Sewage sludge is a potential precursor for biochar production,but its effective utilization involves costly activation *** modify biochar properties while ensuring cost-effectiveness,we examined the feasibility of using seawater as an agent to activate biochar produced from sewage *** our proof-of-concept study,seawater was proven to be an effective activation agent for biochar production,achieving a surface area of 480.3 m^(2)/g with hierarchical porosity *** from our design,the catalytic effect of seawater increased not only the surface area but also the graphitization degree of biochar when comparing the pyrolysis of sewage sludge without *** leads to seawater activated biochar electrodes with lower resistance,higher capacitance of 113.9 F/g comparing with control groups without *** the global increase in the salinity of groundwater,especially in coastal areas,these findings provide an opportunity for recovering a valuable carbon resource from sludge.

A modified PANS model for computations of unsteady turbulence cavitating flows

A modification to the PANS(partially averaged Navier-Stokes) model is proposed to simulate unsteady cavitating flows. In the model, the parameter fk is modified to vary as a function of the ratios between the water density and the mixture density in the local flows. The objective of this study is to validate the modified model and further understand the interaction between turbulence and cavitation around a Clark-Y hydrofoil. The comparisons between the numerical and experiment results show that the modified model can be improved to predict the cavity evolution, vortex shedding frequency and the lift force fluctuating in time fairly well, as it can effectively modulate the eddy viscosity in the cavitating region and various levels of physical turbulent fluctuations are resolved. In addition, from the computational results, it is proved that cavitation phenomenon physically influences the turbulent level, especially by the vortex shedding behaviors. Also, the mean u-velocity profiles demonstrate that the attached cavity thickness can alter the local turbulent shear layer.

Application of permanganate in the oxidation of micropollutants:a mini review

As a green oxidant,permanganate has received considerable attention for the removal of micropollutants in drinking water *** provide a better understanding of the oxidation of organic micropollutants with permanganate,the oxidation kinetics of 32 micropollutants were *** pollutants include algal toxins,endocrine disrupting chemicals(EDCs),and *** oxidation kinetics of micropollutants by permanganate were found to be first order with respect to both contaminant and permanganate concentrations from which second-order rate constants(k″)were *** oxidized the heterocyclic aromatics with vinyl moiety(i.e.,microcystins,carbamazepine,and dichlorvos)by the addition of double *** the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs)with alkyl groups,permanganate attacked the benzylic C-H through abstraction of *** mechanism for the oxidation of phenolic EDCs by permanganate was a single electron transfer and aromatic ring *** presence of background matrices could enhance the oxidation of some phenolic EDCs by permanganate,including phenol,chlorinated phenols,bisphenol A,and *** toxicity of dichlorvos solution increased after permanganate oxidation,and the estrogenic activity of bisphnol A/estrone increased significantly at the beginning of permanganate ***,the toxicity of degradation products or intermediates should be determined in the permanganate oxidation processes to better evaluate the applicability of *** influence of background ions on the permanganate oxidation process is far from clear and should be elucidated in the future studies to better predict the performance of permanganate oxidation of ***,methods should be employed to catalyze the permanganate oxidation process to achieve better removal of micropollutants.

Factors hindering the degradation of pharmaceuticals from human urine in an iron-activated persulfate system

