This paper aims to numerically investigate the effects of parametric instability on piezoelectric energy harvesting from the transverse galloping of a square prism. A two degrees-of-freedom reduced-order model for this problem is proposed and numerically integrated. A usual quasi-steady galloping model is applied, where the transverse force coefficient is adopted as a cubic polynomial function with respect to the angle of attack. Time-histories of nondimensional prism displacement, electric voltage and power dissipated at both the dashpot and the electrical resistance are obtained as functions of the reduced velocity. Both, oscillation amplitude and electric voltage, increased with the reduced velocity for all parametric excitation conditions tested. For low values of reduced velocity, 2:1 parametric excitation enhances the electric voltage. On the other hand, for higher reduced velocities, a 1:1 parametric excitation(i.e., the same as the natural frequency) enhances both oscillation amplitude and electric voltage. It has been also found that, depending on the parametric excitation frequency, the harvested electrical power can be amplified in 70% when compared to the case under no parametric excitation.

Greenstone belts contain several clues about the evolutionary history of primitive ***,we describe the volcano-sedimentary rock association exposed along the eastern margin of the Gavião Block,named the Northern Mundo Novo Greenstone Belt(N-MNGB),and present data collected with different techniques,including U–Pb–Hf–O isotopes of zircon and multiple sulfur isotopes(^(32)S,^(33)S,^(34)S,and ^(36)S)of pyrite from this supracrustal sequence.A pillowed metabasalt situated in the upper section of the N-MNGB is 3337±25 Ma old and has zircon with ε_(Hf)(t)=2.47 to1.40,Hf model ages between 3.75 Ga and 3.82 Ga,and δ^(18)O=+3.6‰to+7.3‰.These isotopic data,together with compiled whole-rock trace element data,suggest that the mafic metavolcanic rocks formed in a subduction-related setting,likely a back-arc basin juxtaposed to a continental *** this context,the magma interacted with older Eoarchean crustal components from the Gavião *** zircons from the overlying quartzites of the Jacobina Group are sourced from Paleoarchean rocks,in accordance with previous studies,yielding a maximum depositional age of 3353±22 *** detrital zircons have ε_(Hf)(t)=5.40 to0.84,Hf model ages between 3.66 Ga and 4.30 Ga,and δ^(18)O=+4.8‰to+6.4‰.The pyrite multiple sulfur isotope investigation of the 3.3 Ga supracrustal rocks from the N-MNGB enabled a further understanding of Paleoarchean sulfur *** samples have diverse isotopic compositions that indicate sulfur sourced from distinct ***,they preserve the signal of the anoxic Archean atmosphere,expressed by MIF-S signatures(Δ^(33)S between1.3‰to+1.4‰)and a Δ^(36)S/Δ^(33)S slope of0.81 that is indistinguishable from the so-called Archean array.A BIF sample has a magmatic origin of sulfur,as indicated by the limited Δ^(34)S range(0 to+2‰),Δ^(33)S~0‰,and Δ^(36)S~0‰.A carbonaceous schist shows positive Δ^(34)S(2.1‰–3.5‰)and elevated Δ^(33)S(1.2‰–1.4‰)values,with corresponding negative Δ^(36)S

Fecal marker levels as predictors of need for endoscopic balloon dilation in Crohn's disease patients with anastomotic strictures

AIM To evaluate the accuracy and best cut-off value of fecal calprotectin(FC) and fecal lactoferrin(FL) to predict disease recurrence in asymptomatic patients presenting with anastomotic strictures. METHODS This was a longitudinal single tertiary center study based on prospectively collected data(recorded in a clinical database created for this purpose) performed between March 2010 and November 2014. Crohn's disease(CD) patients with anastomotic stricture who submitted to postoperative endoscopic evaluation were included. Stools were collected on the day before bowel cleaning for FC and FL. Endoscopic balloon dilation(EBD) was performed if the patient presented an anastomotic stricture not traversed by the colonoscope, regardless of patients' symptoms. Successful dilation was defined as passage of the colonoscope through the dilated stricture into the neotermimal *** recurrence was defined as a modified Rutgeerts score of ≥ i2 b. RESULTS In a total of 178 patients who underwent colonoscopy, 58 presented an anastomotic stricture, 86% were asymptomatic, and 48(54% male; median age of 46.5 years) were successfully dilated. Immediate success rate was 92% and no complications were recorded. FC and FL levels correlated significantly with endoscopic recurrence(P < 0.001) with an optimal cut-off value of 90.85 μg/g(sensitivity of 95.5%, specificity of 69.2%, positive predictive value(PPV) of 72.4%, negative predictive value(NPV) of 94.7% and accuracy of 81%] for FC and of 5.6 μg/g(sensitivity of 77.3%, specificity of 69.2%, PPV of 68%, NPV of 78.4% and accuracy of 72.9%) for *** Fecal markers are good predictors of CD endoscopic recurrence in patients with asymptomatic anastomotic stricture. FC and FL may guide the need for EBD in this context.

