The ceramics industry,resulting from developments of modern compounds,is a segment of great influence in worldwide *** ceramic factories based on wood combustion have significant risks for the creation and discharge of atmosphere nanoparticles(NPs)and ultra-fine particles(UFPs).At present,there is insufficient recognition on the influence of engineered-NPs on the atmosphere and *** improvements are indispensable to diminish contact with *** present study demonstrates the main NPs and UFPS present in an area of intense artisanal wood-combustion ceramic *** matter was sampled for morphological,chemical,and geochemical studies by sophisticated electron microbeam microscopy,X-Ray Diffraction,and Raman *** NPs configuration(identify *** amorphous NPs(>10 nm)were produced around the studied artisanal ceramic *** study presents an indication of the recent information on population and work-related contact to NPs in the artisanal ceramic factories and their influence on health.

Teaching Architecture through Design References： The Contribution of Brazilian Journals in the Publication of Visitable Architectures

The aim of this work is to illuminate how the architectural publication in Brazil is influenced by the location of its economic poles. Although the main specialized journals are nationwide read and the published projects are frequently used as design references by students at architecture schools all over Brazil, it appears to be a favor for those projects located at the southeast region. in order to investigate this initial assumption, we selected two of the most influential architectural journals, A U and Project Design magazines, focusing on visitable projects that are, therefore, capable of offering an experience for learning about architectural project. The analysis covered three years of publications in which four states in Brazil were distinguished： Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais and Federal District. The collected data show that the published visitable projects coincide with the economic poles around centered cities in Brazil, as well as the location of architecture schools and specialized media, becomes evident; not only because of the greater number of projects in the Sao Paulo area, but mainly because most of the published projects are located in the capitals of the analyzed poles.

Experiences of the Electricity System Operator incentive Scheme in Great Britain

National Grid is the electricity system operator in Great Britain and has an unique feature in so far as it is one of the world’s few for-profit system operators. in addition, the commercially orientation of the British market rules means that nearly every action taken by National Grid to operate the system has a cost associated to it. Based on those factors and in order to encourage National Grid to seek continuous improvements and drive for efficient and economic system operation, the regulator (Ofgem) offers an incentive scheme, whereby a target is agreed annually and any savings in relation to this target are shared between consumers and National Grid in the form of a profit. it is in National Grid’s best interest to have mechanisms to mitigate the impacts of volatility in the costs it faces as system operator so that it can implement cost saving actions without the risk of windfall losses (or gains) arising from sudden changes in uncontrollable drivers. The purpose of this paper is to share the experiences of National Grid in the operation of Great Britain's electricity system, with a special interest on the mechanisms created to manage the associated costs in response to the incentive scheme. it does so by describing the market operation in Great Britain and the costs drivers impacting National Grid’s system operation and illustrating the steps recently taken by National Grid to propose volatility mitigation mechanisms. it concludes with the rationale and expected results from the latest proposals as consulted with the industry for introduction in the incentive scheme starting on 1st April 2011. it is worth noting that with this work, the authors wish to both share the experience with other system operators and regulators in the world, as well as give British market participants an insight on the inner workings of National Grid.

Effect of temperature and atmosphere on the tribological behavior of a polyether ether ketone composite

Polyether ether ketone(PEEK)is a high-performance thermoplastic,which is often selected for high-temperature tribological applications under chemically aggressive *** present work investigates the tribological behavior of a high-performance PEEK composite under conditions that are often found inside hermetic ***,an AMTi tribometer equipped with a hermetic chamber and a heating system was used to conduct sliding tests of PEEK cylinders on AiSi 304 stainless steel polished discs(S_(q)ith reciprocating movement and a normal force of 175 *** tribological behavior of the PEEK/AiSi 304 stainless steel system was investigated as a function of ambient temperature(30℃ and 80℃)and atmosphere(atmospheric air and tetrafluoroethane).Wear and surface roughness analyses were performed with white light interferometry and optical *** spectroscopy was used to investigate transfer films on the counter body *** was observed to have a strong influence on the tribological behavior of the samples tested under atmospheric air,with a 25%decrease in the friction coefficient associated with a 100%increase in the wear ***,the friction measured from the samples tested under a tetrafluoroethane atmosphere showed no significant temperature dependence.

iNTRODUCTiON The benefit of mechanical thrombectomy for stroke associated with anterior circulation large vessel occlusion(LVO)is well established and among the most effective treatments in medicine.1 Stroke associated with basilar artery occlusion(BAO)was not included in the seminal thrombectomy randomised clin-ical trials(RCTs).BAO accounts for 1%of the ischaemic strokes and 5%-10%of the LVO,but 70%-80%of BAO victims evolve to death or full dependence.23 The terminal nature of the brainstem and thalamic circulations may predispose to such dismal *** two RCT designed to assess the efficacy of early(ince symptoms onset)thrombectomy for BAO treatment,the BEST and BASiCS trials.24 Given the prior evidence for thrombectomy benefit for anterior circu-lation stroke is well settled;BAO stroke shares a similar physiopathology with very poor prog-nosis.