This study investigated the degradation of clofibric acid(CFA),bezafibrate(BZF),and sulfamethoxazole(SMX)in synthetic human urine using a novel mesoporous iron powderactivated persulfate system(mFe-PS system),and identified the factors limiting their degradation in synthetic human urine.A kinetic model was established to expose the radical production in various reaction conditions,and experiments were conducted to verify the modeling *** the phosphate-containing mFe-PS system,the 120 min removal efficiency of CFA decreased from 95.1%to 76.6%as the phosphate concentration increased from 0.32 to 6.45 mmol/L,but recovered to 90.5%when phosphate concentration increased to 16.10 mmol/***,the increased concentration of phosphate from 0.32 to 16.10mmol/L reduced the BZF degradation efficacy from 91.5%to 79.0%,whereas SMX removal improved from 37.3%to 62.9%.The m Fe-PS system containing(bi)carbonate,from 4.20 to166.70 mmol/L,reduced CFA and BZF removal efficiencies from 100%to 76.8%and 80.4%,respectively,and SMX from 83.5%to 56.7%within a 120-min reaction *** addition,alkaline conditions(pH≥8.0)inhibited CFA and BZF degradations,while nonacidic pH(pH≥7.0)remarkably inhibited SMX *** of the kinetic model indicated the formation of phosphate(H_(2)PO_(4)^(·)/HPO_(4)^(·-))and/or carbonate radicals(CO_(3)^(·-))could limit pharmaceutical *** transformation products(TPs)of the pharmaceuticals revealed more incompletely oxidized TPs occurred in the phosphate-and(bi)carbonate-containing m Fe-PS systems,and indicated that H_(2)PO_(4)^(·)/HPO_(4)^(·-)mainly degraded pharmaceuticals via a benzene ring-opening reaction while CO_(3)^(·-)preferentially oxidized pharmaceuticals via a hydroxylation reaction.

Negative emotion classification refers to the automatic classification of negative emotion of texts in social *** existing methods are based on deep learning models,facing challenges such as complex structures and too many *** meet these challenges,in this paper,we propose a method for negative emotion classification utilizing a Robustly Optimized BERT Pretraining Approach(RoBERTa)and p-norm Broad Learning(p-BL).Specifically,there are mainly three contributions in this ***,we fine-tune the RoBERTa to adapt it to the task of negative emotion ***,we employ the fine-tuned RoBERTa to extract features of original texts and generate sentence ***,we adopt p-BL to construct a classifier and then predict negative emotions of texts using the *** with deep learning models,p-BL has advantages such as a simple structure that is only 3-layer and fewer parameters to be ***,it can suppress the adverse effects of more outliers and noise in data by flexibly changing the value of ***,we conduct extensive experiments on the public datasets,and the experimental results show that our proposed method outperforms the baseline methods on the tested datasets.

Sustainable Application of a Novel Water Cycle Using Seawater for Toilet Flushing

Global water security is a severe issue that threatens human health and well-being. Finding sustainable alternative water resources has become a matter of great urgency. For coastal urban areas, desalinated seawater could serve as a freshwater supply. However, since 20%-30% of the water supply is used for flushing waste from the city, seawater with simple treatment could also partly replace the use of freshwater. In this work, the freshwater saving potential and environmental impacts of the urban water system （water-wastewater closed loop） adopting seawater desalination, seawater for toilet flushing （SWTF）, or reclaimed water for toilet flushing （RWTF） are compared with those of a conventional freshwater system, through a life-cycle assessment and sensitivity analysis. The potential applications of these processes are also assessed. The results support the environmental sustainability of the SWTF approach, but its potential application depends on the coastal distance and effective population density of a city. Developed coastal cities with an effective population density exceeding 3000 ***-2 and located less than 30 km from the seashore （for the main pipe supplying seawater to the city） would benefit from applying SWTF, regardless of other impact parameters. By further applying the sulfate reduction, autotrophic denitrification, and nitrification integrated （SANI） process for wastewater treatment, the maximum distance from the seashore can be extended to 60 km. Considering that most modern urbanized cities fulfill these criteria, the next generation of water supply systems could consist of a freshwater supply coupled with a seawater supply for sustainable urban development.

Hemophilic articular cartilage damage presents a significant challenge for surgeons,characterized by recurrent intraarticular bleeding,a severe inflammatory microenvironment,and limited self-repair capability of cartilage ***,there is a lack of tissue engineering-based integrated therapies that address both early hemostasis,anti-inflammation,and long-lasting chondrogenesis for hemophilic articular cartilage ***,we developed an adhesive hydrogel using oxidized chondroitin sulfate and gelatin,loaded with exosomes derived from bone marrow stem cells(BMSCs)(Hydrogel-Exos).This hydrogel demonstrated favorable injectability,self-healing,biocompatibility,biodegradability,swelling,frictional and mechanical properties,providing a comprehensive approach to treating hemophilic articular cartilage *** adhesive hydrogel,featuring dynamic Schiff base bonds and hydrogen bonds,exhibited excellent wet tissue adhesiveness and hemostatic *** a pig model,the hydrogel could be smoothly injected into the knee joint cartilage defect site and gelled in situ under fluid-irrigated arthroscopic *** in vitro and in vivo experiments confirmed that the sustained release of exosomes yielded anti-inflammatory effects by modulating macrophage M2 polarization through the NF-κB *** immunoregulatory effect,coupled with the extracellular matrix components provided by the adhesive hydrogel,enhanced chondrogenesis,promoted the cartilage repair and joint function restoration after hemophilic articular cartilage *** conclusion,our results highlight the significant application potential of Hydrogel-Exos for early hemostasis,immunoregulation,and long-term chondrogenesis in hemophilic patients with cartilage *** innovative approach is well-suited for application during arthroscopic procedures,offering a promising solution for addressing the complex challenges associated with hemophilic articular cartilage damage.

