Using Network Embedding to Obtain a Richer and More Stable Network Layout for a Large Scale Bibliometric Network

Purpose: The goal of this study is to explore whether deep learning based embed ded models can provide a better visualization solution for large citation networks. De sign/methodology/approach: Our team compared the visualization approach borrowed from the deep learning community with the well-known bibliometric network visualization for large scale data. 47,294 highly cited papers were visualized by using three network embedding models plus the t-SNE dimensionality reduction technique. Besides, three base maps were created with the same dataset for evaluation purposes. All base maps used the classic Open Ord method with different edge cutting strategies and parameters. Findings: The network embedded maps with t-SNE preserve a very similar global structure to the full edges classic force-directed map, while the maps vary in local structure. Among them, the Node2Vec model has the best overall visualization performance, the local structure has been significantly improved and the maps' layout has very high *** limitations: The computational and time costs of training are very high for network em bedded models to obtain high dimensional latent vector. Only one dimensionality reduction technique was tested. Practical implications: This paper demonstrates that the network embedding models are able to accurately reconstruct the large bibliometric network in the vector space. In the future, apart from network visualization, many classical vector-based machine learning algorithms can be applied to network representations for solving bibliomet ric analysis tasks. Originality/value: This paper provides the first systematic comparison of classical science mapping visualization with network embedding based visualization on a large scale dataset. We showed deep learning based network embedding model with t-SNE can provide a richer,more stable science map. We also designed a practical evaluation method to investigate and compare maps.

Open Building as a Design Approach for Adaptability in Chinese Public Housing

Surveys on public housing in Northern China indicated that the common aim of Chinese public housing, which is to provide affordable housing, had been mostly satisfied. However, more than one fourth (29.9%) of the public housing units that were investigated were structurally modified by their occupiers for different layouts. This situation indicated that a fixed plan could not fulfill housing occupiers’ various requirements on spacing layout, and critical awareness had been shown that the adaptability of the public housing units was always ignored. Open Building is well organized and implemented in the field of residential area to increase adaptability and sustainability of dwellings. This paper reviewed the development of residential Open Building and attempted to reveal solutions for the design of adaptability in Chinese public housing. Based on the dwelling unit types, dwelling spaces, living modes and demographic conditions of the public housing units were investigated;and concerning the actual carried out adaptations in the public housing units, this research explored two levels of design and control methods: prototyping unit for possible layouts and flexible partitions for space-function reconfiguration. By adding design values of adaptability in public housing, key aspects showing?the potentials and challenges for the design of public housing were summarized for future reference.

In view of the current situation of aging, functional decline and protection difficulties in historic blocks, the feasibility of commercial regeneration is discussed. Referring to the relevant theories of protection and renewal of historic blocks, field investigation and expert consultation, fuzzy evaluation method and analytic hierarchy process are introduced to carry out a research study on the spatial adaptability of historic blocks for commercial regeneration and establish a preliminary evaluation system. An example of Dongguan Street Historic Block in Dalian is used to test the evaluation system. This provides a basis for the formulation of commercial regeneration strategy in the next stage.

Lactobacillus rhamnosus RL-H3-005 ameliorates allergic airway inflammation by modulating the gut microbiota in asthmatic mice

The symptoms of allergic airway disease are impacted by the interplay of gut microbiota， which may be modulated by probiotics. This study aimed to investigate the potential anti-inflammatory effects of three lactic acid bacteria (LAB) on allergic asthma through modulation of the gut microbiota. Ovalbumin (OVA)-induced asthmatic mice were treated with three LAB strains， and their gut microbiota profiles were analyzed using 16S rRNA sequencing. Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) from mice fed with Lactobacillus rhamnosus RL-H3-005 was administered to OVA-induced asthmatic mice. The results demonstrated that RL-H3-005 effectively reduced inflammatory infiltrates in the lung and colon， as well as suppressed cytokine levels associated with allergic asthma compared to other strains. In addition， the supplementation of RL-H3-005 modulated the composition of gut microbiota in mice with allergic asthma. FMT results further supported the notion that modulating the gut microbiota with RL-H3-005 plays a crucial role in attenuating airway inflammatory symptoms in allergic asthma.

With the rapid development of urbanization, the Chinese government has put equal emphasis on construction and retrofitting. But those projects did not achieve optimal effect because of the lack of targeted and systematic design guidance system. In this study, it first analyzes existing retrofitting methods and sorts into five retrofitting types as a basis, and then, captures the combi-nations and permutations of retrofitting methods and materials by parts and layers to build a database. After that, it combines different kinds of ap-proaches by hierarchical matrix method to conclude the most efficient strat-egy. This study also selects typical residential buildings built between 1980 and 2000 in cold climate area of Northeast China as the research objects to test the integrity and effectiveness. As the results of this paper, it provides systematic guidance and multiple performance-based retrofitting strategies of the existing residential envelope system, which can improve indoor ther-mal comfort with low energy consumption.

Punicalagin has been demonstrated to exhibit anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties， but whether and how it could impact hypercholesterolemia remains not fully explored. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of punicalagin on hypercholesterolemia in mice and its related mechanisms. After 6 weeks’ intervention， punicalagin significantly reduced serum total cholesterol and low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels in mice fed a high-fat high-cholesterol (HFHC) diet. Meanwhile， punicalagin supplementation lowered hepatic cholesterol level， which corresponded to the down-regulation of cholesterol synthesis genes (Fdps， Cyp51) and up-regulated bile acid synthesis genes (Cyp7a1， Cyp27a1). In addition， bile acid reabsorption was retarded in punicalagin-fed mice through down-regulating ileal apical sodium-dependent BA transporter (ASBT). Furthermore， intestinal farnesoid X receptor (FXR)-fibroblast growth factor 15 (Fgf15) pathway was inhibited while hepatic FXR-small heterodimeric partner (SHP) pathway was activated in punicalagin group. Microbiota analysis and targeted metabolomics showed that punicalagin decreased the abundance of bile-salt hydrolase (BSH)-producing bacteria (Clostridiaceae and Bifidobacteriaceae) and the ratio of primary BAs to secondary BAs. In conclusion， the cholesterol-lowering effect of punicalagin partly through down-regulating cholesterol synthesis and increasing cholesterol catabolism， which could be achieved by regulating gut microbiota， altering bile acid composition and modulating FXR signaling pathway. These findings indicate the potential application of punicalagin-related products as an alternative strategy for hypercholesterolemia prevention and mitigation.
