Effective use of FibroTest to generate decision trees in hepatitis C

AIM： To assess the usefulness of FibroTest to forecast scores by constructing decision trees in patients with chronic hepatitis C.METHODS： We used the C4.5 classification algorithm to construct decision trees with data from 261 patients with chronic hepatitis C without a liver biopsy. The FibroTest attributes of age, gender, bilirubin, apolipoprotein, haptoglobin, α2 macroglobulin, and γ-glutamyl transpeptidase were used as predictors, and the FibroTest score as the target. For testing, a 10-fold cross validation was used.RESULTS： The overall classification error was 14.9% （accuracy 85.1%）. FibroTest＇s cases with true scores of FO and F4 were classified with very high accuracy （18/20 for FO, 9/9 for FO-1 and 92/96 for F4） and the largest confusion centered on F3. The algorithm produced a set of compound rules out of the ten classification trees and was used to classify the 261 patients. The rules for the classification of patients in FO and F4 were effective in more than 75% of the cases in which they were tested.COnCLUSIOn： The recognition of clinical subgroups should help to enhance our ability to assess differences in fibrosis scores in clinical studies and improve our understanding of fibrosis progression,

Introduction:Huemul(Hippocamelus bisulcus Molina)is the most threatened flag species of Southern Patagonia,where conservation efforts were not effective to avoid the retraction of its distribution *** quality modeling can assist to design better management strategies for regional conservation *** objective was to elaborate one habitat suitability map for huemul,defining the environmental characteristics at landscape level,and determining the distribution of the suitable habitat inside the current natural reserve ***:We used a database of 453 records and explored 40 potential explanatory variables(climate,topographic,and landscape variables including human-related ones)to develop one habitat suitability map using the Environmental niche Factor Analysis(EnFA)for Santa Cruz province(Argentina).We combined the outputs in a GIS project using different shapes,including the current natural reserve ***:We defined the potential habitat for huemul,where forest edges and ecotone zones(e.g.,mainly alpine environments)were the most important environmental variables,as well as some forest types(e.g.,nothofagus pumilio).Habitat losses were found in the extreme potential distribution areas(northern and southern areas),probably related to the increasing ranch *** current natural reserve network maintains approximately half of the huemul potential habitat in Santa Cruz province,where national Parks presented the similar conservation importance than the Provincial natural ***:Habitat suitability model for huemul can be used as a decision support system for new management strategies at different landscape levels to improve the current conservation efforts.

Influence of steel jacket thickness on the RC bridges' seismic vulnerability

The seismic demands of bridges subjected to strong earthquakes are mostly concentrated on piers. The main objective of this study is to assess the seismic vulnerability of retrofitted bridges with steel jackets. It analyzes the influence of the steel jacket thickness on the seismic capacity and demand of bridges. The bridges in study have two simple supported spans with superstructure composed by AASHTO type girders and a substructure formed with one circular pier over a stiff foundation. They are located on the Pacific coast of Mexico that is a zone of high seismicity. The bridges seismic capacity are evaluated through nonlinear static analyses and the shear force and displacement demands were determined using capacity spectra with a group of 10 real accelerograms from a subduction source. The response spectra were scaled to several peak ground accelerations(PGA) with the aim to estimate four damage scenarios linked each one to a probability of exceedance in a specific period, for return periods in the range of 72-3500 years that represent service level and maximum considered earthquake. Results show that the confining effect provided by the steel jackets substantially improves the seismic performance of the bridges piers. The increase of jacket thickness guides to important increments on columns base shear capacity, and the influence of the steel jacket thickness depends on the limit state and bridge slenderness ratio.

Forest management globally affects the ecosystem services,especially those related to ecosystem functioning and biodiversity conservation,by altering forest structure and *** degree of alteration was related to the intensity and type of harvesting;therefore,the major silvicultural challenge is to develop alternatives to mitigate climate change and maintain forest functions and biodiversity while also providing acceptable levels of timber *** retention forestry(VRF)is a highly flexible concept,with continuity of forest cover,structure,function,and species composition,thereby supporting multiple economic,environmental,and cultural *** special issue provides an overview of the concepts and applications related to VRF implementation around the *** shows that VRF has been applied globally for several decades,with varying levels and retention types,depending on local conditions and the economic importance of *** challenges of VRF seem to differ to some extent on different continents,yet the general aims have been accepted in most of the *** has been successful in mitigating many effects of intensive harvesting,though in some forests of the world,the retention levels are too low to maintain acceptable levels of biodiversity and ecosystem *** conclude that an active collaboration between scientists and forest practitioners is needed to realize all of the opportunities provided by VRF in solving global forestry-related issues.

