Experiences of the Electricity system Operator Incentive scheme in Great Britain

National Grid is the electricity system operator in Great Britain and has an unique feature in so far as it is one of the world’s few for-profit system operators. In addition, the commercially orientation of the British market rules means that nearly every action taken by National Grid to operate the system has a cost associated to it. Based on those factors and in order to encourage National Grid to seek continuous improvements and drive for efficient and economic system operation, the regulator (Ofgem) offers an incentive scheme, whereby a target is agreed annually and any savings in relation to this target are shared between consumers and National Grid in the form of a profit. It is in National Grid’s best interest to have mechanisms to mitigate the impacts of volatility in the costs it faces as system operator so that it can implement cost saving actions without the risk of windfall losses (or gains) arising from sudden changes in uncontrollable drivers. The purpose of this paper is to share the experiences of National Grid in the operation of Great Britain's electricity system, with a special interest on the mechanisms created to manage the associated costs in response to the incentive scheme. It does so by describing the market operation in Great Britain and the costs drivers impacting National Grid’s system operation and illustrating the steps recently taken by National Grid to propose volatility mitigation mechanisms. It concludes with the rationale and expected results from the latest proposals as consulted with the industry for introduction in the incentive scheme starting on 1st April 2011. It is worth noting that with this work, the authors wish to both share the experience with other system operators and regulators in the world, as well as give British market participants an insight on the inner workings of National Grid.

Optimal Portfolio selection of Wind Power Plants Using a stochastic Risk-Averse Optimization Model, Considering the Wind Complementarity of the sites and a Budget Constraint

This work focuses on the best financial resources allocation to define a wind power plant portfolio, considering a set of feasible sites. To accomplish the problem formulation and solution, the first step was to establish a long-term wind series reconstruction methodology for generating scenarios of wind energy, applying it to study five different locations of the Brazilian territory. secondly, a risk-averse stochastic optimization model was implemented and used to define the optimal wind power plant selection span>that maximizes the portfolio financial results, considering an investment budget constraint. In a sequence, a case study was developed to illustrate a practical situation of applying the methodology to the portfolio selection problem, considering five wind power plants options. The casespan style="font-family:Verdana;"> study was supported by the proposed optimization model, using the scenarios of generation created by the reconstruction methodology. The obtained results show the model performance in terms of defining the best financial resources allocation considering the effect of the complementarity between sites, making it feasible to select the optimal set of wind power plants, characterizing a wind plant optimal portfolio that takes into account the budget constraint. The adopted methodology makes it possible to realize that the diversification of the portfolio depends on the investor risk aversion. Although applied to the Brazilian case, this model can be customized to solve a similar problem worldwide.

Cooperative Localization and Tracking in Distributed Robot-sensor Networks

This paper addresses the problem of real-time position and orientation estimation of networked mobile robots in two-dimensional Euclidean space with simultaneous tracking of a rigid unknown object based on exteroceptive sensory information extracted from distributed vision systems. The sufficient and necessary conditions for team localization are proposed. A localization and object tracking approach based on statistical operators and graph searching algorithms is presented for a team of robots localized with het- erogeneous sensors. The approach was implemented in an experimental platform consisting of car-like mobile robots equipped with omnidirectional video cameras and IEEE 802.11b wireless networking. The experimental results validate the approach.

Background： This study evaluated the impact of hormonal modulation at the onset of proestrus on ovarian response and uterine gene expression of beef ***： A total of 172 anestrous beef cows were assigned to one of four groups according to the treatment with estradiol cypionate（ECP） and/or equine chorionic gonadotropin（eCG） [CON（n = 43）, ECP（n = 43）, eCG（n = 44）and ECP ＋ eCG（n = 42）].Results： ECP-treated cows（ECP and ECP ＋ eCG groups） presented greater occurrence of estrus（44.6% vs. 65.4%; P = 0.01） and pregnancy per AI [47.1% vs. 33.3%; P = 0.07], but similar progesterone（P4） concentration at subsequent diestrus than cows not treated with ECP（CON and eCG groups）. Nonetheless, eCG-treated cows（eCG and ECP ＋ eCG groups） presented larger follicle at timed AI（12.6 ± 0.3 vs. 13.5 ± 0.3 mm; P = 0.03）, greater ovulation rate（96.5%vs. 82.6%; P = 0.008） and greater P4 concentration at d 6（3.9 ± 0.2 vs. 4.8 ± 0.2 ng/mL; P = 0.001） than cows not treated with eCG（CON and ECP groups）. Next, cows with a new corpus luteum 6 d after TAI were submitted to uterine biopsy procedure. Uterine fragments [CON（n = 6）, ECP（n = 6）] were analyzed by RNA-seq and a total of 135 transcripts were differentially expressed between groups（73 genes up-regulated by ECP treatment）. subsequently,uterine samples were analyzed by q PCR（genes associated with cell proliferation）. ECP treatment induced greater abundance of PTCH2（P = 0.07） and COL4 A1（P = 0.02）, whereas suppressed EGFR（P = 0.09） expression. Conversely, eCG treatment increased abundance of HB-EGF（P = 0.06）, EsR2（P = 0.09）, and ITGB3（P = 0.05）, whereas it reduced transcription of EsR1（P = 0.05）. Collectively, supplementation with ECP or eCG at the onset of proestrous of anestrous beef cows influenced ovarian responses, global and specific endometrial gene ***： Proestrus estradiol regulate the endometrial transcriptome, particularly stimulating proliferative activity in the endometrium.