AiM： To evaluate the classification and severity of Crohn＇s disease in different racial groups. METHODS： Patients with Crohn＇s disease from the outpatient clinic of the University Hospital Prof. Edgard Santos were enrolled in the study. This hospital is a reference centre for inflammatory bowel disease. Race was determined using self-identification. The Vienna＇s classification was applied for all subjects. The severity of Crohn＇s disease was determined according to the number of surgical procedures, hospital admissions in the last year and treatment with steroids and immunosuppressors. Statistical analysis was calculated using t test for means,χ^2 or F for proportions. A P value 〈 0.05 was considered to be significant. RESULTS： Sixty-five patients were enrolled. Non-white patients were more frequently diagnosed with Crohn＇s disease in the age less than 40 years than white patients. The behaviour of disease was similar in both groups with a high frequency of the penetrating form. There was a tendency for non-white patients to have a greater frequency of hospital admissions in the last year compared to white subjects. Non-whites also had a higher rate of colonic and upper gastrointestinal involvement, and were also more frequently on treatment with immunossupressors than white patients although this difference was not statistically significant. CONCLUSiON： Non-white patients with Crohn＇s disease had an earlier diagnosis and appeared to have had a more severe disease Dresentation than white patients.

Evaluation of impairment Caused by MPEG Video Frame Loss

This article presents a study on the impact of video frame losses on the quality perceived by users. Video compression standards, such as MPEG, use a sequence of frames called Group of Pictures (GOP), which is a video compression method which a frame is expressed in terms of one or more neighboring frames. This dependence between frames impacts directly in the quality because a loss of a reference frame prevents the decoding of other frames in GOP, thereby reducing the user-perceived quality. The assessment of quality in this article is estimated by Peak Signal Noise Ratio (PSNR), which compares the original and the received images. Computer simulations were used to show that the degradation on the quality may vary for different patterns of GOPs and type of lost frames.

Extreme drought events are expected to be one of the main challenges for tropical agriculture and,consequently,for global food *** this reason,it is urgent to develop strategies to increase water use efficiency,as well as to increase crops’ ability to cope with *** rare earth elements(REEs) are known to alleviate damages in plants under abiotic stresses,we hypothesized that addition of Ce^3+to nutrient solution would promote the growth of common bean,especially under simulated drought *** test this hypothesis,we conducted an experiment evaluating the effect of six Ce^3+concentrations on the development and physiological traits of common bean grown in nutrient solution under normal condition and under induced drought stress,caused by the addition of polyethylene glycol6000 to the nutrient *** results show that Ce^3+alleviates water stress in common bean plants,increasing their survival rate and *** addition,Ce^3+application increases photosynthesis rate,chlorophyll content and water use efficiency under water ***,we observe no significant effect of Ce^3+on plants growing under normal ***,Ce3+seems to be a promising attenuator of drought stress for common bean.

Friction Analyses of Dimple-Structured Surface

This paper proposes an investigation of the effects of laser engineering surface with dimple operating under lubrication. Dimples with semi-spherical geometry, with 100 μm in diameter and 25 μm in depth, were Laser-machined on the surfaces of high speed steel AiSi H 13 discs, with three different distribution densities applied over the surface. Pin-on-disc experiments were performed by using counter bodies made with AiSi 440C and Tungsten carbide iSO K20 pins. The experiments provided data information on the influence of dimple distribution on the coefficient of friction. Numerical simulations were performed to understand the influence of the pin and disc surface roughness on the contact problem. The results suggest that the design of dimple-structured surfaces rely on nine main parameters： material contact pair and its respective hardness, Young Modulus, the roughness of the surfaces, the dimple design, the dimple distribution, the load applied, the velocity and the type of lubricant. A better performance can be obtained from a compromise solution over these parameters, and the dimple concentration has a dominance over the other parameters. The best results were obtained with a lower concentration of dimples, under higher speed and load. Numerical simulations can also be used as a design tool, supporting decisions regarding shape and distribution of the dimples and material selections for the contact pair.
