrence within 6 mo following the last platinum-containing chemotherapy, respectively. In the first study, 6 cycles of irinotecan at 55 mg/m2 and docetaxel 25 mg/m2 were b.th administered on days 1, 8 and 15 of a 4 wk cycle. In the second phase Ⅱ study, either non-pegylated （PEG） liposomal doxorub.-cin （L-DXR） 60 mg/m2 monotherapy on day 1 and PEG filgrastim on day 2 （arm A） or L-DXR at 50 mg/m2 and gemcitab.ne （GEM） at 650 mg/m2 on day 1 and GEM on day 8 （arm b. were administered every 4 wk. Patients in arm b.received prophylactic filgrastim 5 μg/kg per day from days 3 to 6 and from days 9 to 12, respec-tively. RESULTS： Response rates in studies were 14% and 17%, respectively. The progression-free survival was less than 3 mo. Diarrhea was most prevalent in patients treated with irinotecan ＋ docetaxel, while stomatitis/mucositis occurred in a quarter of patients treated with L-DXR ＋/- GEM ＋ granulocyte colony stimulating factor, respectively. Following treatment with the latter regi-men, a total of 11 serious adverse events were record-ed among the 12 patients included. The rate of remis-sions of the regimens used in these two Austrian AGOstudies was low and their toxicity significant. Due to their low therapeutic index, neither of these regimens can b. recommended in this heavily pretreated patient population with platinum-resistant ovarian cancer ex-hib.ting a high tumor-associated symptom b.rden. The coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) have long b.en considered to b. low pathogenicity. The possib.lity of a horizontal transfer of resistance and virulence genes from S. aureus to CoNS could increase the pathogenicity of these b.cteria. The ob.ective of this work is to contrib.te to a b.tter knowledge of the pathogenicity of (CoNS) strains isolated from surfaces and medico-technical materials of the University Hospital of Ab.mey-Calavi/Sô-Ava. Seventy strains of CoNS isolated from surfaces and medico-technical materials of the University Hospital of Ab.mey-Calavi were tested for methicillin resistance. The resistance to methicillin was evaluated phenotypically b. the resistance of the strains to cefoxitin and then confirmed b. the search for the mecA gene using PCR. The genes encoding staphylococcal chromosomal cassette (SCCmec) types I, II and III originally found in S. aureus were tested in CoNS b. multiplex PCR using specific primers. All the strains studied showed resistance to methicillin. However, only 28.5% (20/70) carried the mecA gene. SCCmec was identified in only 17.14% (12/70) of these strains. Four strains carried mecA gene as well as one of the three types of SCCmec searched. SCCmec types I, II and III were identified in CoNS strains studied. SCCmec type I was the most frequent chromosomal cassette in mecA+ strains, only or in association with another SCCmec. The study also revealed methicillin-resistant strains carrying SCCmec lacking the mecA gene. Finally, 60% (12/20) of the strains were found to b. non-typeab.e. Our results show that CoNS strains present a high resistance to methicillin and the source of this resistance in the CoNS of our study is not only the mecA gene. There is also a high diversity of SCCmec, justified b. a large numb.r of non-typeab.e CoNS strains. The mecA− SCCmec+ methicillin-resistant strains deserve to b. sequenced for further studies.