Human metallothionein(MT)is a small-size yet efficient metal-binding protein,playing an essential role in metal homeostasis and heavy metal *** contains two domains,each forming a polynuclear metal cluster with an exquisite hexatomic ring *** apoprotein is intrinsically disordered,which may strongly influence the clusters and the metal-thiolate(M-S)bonds,leading to a highly dynamic ***,these features are challenging to identify due to the transient nature of these *** individual signal from dynamic conformations with different states of the cluster and M-S bond will be averaged and blurred in classic ensemble *** circumvent these problems,we combined a single-molecule approach and multiscale molecular simulations to investigate the rupture mechanism and chemical stability of the metal cluster by a single MT molecule,focusing on the Zn4S11 cluster in theαdomain upon *** multiple unfolding pathways and intermediates are observed for both domains,corresponding to different combinations of M-S bond *** of the pathways is clearly preferred suggesting that unfolding proceeds from the distribution of protein conformational substates with similar M-S bond *** indicate that the metal cluster may rearrange,forming and breaking metal-thiolate bonds even when MT is folded independently of large protein backbone ***,a highly dynamic polynuclear metal cluster with multiple conformational states is revealed in MT,responsible for the binding promiscuity and diverse cellular functions of this metal-carrier protein.

AIM:To evaluate the clinical outcomes after Ferrara intrastromal corneal ring segments(ICRS)reoperation in patients with ***:A total of 37 keratoconus eyes implanted with intrastromal corneal ring segments,which had an ICRS exchange,addition,reposition or removal were *** visual acuity(UCVA),best corrected visual acuity(BCVA),keratometry(K),asphericity(Q)and pachymetry at the thinnest point(PTP)of the cornea were evaluated using a corneal tomography(Oculus Pentacam,USA)RESULTS:The mean follow-up time after the reoperation was 30.5±9.7 *** mean UCVA improved from 20/300 to 20/80(P=0.005);the mean BCVA improved from 20/160 to 20/50(P=0.0002),the mean keratometry reduced from 49.33±4.19D to 46.16±3.90D(P=0.0001),the mean pachymetry at the thinnest point increased from 450±42.9μm to 469±40.8μm(P=0.0001).The asphericity increased from-0.84±0.74 to-0.35±0.81(P=0.15)and the spherical equivalent reduced from-4.64±4.87D to-3.04±3.45D(P=0.137).The changes in the asphericity and spherical equivalent were not statistically ***:Ferrara ICRS implantation showed to be a reversible and readjustable surgical procedure for keratoconus *** outcomes can be obtained even after removal,addition,reposition or exchange of ICRS.

A new way to characterize asperities on metallic surfaces at the nanometer scale is proposed. Asperities are often treated using conventional statistical descriptors such as average and root mean square roughness, which do not provide adequate mechanistic insight into surface defect formation and mitigation. The new rationale revolves around developing a mathematical description of the evolution of the area occupied by asperities at each height slice on a topography image, with direct implications on how asperity instances are tracked and their risk of breakage leading to potential exposure and degradation of the metal surface upon thermo-mechanical stresses during the operation of read/write heads is assessed. The technique was shown to be disruptive by surpassing all other surface quality metrics, such as conventional roughness and static area % asperity at 0.5 nm height, in its ability to statistically differentiate surfaces coming from various manufacturing process iterations tailored to produce different surface conditions in the hard disk drive industry. A theoretical formulation proposing that the static asperity technique is fundamentally insufficient, is presented and validated experimentally.

The announcement of major sporting events scheduled to take place in Rio de Janeiro in the coming years is now producing several radical urban transformations that are attracting the attention of renowned architects of the international circuit. All this is happening in a city where relevant architectural references have not been produced for a long while because of the prolonged economic crisis of the past. Despite these conditions, people were able to detect “invisible” design lessons to be learned in this city by sharing perceptual experiences with foreign observers who are, by definition, unaware of their preconceptions. This paper deals with the development of a strategy for re-presenting design references that are locally rooted and accessible for direct embodied experience. The strategy put forward a MPI （metropolitan performance index） drawn out from a bibliographical survey coupled with analytical spatial diagrams of different case-studies presented as a tour guide for the recognition of the architecture produced in Rio de Janeiro. It is believed that this strategy can favor the adoption of an eye attuned to contemporary theories especially interested in the spatial and programmatic concerns that today instigate the designer.

BACKGROUND The advent of flow diverters(FDs)has changed the scope of endovascular treatment options for intracranial aneurysms(IAs).FDs can effectively treat complex aneurysms in which both microsurgical and conventional endovascular options are less than ideal.12 The Pipeline Flex Embolization Device(PED;Medtronic,Irvine,California,USA)has been available in the USA for several years demon-strating positive *** recently,the PED Flex with enhanced delivery features has been introduced,and although decreased,thromboembolic complications are still a potential risk.3 In light of this,a new surface modification was applied to the PED Flex known as Shield Technology consisting of a phosphorylcholine layer covalently bound to its metal braids potentially reducing its thrombogenicity.4 Herein,we report our initial experience using the PED Flex with Shield Technology in the treatment of an unruptured fusiform aneurysm located in the middle cerebral artery(MCA)using dual-an-tiplatelet therapy.
