Hyperimmune sera (HIS), raised against crude giardia antigen, on in vitro interaction, caused more agglutination of Giardia lamblia trophozoites. Heat inactivated HIS possessed a comparable agglutinating activity as the non-inactivated controls. non-inactivated normal (unimmunized) serum caused immobilization of Giardia trophozoite, which was checked on heat inactivation. Antibodies in immune sera are mainly responsible for agglutination, whereas the heat labile non-immune components control the mobility of the intestinal parasite.

The guinea pigs were dermally exposed to nickel (ni), sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) and in their combination for 7 and 14 days. The exposure to ni and SLS produced changes in enzymes and lipid peroxidation in kidney. The exposure to ni or SLS depicted slight changes while combined exposure to ni plus SLS exhibited more degenerative changes in kidney. The result of the study suggests that industrial workers and/or populations exposed simultaneously to ni and SLS produces more damage to kidney.

The guinea pigs were dermally exposed to paraphenylenediamine (PPD) and in presence of an oxidising agent hydrogen peroxide for 15 and 30 d to assess their effects on some enzymes, lipid peroxidation and histamine contents in the skin. The activities of acid and alkaline phosphatases, β-glucuronidase, gamma glutamyl transpeptidase, histidase and tyrosinase were enhanced after application of either PPD or PPD plus hydrogen peroxide. The lipid peroxidation and histamine contents also showed marked elevation following exposure to the chemicals.

Spectrum of complicated migraine in children: A common profile in aid to clinical diagnosis

Complicated migraine encompasses several individual clinical syndromes of migraine. Such a syndrome in children frequently presents with various neurological symptoms in the Emergency Department. An acute presentation in the absence of headache presents a diagnostic challenge. A delay in diagnosis and treatment may have medicolegal implication. To date, there are no reports of a common clinical profile proposed in making a clinical diagnosis for the complicated migraine. In this clinical review, we propose and describe:(1) A common clinical profile in aid to clinical diagnosis for spectrum of complicated migraine;(2) How it can be used in differentiating complicated migraine from migraine without aura, migraine with aura, and seizure;(3) We discuss the status of complicated migraine in the International Headache Society classification 2013; and(4) In addition, a common treatment strategy for the spectrum of migraine has been described. To diagnose complicated migraine clinically, it is imperative to adhere with the proposed profile. This will optimize the use of investigation and will also avoid a legal implication of delay in their management. The proposed common clinical profile is incongruent with the International Headache Society 2013. Future classification should minimize the dissociation from clinically encountered syndromes and coin a single word to address collectively this subtype of migraine with an acute presentation of a common clinical profile.

The mining industry is leading towards a technology driven optimisation process. It has been realised that the unit operations such as drilling, blasting, excavation, loading, hauling and crushing are inter related variables in the total cost equations. Development, improvement and utilisation of innovative technologies are important for cost effectiveness of mineral industries. This paper explores the potential to exploit controls over the outputs of the primary blasting operation arising from developments in blast monitoring instruments and explosives technology. Blast design in Indian mines uses the method of trial and error to a large extent. As there cannot be a unique blast design that would serve the varied situations prevailing in mines, site specific and customised blast designs are required to accommodate the different blast environments encountered in the field with different geo-mining conditions. In this paper a new methodology has been proposed to design the blast in opencast coal mines. Blast monitoring studies have been conducted at three open pit coal mine in India. The mines are situated in Jharia and Singrauli Coalfield. The study has been conducted using high-resolution S-VHS video camera, velocity of detonation (VOD) recorder and seismographs.

A 58 year old white man who has had type 2 diabetes for 10 years is concerned about increasingly frequent hypoglycaemic episodes, usually in the late afternoon. He has been taking a stable, once daily dose of basal insulin glargine 14 units for two years, as well as twice daily gliclazide 160 mg and metformin 1000 rag. His body mass index is 23 (weight (kg)/ (height (m)2) ) and his weight is stable. He works in finance and has recently divorced.