Dipeptidyl peptidase 4(DPP4),also known as adenosine deaminase binding protein or cluster of differentiation 26(CD26),is a serine exopeptidase able to inactivate peptides composed of proline,hydroxyproline,or alanine as the penultimate *** has a strong capacity to act in various peptides and is also widely expressed in many specialized cell types,such as endothelial cells,macrophages,and *** its physiological aspects,DPP4 inactivates the glucagon-like peptide-1(GLP-1),an incretin secreted by the gastrointestinal tract(1).Based on the antidiabetic actions of this incretin,several DPP4 inhibitors(named as gliptins)were launched in the market and are being in use for the treatment of type 2 diabetes(1).It is noteworthy that DPP4 also inactivate some cytokines,chemokines,and neuropeptides involved in inflammation,immunity,and vascular function(2).

Resource management at the network edge for federated learning

A recently proposed taxonomic classification of extant ungulates sparked a series of publications that criticize the Phylogenetic species Concept （PsC） claiming it to be a particularly poor species *** opinions reiteratively stated that （1） the two fundamental elements of the ＂PsC＂,i.e.,monophyly and diagnosability,do not offer objective criteria as to where the line between species should be drawn;and （2） that extirpation of populations can lead to artificial diagnosability and spurious recognitions of *** sudden eruption of criticism against the PsC is *** attributed to the PsC are common to most approaches and concepts that modern systematists employ to establish species *** controversial taxonomic propositions that sparked criticism against the PsC are indeed highly problematic,not because of the species concept upon which they are based,but because no evidence （whatsoever） has become public to support a substantial portion of the proposed *** herein discuss these topics using examples from *** areas of biological research rest upon taxonomic accuracy （including conservation biology and biomedical research）;hence,it is necessary to clarify what are （and what are not）the real sources of taxonomic inaccuracy.

Distribution of the related weevil species sitophilus oryzae and s. zeamais in Brazil

The genus sitophilus （Coleoptera： Curculionidae） encompasses species of great economic importance as stored grain pests worldwide. Among these species, the maize and the rice weevils （sitophilus zeamais and sitophilus oryzae, respectively） are partic- ularly important in warmer climates. These two weevils exhibit closely morphological and ecological resemblance making difficult their proper identification and recognition of their distribution in grain-producing regions. Both species are recorded in south America and particularly in Brazil, but their respective distribution and prevalence were not yet assessed in the region. Therefore, several insect samples throughout Brazil were collected and subjected to morphological identification using male genitalia and also using molec- ular identification with species-specific primers designed for clear recognition of both the species. The primers were designed for the specific amplification of a gene fragment of the cytochrome oxidase subunit I, which exhibited high specificity during our prelimi- nary experiments with insects from six populations of known species （either s. zeamais or s. oryzae）. Both identification strategies provided the same results indicating preva- lence of the maize weevil s. zeamais throughout the country. Two hypotheses may explain such prevalence：（i） the likely host preference ofs. zeamais for maize because this is the most cultivated cereal in Brazil, and （ii） the prevalence ofs. zeamais in tropical regions as compared with s. oryzae, which is more disseminated in subtropical and temperate regions.

The nest architecture of the ant, Pheidole oxyops Forel, 1908 （Hymenoptera： Formicidae）

Pheidole oxyops builds subterranean nests, with an external architecture that is distinctive and easily recognizable by its wide and specific entrance hole, measuring up to 12.2 cm in diameter, denoting a pitfall-trap. In order to study the nests＇ internal architecture, seven nests were excavated; four were identified with neutral talc, while the others were cast in cement and then excavated. Measurements were made in order to gain a better understand- ing of their structures, and a photographic documentation was obtained as well. The excavations revealed that the nests are perpendicular relative to the ground, beginning with a cylindrical channel with a mean length of 13.5 cm, containing irregular formations, and whose diameter becomes progressively narrower until the first chamber is formed. As the channel continues, dish-like chambers appear, interconnected by channels that become progressively narrower and longer, while the chambers are arranged at greater distances from each other as nest depth increases. Both channels and chambers are located on the vertical projection of the entrance hole. Nests may reach a depth of up to 5.09 m, with a number of chambers ranging between 4 and 14.

The aim of this paper is to investigate the influence of physical and chemical factors on transport and use of substrate for Atta sexdens rubropilosa workers. Three types of rectangular fragments were used to study the physical influence factors： filter paper with paraffin, filter paper without paraffin and polyester film. To study the chemical factors, some fragments were impregnated with organic extract of orange albedo, others were soaked with soybean oil and for the remaining ones nothing was applied. The fonowing parameters were evaluated：（i） attractiveness of substrate for transport and number of loading workers per treatment; （ii） foraged material incorporation; （iii） rejection by numbers of fragments deposited in the garbage or beside the fungus garden. All the polyester film fragments carried out to the fungus garden were subsequently rejected. We verified that chemical factors of the substrate were more quickly detected by the workers, whereas physical factors were used as a criterion in the decision-making to reject or accept the substrate collected.