FORMATION OF GOLD-BEARING HYDROFRACTURING BRECCIA BODIES IN TECTONIC LENSES: A CASE STUDY ON SHUANGWANG GOLD DEPOSIT, SHAANXI, CHINA

Macro-microscopic tectonic analysis and lithologic features show that the gold-bearing breccia bodies in the Shuangwang gold deposit, for hydrofracturing of the deep-sourced and alkali-rich fluids in the Devonian sodic rock series, are identified as hydrofracturing breccia bodies. Since the Indosinian, intracontinental collisional orogenesis results in multiple fracturings and magmatic emplacements in the Qinling area. Deep-sourced fluids resulting from deep fractures and granitoid magmatic intrusion are of a supercritical nature. Joint action between the fluid-rock system and structures leads to hydrofracturing and ore formation of the gold deposit. Firstly, the progressive coaxial compression caused the competent sodic rock series and the incompetent pelitic rock series to be deformed and partitioned. Lens-like weak-strain domains are hence formed and distributed at the approximate equidistance zones and the linear strong-strain zones, respectively. Subsequently, the progressive non-coaxial shearing and right-lateral and high-angle oblique thrusting lead to the most developed fracture system in the core of the weak-strain domain to turn from compression to extension and to link up with the deep fracture systems. The periodical huge pressure decline in the pumping center causes the deep-sourced confined fluids to develop periodic tectonic pumping, hydrofracturing and precipitation-healing in the sodic rock series. The gold-bearinghydrofracturing breccia bodies are hence ultimately formed at near-equidistance tectonic lenses. On the basis of the above model, the predicted concealed gold-bearing hydrofracturing breccia bodies have been preliminarily validated by latest drillings.

Geologic marks related to extraterrestrial impact events, such as impact split gravels, impact brecciate layers, impact dikes, microirghizites, microtektites, especially meteoritic residues, were discovered on the boundary between Sinian/Cambrian at Tianmenshan of Western Hunan, which may possibly demonstrate that an extraterrestrial impact event has ever occurred there on the S/C boundary.

This work presents an experimental study of the flow-induced vibration of a cantilevered circular cylinder in the wake of another fixed cylinder for the diameter ratio d/D = 0.24 – 1.0 and spacing ratio L/d = 1.0 – 5.5 under the reduced velocity U = 3.8 – 68.3, where d and D are diameters of the upstream and downstream cylinders, respectively, and L is the spacing from the upstream cylinder center to the front stagnation point of the downstream cylinder. Measurements are done for the vibration response, vortex shedding frequency, surface pressure distribution, and flow structures via laser vibrometer, hotwire anemometer, pressure scanner, and particle-image-velocimetry(PIV) system, respectively. A smaller d/D and/or L/d is more prone to causing galloping generation and hysteresis in the galloping response. The galloping vibration involves alternate reattachment and switch of the gap shear layers. The switch of the gap shear layers leads to reduced added mass and added damping, hence exciting and sustaining the vibrations. The initiation of galloping generation wades through pre-initial, initial, and late transitions before reaching steady vibration, where the work done by fluid flow is larger than the dissipation. In addition, this study presents(ⅰ) the roles of effective added mass and effective added damping in vibration initiation and sustainability,(ⅱ) wake structure evolutions in the streamwise and spanwise directions, and(ⅲ) detailed fluid-structure interactions involved.
