A serial of protonated and layered transition metal oxides, including layered HTaWO6, HNbMoO6 as well as HNbWO6, were synthesized by solid-state reaction and ion-exchange. The layered HTaWO6 has been systematically studied as a solid acid to realize the dehydration of fructose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF). The transition metal oxide samples were characterized with ICP-OES, EDS, XRD, XPS, SEM, TGA, FT-IR, N-2 adsorption-desorption and NH3-TPD. The influential factors such as reaction temperature, reaction time, solvent, catalyst amount and substrate concentration were deeply investigated. The optimized fructose conversion rate of 99% with HMF yield of 67% were achieved after 30 min at 140 degrees C in dimethylsulfoxide. An environmental input output model (EIOM) was introduced to the regional solid waste management sectors, which can reflect the direct and indirect relations between the environment and the regional economy development. Some details about how to use the EIOM was discussed. The EIOM was applied to the Changsha City in China. The example results indicate that much useful information related to the environment and the regional economy development can be gained from the solution of the EIOM. Thus, the EIOM can be used as a useful tool for the sustainable development planning including the solid waste management sectors.

In this study, both an atmospheric model [Weather Research and Forecasting(WRF) model] and an atmosphere(WRF)–ocean(Princeton Ocean Model;POM) coupled model are used to simulate the tropical cyclone(TC) Kaemi(2006). By comparing the simulation results of the models, effects of oceanic elements, especially the TC-induced sea surface temperature(SST) cooling, on the simulated TC size and destructiveness are identified and analyzed. The results show that there are no notable differences in the simulated TC track and its intensity between the uncoupled and coupled experiments;however, there are large differences in the TC size(i.e., the radius of gale-force wind)between the two experiments, and it is the TC-induced SST cooling that decreases the TC size. The SST cooling contributes to the decrease of air–sea moisture difference(ASMD) outside the TC eyewall, which subsequently leads to the decreases in surface enthalpy flux(SEF), radial sea-level pressure gradient, absolute vorticity advection, and wind speed outside the TC eyewall. As a result, the TC size and size-dependent TC destructive potential all decrease remarkably.

Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of cationic liposome-mediated CD40 ligand (CD40L) gene therapy for hepato- cellular carcinoma. Methods: 1×106 of parental H22 cells or H22 cells transfected with the expression vector containing murine CD40L cDNA encoding the entire coding region (pcDNA3.1+-mCD40L) were inoculated subcutaneously into the left flanks of syngenic BALB/C mice. The tumor-bearing mice (tumor nodules 10 mm in maximal diameter) received the treatment of the intratumoral injection of pcDNA3.1+-mCD40L/Transfectam, pcDNA3.1+, or phosphate-buffered saline (PBS), or no treatment. The mice were monitored for tumor growth weekly. We examined mCD40L messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) expression by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and the histologic changes in tumors at two weeks after intratumoral injection using immunohistochemical staining of tumor tissues. Results: All mice inoculated with parental H22 cells developed a tumor subcutaneously, and the tumor size increased progressively within three weeks. However, the mice receiving H22-CD40L cells exhibited complete regression of the tumor two weeks after tumor cell inoculation. The tumor-bearing animals with the treatment of pcDNA3.1+ or PBS, or without treatment had progressive tumor growth, while those mice treated with pcDNA3.1+-mCD40L exhibited a significant inhibition of tumor growth. RT-PCR analysis showed that 783-bp fragments cor- responding to the mCD40L mRNA were amplified only from pcDNA3.1+-mCD40L treated tumors. The tumor samples from pcDNA3.1+-mCD40L-treated mice showed significant lymphocyte infiltration, apoptotic bodies, and confluent necrosis in the tumor tissues. Conclusion: The tumorigenicity of CD40L-expressing cells was abrogated when the cells were implanted subcu- taneously. In vivo gene therapy of established liver tumor nodules in mice by the intratumoral injection of pcDNA3.1+-mCD40L led to significant tumor inhibition. There was mCD40L mRNA expression in the

Characterization of A-and B-type starch granules in Chinese wheat cultivars

Starch is the major component of wheat flour and serves as a multifunctional ingredient in food industry. The objective of the present study was to investigate starch granule size distribution of Chinese wheat cultivars, and to compare structure and functionality of starches in four leading cultivars zhongmai 175, CA12092, Lunxuan 987, and zhongyou 206. A wide variation in volume percentages of A- and B-type starch granules among genotypes was observed. Volume percentages of A- and B-type granules had ranges of 68.4–88.9% and 9.7–27.9% in the first cropping seasons, 74.1–90.1% and 7.2–25.3% in the second. Wheat cultivars with higher volume percentages of A- and B-type granules could serve as parents in breeding program for selecting high and low amylose wheat cultivars, respectively. In comparison with the B-type starch granules, the A-type granules starch showed difference in three aspects：（1） higher amount of ordered short-range structure and a lower relative crystallinity,（2） higher gelatinization onset（To） temperatures and enthalpies（ΔH）, and lower gelatinization conclusion temperatures（Tc）,（3） greater peak, though, and final viscosity, and lower breakdown viscosity and pasting temperature. It provides important information for breeders to develop potentially useful cultivars with particular functional properties of their starches suited to specific applications.

The effects of diabetes mellitus include long-term damages, dysfunctions, and failures of various organs. An important complication of diabetes is the disturbance in the male reproductive system. Glucose metabolism is an important event in spermatogenesis. Moreover, glucose metabolism is also important for maintaining basic cell activity, as well as specific functions, such as motility and fertilization ability in mature sperm. Diabetic disease and experimentally induced diabetes both demonstrated that either type 1 diabetes or type 2 diabetes could have detrimental effects on male fertility, especially on sperm quality, such as sperm motility, sperm DNA integrity, and ingredients of seminal plasma. Epigenetic modifications are essential during spermatogenesis. The epigenetic regulation represents chromatin modifications including DNA methylation, histone modifications, remodeling of nucleosomes and the higher-order chromatin reorganization and noncoding RNAs. If spermatogenesis is affected during the critical developmental window, embryonic gonadal development, and germline differentiation, environmentally-induced epigenetic modifications may become permanent in the germ line epigenome and have a potential impact on subsequent generations through epigenetic transgenerational inheritance. Diabetes may influence the epigenetic modification during sperm spermatogenesis and that these epigenetic dysregulation may be inherited through the male germ line and passed onto more than one generation, which in turn may increase the risk of diabetes in offspring.

A compression algorithm is proposed in this paper for reducing the size of sensor data. By using a dictionary-based lossless compression algorithm, sensor data can be compressed efficiently and interpreted without decompressing. The correlation between redundancy of sensor data and compression ratio is explored. Further, a parallel compression algorithm based on MapReduce [1] is proposed. Meanwhile, data partitioner which plays an important role in performance of MapReduce application is discussed along with performance evaluation criteria proposed in this paper. Experiments demonstrate that random sampler is suitable for highly redundant sensor data and the proposed compression algorithms can compress those highly redundant sensor data efficiently.