Background:The European rabbit(Oryctolagus cuniculus L.1758)was introduced into different regions of the world,generating significant trade‑offs that critically impacted native ***,we evaluate the rabbit’s forage intakes in three vegetation types(forests,shrublands,and grasslands)along the four seasons in a temperate forest landscape in Southern Patagonia and discuss the potential threats over native *** formulated the following questions:(i)what is the forage offer at each vegetation type?(ii)what is the rabbit’s forage intake and how it varied across the seasons along the year?and(iii)which vegetation types and plant life forms were more used according to the rabbit’s forage intakes?Methods:We censused understory vegetation to characterize the forage offer at each vegetation type and determined seasonal dietary intakes using microhistological analysis of *** plant species identified in the field were grouped according to life form classes(tree regeneration,shrubs,forbs,graminoids,orchids,ferns,bryophytes,and hemiparasites).Data were analysed through uni‑and multi‑variate analyses,determining relationships between forage offer and the rabbit’s forage ***:Forage intakes revealed changes in plant life form consumption across vegetation types,where intake pressure was considerably different for tree regeneration(p=0.001),graminoids(p=0.001),and hemiparasites(p=0.001).Besides,significant changes in consumption among seasons were detected for shrubs(p=0.001),ferns(p=0.030),and hemiparasites(p=0.002).Although many species play an important role in the rabbit’s forage intake networks(e.g.,Chiliotrichum diffusum,Holcus lanatus),the strongest intake linkages were found in exotic grasses(e.g.,Poa pratensis and Festuca sp.),native hemiparasites(e.g.,Misodendrum sp.),native shrubs(e.g.,Empetrum rubrum),and native trees(e.g.,nothofagus sp.).The summer and autumn seasons presented higher intake compared to the winter and spring seasons.F

Proteus mirabilis, a motile Gram-negative bacterium, represents a common cause of complicated urinary tract infections. Autotransporters are a family of secreted proteins from Gram-negative bacteria that direct their own secretion across the outer membrane (type V autotransporter secretion mechanism). Serine protease autotransporters of Enterobacteriaceae (SPATEs) include adhesins, toxins, and proteases that can contribute to the virulence. Plasmid-encoded toxin (Pet) is the predominant protein in culture supernatants of enteroaggregative E. coli prototype strain 042 and has been extensively studied. Pet toxin is encoded on the 65-MDa adherence-related plasmid of EAEC 042 strain. In this work, Pet protein was found in the supernatant obtained from Proteus mirabilis RTX339 strain isolated from a psychiatric patient suffering complicated urinary tract infections (UTIs). The nucleotide sequence of pet gene was obtained using primers designed from E. coli 042 pet gene reported. The alignment of the sequence showed 100% identity with the pet gene reported. Is important to note that Proteus mirabilis RTX339 pet gene has chromosomal location. The chromosomal location of the gene was established since no plasmids were harbored by this strain.

Background:Biodiversity supports multiple ecosystem services,whereas species loss endangers the provision of many services and affects ecosystem resilience and resistance *** increase of remote sensing techniques allows to estimate biodiversity and ecosystem services supply at the landscape level in areas with low available data(*** Patagonia).This paper evaluates the potential biodiversity and how it links with ecosystem services,based on vascular plant species across eight ecological *** also evaluated the habitat plant requirements and their relation with natural gradients.A total of 977 plots were used to develop habitat suitability maps based on an environmental niche factor analysis of 15 more important indicator species for each ecological area(n=53 species)using 40 explanatory ***,these maps were combined into a single potential biodiversity map,which was linked with environmental variables and ecosystem services *** comparisons,data were extracted and compared through analyses of ***:The plant habitat requirements varied greatly among the different ecological areas,and it was possible to define groups according to its specialization and marginality *** potential biodiversity map allowed us to detect coldspots in the western mountains and hotspots in southern and eastern *** biodiversity was associated to higher temperatures and normalized difference vegetation index,while lower biodiversity was related to elevation and *** biodiversity was closely associated with supporting and provisioning ecosystem services in shrublands and grasslands in the humid steppe,while the lowest values were related to cultural ecosystem services in nothofagus ***:The present study showed that plant species present remarkable differences in spatial distributions and ecological requirements,being a useful proxy for potential biodiversity *** biodiversity values
