This paper reports our primary effort in the quantitative reconstruction ofpaleoclimate based on the thrine in phytoecology of the affinity parent plants in the stratigraphicpollen records. The Eocene pollen data come from our former study on the Mingjia borehole 1 in theJianghan basin. The fluctuating trend in the parameter curve of climate shows that the climate inthe Middle Eocene in the Jianghan basin was more or less comparable with that of the present22°―26°N, characteristic of a humid, semi-humid central-southern subtropical climate. The annualtemperature at that time dropped by 1 ℃― 4 ℃ in the Late Eocene, approximately equal to that ofthe present 23.―28°N of northern-central subtropical climate. However, the climate composite atthat time, characterized by higher temperature, small annual range and big fluctuation inprecipitation, was quite different from the present one. The average temperature in January in theMiddle Eocene, higher than that of today, ranged between 5 ℃ and 9 ℃, indicating that no effect ofwinter monsoon occurred in the Middle Eocene, though such an effect may have occurred occasionallyin the Late Eocene. Major temperature decline is recognized at the depth of 2 100 m in the borehole,as was indicated by the decline in average January temperature, the increase in annual range, andthe increase in the deciduous broad-leaved types of trees in the spore-pollen assemblage. The sharpfluctuation in the annual precipitation, usually raging from 3.0 to 1 700 mm, was favorable for themigration and accumulation of salty deposit. When the precipitation was lower than 1 000 mm,ephemera shrub increased at the same depth as that of the salty deposit. It is, therefore, deducedthat the formation of the salty deposit was attributed mainly to the dry and hot environment in thehigh mountains and deep basins. The small annual precipitation and the intense fluctuation arefavorable for the sustainable accumulation of the salts, which is different from the present

In this study we examine the relationships between Abies and Picea abundance in surface pollen and sub-alpine coniferous forest(SCF) distribution,elevation and climate in the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau using a large modern pollen data set consisting of 857 *** indicate that Abies and Picea pollen are abundant in the southern and eastern Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau,where SCF dominates the *** percentages of both Abies and Picea show a unimodal pattern with changes in elevation and climate,and their optima occur at elevations from 2500 to 4000m a.s.l.,mean annual temperature from -1 to 10℃and mean annual precipitation from 450 to 850 *** optimal elevation of Abies and Picea pollen distribution decreases with latitude from c.4000 m in the south(21-3.°N) to c.2500 m in the north(43.49°N).

This study investigates the distribution of modern pollen assemblages in the Qjnghai-Tibetan Plateau, china,based on surface soil samples collected at 1202 sites along an altitudinal gradient of 10 -5500 m asl,where mean annual precipitation(MAP) ranges from 12 to 1840 mm and mean annual temperature(MAT) from -1 to 21.5℃.A total of 153.pollen taxa were found with relative abundances greater than 1%in at least two *** correspondence analysis(CCA) was used to determine the main environmental variables influencing pollen *** results reveal that MAP is the most significant dominant ***,MAT,altitude(ALT),July temperature(MT7),and relative humidity(HHH) are also significant variables that clearly follow the gradients in the CCA ordination, suggesting that pollen assemblages probably not only reflect a single climatic parameter,but also a variety of other climatic inter-related parameters. Transfer functions,based on locally weighted weighted averaging(LWWA),were developed for MAP (R-boot = 0.89,RMSEP = 109 mm),MAT(R-boot = *** = 2.3.),ALT(R-boot = 0.73. RMSEP = 597 m),HHH(R-boot = 0.82,RMSEP = 4.5%),and July mean precipitation(MP7)(R- boot = 0.87,RMSEP = 23.ram).Overall,our results confirm that pollen can provide reliable estimates of the primary climatic *** application of the LWWA model to the fossil records of Chen Co Lake allowed quantitative inferences to be made about Holocene climatic changes in the southern Tibetan Plateau,suggesting that LWWA is a robust calibration method for quantitative palaeo-environ-mental reconstruction based on pollen data in the regions.

A 16000-year pollen record of Qinghai Lake and its paleoclimate and paleoenvironment

The paleoclimate and paleoenvironment of Qinghai Lake indicated by a 16000-year pollen record are as follows. It was very cold and dry before 15200 years. During the Late Glacial, the climate varied from colder and semiarid to cool and semi-humid and fluctuated frequently but with little amplitude. Three cold events in the periods of 13.00-13.00, 11600-12000, and 11000-10400 aBP respectively correspond to the Oldest Dryas, Older Dryas and Younger Dryas events, whereas the two warm periods between them, 12000-13.00 and 11600-11000 aBP, respectively correspond to Boiling and Allerod periods. The temperature increased abruptly after the Younger Dryas event, and then the climate gradually turned to be warm and wet from warm and semiarid. In the Holocene, the largest amplitude of cold event that occurred at ca. 8200 aBP is quite prominent. The Holocene climatic optimum culminated at 6700 aBP.
